I'm shopping for chairs... The search has intensified since one of my Richardson Brothers banquet chairs was broken at my Saturday game... Wish I could say it was something dramatic like an end of night brawl, but it was more like an end of night fall... (yes, alcohol was a factor, lol).

So, I've got two groups of chairs I'm considering (checking them out today). For starters, both are only $10 each, and there are around 20 available in each CL listing.

The first chairs are nice black ones that look very comfortable, and well worth $10 each (likely closer to $50 each). My concerns with this group is size... They look large, and I doubt I'd get 9 of these around my table, much less 10. I also think the armrests in these chairs might exacerbate the space issues, unless the arms are removable?

The second group is smaller red chairs, which are described as near new (business/office changed out decor fairly soon after these were purchased). I think these would fit (and the red color goes just as well in my space as black). They look smaller and less comfortable, but the size seems like it'd work better. I still believe these will be far more comfortable than my existing black vinyl banquet chairs.

yeah the armrests are a deal breaker imo. go with the red ones.

Very possible the armrests are removable...? Won't know without closer inspection. The red chairs are a short drive, the black chairs are an out of town 30 minute drive. I think I'll check out the red chairs first, and if they're better than expected, I might snag then without driving out of town, but if they're meh, I might hold off and check out the black chairs? Undecided. Either way, $10 is a steal IMO

Arm rest should be easily removable, two bolts on the underneath.

I'd still go for the reds either way, those black one IMO aren't that comfortable over long periods.

probably a coinflip. my experience with chairs of this type is that they are either as you say or the armrest actually serves to attach the back of the chair to the seat, in which case you'd be left with little rolling pleather stools which, incidentally, would promote posture among your players, so perhaps that's the way to go ;)

The red chairs (I know them as steno chairs) might be a bargain but only if the back is fully adjustable. There should be a slider that will allow you to move the back away from the seat so that a person with longer legs (probably most men) won't feel like he's perched on the edge of the seat. The seat pan on this chair doesn't look particularly deep, and a player won't be comfortable for long stretches without some support under the thighs. Sit in one. If it's not comfortable for you, it doesn't matter how cheap they are.

Good advice. Compared to my vinyl banquet chairs, I think the red ones have to be more comfy. However, I understand what you mean about adjustability.

Of the two I'd probably go for the red ones pending how comfy they feel. I have one of those office arm rest chairs and there is no way we could get 8 of those around my table. It would be a nightmare!

Yeah I'd go with the smaller red chairs as well...just make sure it can be oriented for using on the floor and not just for walls. :p

can't not hear this song when i see this thread title:

Red! It will be a nice counterpoint to the red bicycle you have on the custom cloth for fat tire.

I have sat in that black one before, it was okay but annoying how relaxed the back is for long periods of time, but if you have a chance to sit in both, would be best to judge for yourself.

I went with the red ones. Pics to follow. They were a little dusty but in great shape.

After making the deal and loading them into my car the seller noticed the sticker on the bottom of one of the chairs and gasped. She indicated that these are "Hon" chairs and retailed for $250 new.

She indicated she'd have never let them go so cheap had she known They were "Hons". She laughed and said "ya got a great deal, enjoy them".

I hope the colors gel with everything else. And btw they are fully adjustable.

Anyone know about Hon chairs?

I would've went with the red as well, armrests big problem for a poker game. I wasn't familiar with Hon, but it seems they are of a similar quality to Steelcase which is a good, solid brand. Sounds like you got an amazing deal, congrats!

Decent padding! Very comfy!

Yup. tad wider than my black banquette chairs. Haven't tried to fit the chairs around the table yet (suspect I'll get 9 comfortably). The chairs are still in the garage awaiting a thorough cleaning.

Matches the furniture relatively well :)

The spring-loaded seat elevation lever is recessed (very classy that it's hidden). Little light surface rust on the piston (only chair with that), which should clean up nicely.

Wow nice!! Love the look of those chairs. Yeah anything HON is pretty solid and reputable.

Chairs thoroughly cleaned and staged. Yup, only nine fit around my table. My new Fat Tire table (in the works) won't have much more space (but it will be wider by two inches). These are very comfy and the more I sit in them, the more I think I will have to host... Yikes! I've sat in my black chairs for many many hours, and never really had any major issues (other than what just sitting anywhere for that many hours will do). These chairs (out the gate) make my other chairs feel like sitting on plain MDF. Happy, even though I can't get 10 chairs around it (at least, no pushed in all the way... maybe possible to get 10 chairs around when the chairs are pushed back somewhat (with people in them)?

Man that looks sweet in your game room. People should be sitting back some so that should free up a little room.

I think that will mess up fitting everyone at the table is the base on these chairs. That base doesn't lend itself well to a home poker setup, as they are wider and make it difficult for you to squeeze in more players without everyones chairs locking wheels

I would almost get a hard surface around the table (not sure what you'd use) so that people can actually roll the chairs in and out easy. At the casino I go to the rolling chairs have big bases which sometimes get stuck on a neighboring player but the floor carpet is super short so its easy to roll around with. Your long carpet might make maneuvering difficult.

I'm going to sit at each spot, then leave the chair in place where it would likely be while in use. Then I'll snag a pic to see the difference. :)

I haven't had much trouble rolling these in and out over my carpet, but I do understand how it could be an issue.

OK, didn't take pictures, but after sitting in each of the chairs (bringing it out where I'm normally comfortable playing), there was more than enough room for 10 chairs. When using 9 chairs, there was no chance of the wheels/legs getting caught on each other. Much happier knowing that I can squeeze a 10th person in there if need be (for say, larger events like the MTTD).

Those chairs look sweet. Wish I could ever score a deal like that - found one a couple months ago and picked up some OK chairs for $5 each, but nothing approaching that quality. Congrats!
