Hello everyone. I am a new member, and I am looking to upgrade my home game by buying a new set of 500 chips for my 0.25/0.5 NL home game. As of now, I am torn between the Apache Pharaohs, Apache Taj Mahal, Majestics, or BBO Poker "Classic Casino" poker sets. I am leaning toward the pharoahs but am open to persuasion. My budget is below $400. Does anyone have these sets? Do the pictures give the chips justice? How are the materials/durability? I am currently out of the country and can not purchase samples at the ATM, but I will return during wintertime, and I would love for a new set to be waiting for me when I arrive. So, as of now, samples are kind of out of the question. Don't worry about giving me "wrong" advice, at the end of the day, I am making a decision, so tell me what you think!

I am looking for any type of advice. Subjective feedback is much appreciated.

Comes down to personal preference so much. Maybe first decide what is the most important aspect to you. If inlay size, then that easily cuts you're decision somewhat. If feel, gotta get samples. For me durability is last; I'd rather play with chips I love even if they wear quicker.

Of those pictured, I prefer the Pharaoh's from Apache. I like the way they shuffle. The color spots are nice, and there is a good selection of denominations to fit most needs.

The ability to purchase in rolls of 25 will allow you to configure your set to your specific needs. Are you playing cash or tournament? How many players do you have?

There are plenty of resources here to help you with configuration, if you need it. Getting it right the first time will help you stay within your budget.

All the best.

Thank you, we have 10 players, with $50-100 initial buy in. Chance of rebuys. Cash game.

With that budget and the fact that you’re not in a hurry, I would suggest the Greek hybrids, by a long margin. You could pick a design or have them custom.
where can I find these?

These are an example of the chips @Colquhoun referenced. I like these more than any of those listed.

Is there a website I can find these type of chips?

Please do not choose your set based on someone else’s opinion as everyone has different favorites based on their individual preferences. Personally I wouldn’t buy China Clay until I knew I could put up with the smell, or ceramics until you can tell whether you like the feel and sound, all things are subjective. Do not get in a hurry or you could end up spending your budget on something you can’t stand.

I don’t think you can go wrong with the pharaohs or a set of CM for a first purchase. I haven’t handled TINA chips or pharoahs but I have played with Apache Royals and Br Pros ceramics so if the choice is between ceramics or CC that is something that comes down to personal preference. Need to get samples of each as they both have advantages and disadvantages.

I second what others have said about the new Greek mold. Nothing but positive feedback from what I’ve heard

set of 500 chips for my 0.25/0.5 NL home game.

My budget is below $400.
It is not impossible to buy Paulsons with a slightly higher budget, say $500. They would be used RHC but it’s doable with some patience and sleuthing. That’s the hobby part of this.

If you aren’t into the hobby and just want some cheap chips and then you are outa here then just pick any of the above. They all have pluses and minuses but if the $$ is all you care about it really doesn’t matter among them, they all work the same to a non-hobbiest.

I recently bought both pharaoh and Taj Mahal from Apache. We use the Pharoahs for .25/.50 and Taj for everything else (bc I don’t have fracs). People generally prefer the Taj Mahal as do I. The feel and sound to me, is better and the inlays are more interesting.

With a $400 budget I'd be getting my own custom china ceramics/hybrids. Get samples.

Are you 12? Come on. Go find the chips you like and can afford on your own. What I or anyone here likes is irrelevant.
Chill, I'm trying to broaden my scope of what chips exist, what people in the community like, and for what reason. You weren't my intended audience if the post didn't catch your favor. I appreciate the insight though.

I have a set of Apache Pharaohs and played with them for a few years before arriving here looking for upgrades. No complains for the price I paid for them, def a huge step up from plastic/dice chips. I don't find the smell to be an issue. One thing to point out is that at least when I got them, the edge looked to be shaved to be beveled, that's a plus or minus is up to you. They definitely don't compared to the few Paulson/CPC samples I got my hands on thou, but you get what you paid for

It is possible right now, Apache have a set of Majestic Star for just $350, with shipping you probably just came in under $400. But they are in rougher shapes as far as I know. Still, I have one on order and will see how much effort it is to clean it up. Since you are out of country, my suggestion would be wait till Black Friday at least (The Chip Room and other vendors would have sales) and watch the classified section like a hawk in the mean time. Good deal don't last long

One more option for your price range would be chiplab, they have more or less the same China Clay (only have a few samples so cant speak to its consistency etc.) at a slightly higher prices, but the plus side is that you get to customize your set (the design/inlay that is) at only a few cents more

what if you had any choice with any chip? What chip set do you recommend?
I’ll of course echo the call for samples so you can know your own preference. Personally, for example, I really both dislike the design of the Pharoahs, and don’t like China Clays in general, and yet as you can see in this thread, that would be the first place choice for others. At the end of the day, we are all internet strangers, and your preference matters the most.

But as far as broadening your horizons - with a budget of $400, you really can make that go a long way with a ceramic set from Tina, purchased via a group buy with Justin. I wouldn’t necessarily suggest jumping immediately into a custom design, because I think it’s worth taking your time in learning what you like (I know I certainly can’t stand today some of my drafts from two years ago), but there is still a very wide world of stock designs and semi customs out there to choose from.

I would also like to plug BR Pro Poker, a vendor on this site, who also offers great quality ceramic chips. They will be more expensive than ones from Tina via Justin, for sure, so if budget is the biggest priority for you, then this would not be your best option. But at a minimum, you should browse their catalogue to see their really creative designs - all part of broadening those horizons: https://brpropoker.com/

At the end of the day I own sets from Tina and BR Pro and love both of them, and happily recommend either, for whatever quantity fits your budget and needs, if my one voice matters for anything on that front.

thank you man I appreciate it. I am not out of the country though, so it shouldn't be a problem. For some reason it says im in argentina, Im trying to get that fixed.

With your budget you can almost double the chips for your new set if you go through the group buy mentioned above. I like the feel of the ceramics myself. I play tourneys on the vegas strip and some wsop events. I've played with a lot of chips and I can't complain about ceramics when compared to the Bud Jones at the wsop and the various clay and plastic chips on the strip. I have a tournament set and just ordered a cash set from the group buy. Best of luck. Oh, I like the Taj Mahal set from your selection. They were 3rd on my list. I went with the Cantina below for the cash set.

^^ This is the way.

Also, ask for help regarding your set breakdown. Chances are that 500 chips isn't optimal for your purposes.

Seconding this. I'd make a thread with a description of your game, how people play, how experienced they are, what the total cash on the table usually ends up at, if the stakes will ever change, etc. For my first set I started out with a 600 chip set which turned out to be entirely unnecessary, I could've easily gotten by with 400.
