My next home game I'm trying to put together the largest tournament style game we've had. To date we've just done 4 or 5 handed tourneys where 2nd gets their buy in back and the winner takes the rest. Last time we played we played 10c/20c cash game.

But next time we want to do another tourney and I'm hoping to add a few more players to hopefully bring it up to 8 handed or maybe even a full table.

If I wanted to have 1st, 2nd, 3rd take home winnings what would you recommend the percentage of the total bank be?

I'm thinking 1- 50%, 2- 30%, 3- 20% but I'm wondering what others do just to get an idea of what we should do

Our payouts are probably a little top-heavy, but most of the OG regulars are against flattening it.

We pay 100/0 with five players or less, 80/20 with 6-7 players, and 70/20/10 with 8-10 players. I think the threshold for paying third place used to be 9 players instead of 8.

Might be weird, but here is ours (always 20 players max):

2-5 players > 1st = 100%,
6-9 players > 2nd = 30% and 1st = 70%
10-14 players
> 3rd = 10%, 2nd = 30%, and 1st = 60%
15-20 players
> 4th = 5%, 3rd = 10%, 2nd = 30%, 1st = 55%

I like the 60/30/10 option. The guys I play with might not be happy if 10% is less than what the buy in is but with rebuys I don't think that would be a problem. May have to give that breakdown some consideration

I adjust payout positions based on entries. I never want less than 17% of the participants to receive cash, and as the tournaments get bigger the payout positions continue to get closer and closer to 18%. It stops at 47-52 because I don't have enough chips in any given set for more than a 50-person tournament. These percentages are approximations; actual payouts are rounded to a $5 increment while staying as close to this as reasonably possible. The last cash position will always be awarded slightly more than their original entry (the only one this really impacts in my schedule below is the 9th place finisher in a larger tournament - the payout will end up being closer to 2.5%).
