When is enough.. enough? (1 Viewer)

I could count but I’d guess I’ve owned 15k to 20k Paulsons, Chipcos, and BCCs. But I never own more than a few thousand at a time because that’s all I need. I do enjoy buying chips, but I really feel no need to pile up sets upon sets upon sets. I think @detroitdad can relate.

You are correct. I don't like to keep more than 6 sets at once. One limit set, five cash sets. Honestly, this feels like way to many. Three of the five cash sets can spread two tables. I host two table events 2-3 times a year.

I may be adding another Paulson set next month. If that happens. I will have to sell one of my sets. I'm not sure which one. Maybe it will be a poll lol.

When I get my Dunes cash set! And maybe a cali set one day...then it will be enough. Right? Right?

So I just got my CPC cash set and as I look at my collection I have to ask when is enough enough?

It goes back to 2005 when I ordered my Classics. I know many hate them but I just can’t let the tourney set go, too many memories.

I was part of Chiptalk back in the day and then found PCF just before Covid. Quickly ordered a Rounders tourney set as it’s my favorite movie. Eventually added Rounders cash to complete the set.

Next up was my giant HSI cash set and then I took the deep dive into CPC starting with a tourney set and then just got my cash set last week. Mixed in between those I got a ceramic replica set of the WSOP set from ABC.

As many of you know, it’s easy to focus on what’s next….. I can’t afford the grail sets so they are out of reach. So it’s either another CPC design or maybe one or two of the great looking replica sets out there. So many options!!

I just grabbed a barrel of each as I didn’t want to get them all out!!! Here’s a little photo lineup.

Classics - 1,500
Rounders Tourney - 1,500
Rounders Cash - 1,000
WSOP Replicas Tourney - 1,500
HSI - 2,000
CPC Tourney - 1,400
CPC Cash - 1,100

Total - 10,000

Get rid of those classics and get yourself a nice BCC set (you can thank me later). I’m with @upNdown and @detroitdad , keep a few ”current” sets and sell/buy new ones when you get bored. The journey never ends, or at least that’s what I’ve found.

The journey doesn't ever end. Honestly, I wouldn't want it to. I used to buy and sell sets on a monthly basis. A few years ago when the market went bat shit crazy I had to slow down.

^^ this used to be so much easier to do than it is now.

True for the pandemic years but the market definitely seems to be cooling off now. Grails are still grail but a lot of the other stuff that used to get insta snapped now just sits there. Good thing for sure

. But my players prefer my 44mm cards mold CM tournament set over my 39mm CPC CM tournament set!
Yeah that’s the thing nobody at my home game even cares at all what chips we’re playing with. Still fun to have something you enjoy though.

I was 10 minutes late to a friend's home game last week and they had already started counting out chips for people using dice chips because they're all idiots and don't care. I made them put them back.

Never sell sets, always ragrets

Just add on

BCC, Paulson, TRK, ASM/CPC,…
Cash, tourney (T5, T25, T100)
Limit (denom, non denom)
Leaded THC, RHC, TRK
Casino, customs
House molds

Combine above and you have plenty to build & collect

in the neighborhood of 15x that amount, but haven't counted in awhile. My advice, stop before it's too late.

Many years ago I wanted a fountain pen. I then found the fountainpennetwork.com (FPN) forum and fell down a rabbit hole. I really liked a particular kind called the vanishing point which is a retractable fountain pen like a ball point. I decided that I was gonna get one of every colour. Then one day I looked down at this:

Every year more and more versions came out and I was never able to get to a "complete" collection. I then came to ask myself the question, are you a user or a collector? I decided I was a user and not buying stuff just to keep on the shelf. So I sold almost all of them (incidentally with smart buying all at break even of a small profit). I still have some very nice pens which I use, I just don't need a hundred.

Same thing with poker chips, found PCF, fell down the rabbit hole, bought far more sets than I need. I'm now paring back, spending more on sets that I want and use and not just collecting for collecting sake. You'd have thought I'd have learned the first time around but apparently I'm slow.

Because friends don't let friends play with dice chips. Not all heroes wear capes.

Don't even get me started on dealer buttons. I have a self dealt game with no real need for dealer buttons, and yet I have almost a table full. If my group that plays every other week used a different button each time we played, it would take nearly 17 years before we had to repeat a dealer button based on my current collection. There are more on the way as we speak, and I JUST ordered a new custom one a few moments ago. These make me happy also.

For me…………
Spending more than 6 years to complete my favorite set to the point that it would support most any cash game that I might host.
There are still some things that I will eventually ad to the set but for now it’s complete.
It’s all GRAVY from here. ;) View attachment 1013605
The next part of the journey is enjoying the set with other chippers and great friends as OFTEN as possible. :) One can never get enough of that. View attachment 1013606

I couldn't have said it better my friend. Now, I interpret this post as that you no longer need that beautiful Inplay set? Just sayin.....

Yep, I’m a degenerate….. just ordered 1,400 of the Bellagio replicas through the group buy…… sigh……. I just love those designs, reminds me of my first trip to Vegas in 2003.

I thought a bit about buying these as well, or a couple of the other cards mold replicas. They are really cool and a value. But I reached out to fellow chipping buddies and let them talk me off the ledge as I just don’t remotely need them:

Yeah, main reason I pulled the trigger was the price. $0.33/chip is such a value. I ordered a sample set and liked them. Worst case scenario is I sell them and it’s only a few hundred dollars invested and not thousands

You're not degen - listen to this story...

I was trying to convince my friend to get some of theses. We've known eachother our whole lives, had multiple trips to Vegas, stayed at the mirage and played at Bellagio. HE'S too degen to care about chips!!

I was planning on pulling the trigger "for him" ;) regardless if he agreed or not, but after he said "you'll buy them anyway" I had to put a hard stop on that plan just to spite him (some things haven't changed much since we were kids). He'll hear this story at the next game :)

I've bought a ton of poker chips, built little sets, but it becomes clear to me fairly early in owning them if they are going to be around a long time. Most aren't. with that said, i am sitting on 2 sets that I will probably die owning.

the rest come and go, happy to have had them, happy to have compiled them for others, but also happy to see them go, replenishing shelf and wallet space for other chips.

I am trying to add another set to the forever pile, its just harder to truly impress me now.
