Ahhh!…so he must have been “the guy”, lol!
I just remember the ‘design discussion/initial group buy’ thread that went on for two or three months. Everyone was so excited to get the concentric circles and fancy edge spots that we really wanted for the Pharaoh’s but weren’t allowed, so all that was left was an awesome inlay! There was a handful of good ideas but, again, after a few months of excited deliberation, this one guy, who seemed to be spearheading the thread, says something to the effect of: “well, there’s a top hat and cane in the mold, so we’ll go ahead and call it “Top Hat & Cane”…I just felt it was a squandered opportunity for at least a mediocre theme and a waste of time and adrenaline to have a discussion thread about it, but that’s just my (and a few others at the time) opinion. Paulson has the final say in everything but, beyond that, you’re correct in that the guy paying the upfront money and placing the order has the next final say.
I do think that Johnny 5 (I believe I’m giving correct credit) did an amazing job with the inlay design and these chips overall are gorgeous!

Anyway, I don’t wanna hijack OP’s ad with chip history, lol!

GLWS! :)
Actually, Johnny5 didn’t design the art, he says do a few posts above MrChip in that thread I linked. Mrchip designed them.

Oh yeah, I see that now - I stand corrected. He did a great job with the inlay art!
Thanks for posting the link. There’s some interesting info in that thread!

I love everything about these chips - except the inlay, which feels a lot like the placeholder cardboard you get inside a picture frame. I'm surprised there aren't a lot more relabels, since it seems to be literally begging for one.

That’s actually what I like about them. For a generic home game set I’d personally rather have a sort of non-descript inlay design than a fantasy set with a very specific theme that really has no relevance to my game.

…and that’s what he was going for with this inlay design, as well as the hot-stamped “Private Cardroom” chips, and also why there’s no currency symbol: a chip theme generic enough that it could appeal to anyone.
I personally agree with acezag in that the theme seems way too generic and doesn’t measure up to the potential that these chips could have been, especially after soliciting input from other members over a few months and seeing the great theme ideas people were coming up with. It was a deal killer for me.
Aside from our various opinions of the theme though, these are beautiful chips that have a great feel to them!
