Hi! I’m looking for a relatively affordable cash set as my second set of chips. I currently have a pretty expansive set of Jack Cincies which I love but would love to change it up once in a while. I’m looking at the Gemco Tropicanas and Paulson Majestic Stars right now. Please let me know which you would get or you can be brutally honest and say neither are a good choice. Also, open to other suggestions! I’ve taken a look at the classified section and don’t really see that many cash sets available in the $600 or less range.

Do you think any of the site vendors will have any Black Friday sales that I should wait for?

Thanks!

I’ll agree that those are reasonably good prices for chips from premium manufacturers. If you like them, that’s the most important thing. Personally, I don’t like either sets - but that’s just my personal preference, and I would be neither the new owner nor a player in your game!

Haha, I love your honesty. Do you have any other suggestions other than those?

nor a player in your game
Lol, that seems a bit much. I'm sure we've all played in games with worse chips. But I agree that I'm not really a fan of either set myself.

Since you already have a set of casino used paulsons, I'd consider ceramics. You can get a big set for probably under your budget, and you'll have a different type of chip set when you are bored with the paulsons.

I hope that was a bit tongue in cheek. There are way more important factors (to me at least) than the type/quality of the chips, like how friendly the host/players are, what kind of action, etc. I’d play in a game with dice chips if it’s a fun game!

Love my set of Tropicana chips as do most of the players in my game. A nice change every now and then from Paulson. For the price, I think they are a home run. Shuffle well, have a nice muted sound and stack like bricks. I would suggest them over a destroyed set of Majestic Star chips personally, but old beat up Paulson also have some unique charm.

I figured they just meant they don't live near them so it's not like they'd be playing and experiencing the chips.

Yeah, I didn’t mean that I would refuse to play with someone based on chips, considering I used the same set of chips from like high school until about the age of 30 - clearly not gonna stop me from having a good time.

But I did just mean that I’m some stranger on the internet, and me not liking a set shouldn’t stop someone from enjoying something they do like themselves!

Personally, there are some things I like that would completely turn away other folks on this forum, like RHCs, House molds, and mixed sets (and I’m discounting options like a custom purchase from Tina or semi custom from BR Pro, since your focus seems to be on casino sets).

Various Jack, Horseshoe, and Indiana Grand sets and racks pop up with some regularity in the classifieds, some at very competitive prices - in fact, that can be said of most (though certainly not all) past TCR sales. You might even find ones where folks have already gone through the trouble of labeling a frac for them, if you need that.

No, not as low a price as Majestic Star, but the market has decided those are pretty cheap for a reason.

You are also able to find some pretty readily available live racks on this site, especially of Vegas $1s, for not much over face value, which is still a good price compared to a lot of the Paulsons out there, and those can make great mix and match options as well if you’re okay with that.

You are spot on about me preferring casino sets. I figure if a casino ever used them they should be fine for my 25c/50c home game. I also prefer not to mix and match besides like you said procuring a live rack to turn into fracs. I did that with sycuans for my Jack cincy set.

I figure our group wouldn’t mind a different look and feel every once in while. I keep going back and forth between Tropicana Evansville and Majestic Stars. I wish there was another set in this price range ($600 or less) that I could consider, just don’t know what to look for.

Next TCR sale should be around this price range I would expect as well. Definitely worn chips though. Although probably better than Majestic Stars. Might be worth looking at when the pricing is listed

IMO Tropicana is going to be more fun to play with than very well used Paulsons. The Trops feel rubbery to me- get samples before buying a whole set. I like the texture, but you may not.

Significant delamination on the primary chips. If you're not planning to relabel, I would pay the extra for secondary chips.

Majestic stars will be beat down. There is a charm to old leaded paulsons but a sample set and you will see. I like complete casino sets as well and I would wait for the next TRC sale if it were me.

How big of a set are you looking for?

I’m looking for minimum 500 chips but anywhere from 500-700 should be sufficient.

I wanted to like the Tropicana’s. I purchased a few hundred with the hopes of building a cash set but I just didn’t like the weight, feel or sound. They did stack like bricks and looked nice stacked up but just not for me.

Just got a set for a decent price so I’ll check them out. Price was too good to pass up.

Curious how do you tell whether a Paulson chip is leased or not? Just by the age or is there any other way? Some of the Majestic Star chips have different metallic colour flakes, and I’m wondering whether they are lead or not

Btw, shot a short video showcasing the chips as I couldn’t find any online when deciding what to buy. Maybe it helps

No they are not lead. They are most likely brass or some other relatively “soft” metal. Lead in metal form wasn’t used in chips. Mixing alone would be a headache for materials of drastically different densities. Plus at the temperatures some chips are formed it would melt out into the molds. It would be a nightmare to try and process plastic materials with lead chunks in them. You couldn’t keep uniform size because the lead is so soft it would shear and gum all kinds of crap up.

Leaded gasoline did not have chunks of lead floating around in it. Nor was metal lead “dissolved” in it.

Yeah that's good to know. I have a few CPC samples before and they have brass(?) flakes imbedded in them, so I thought that might be the case. However, as some of these Majestic Star chips are from pre-98, according to this post (https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...n-chips-still-had-lead-in-them-after-98.8291/), they are still leaded right
