What are your grail chip sets? (2 Viewers)

Don’t you feel like a chipper must have been involved in the design of the RCVLs?
“We need shapes inlays! No, wait!!! We need DOUBLE SHAPED INLAYS!!!!!!!!”
I’m picturing that hippie who saw the double rainbow.
Great designer.
Appears he created or had a hand in several awesome Paulson sets.
This is the guy Krish met with.. he probably has more info on all the great sets he created for different casinos.
Obviously Regency Cruise Line (the same ship planned for use as RVCL) was his design also (using the same hotstamp / edgespot and shaped inlay progression).

What do you guys think about this

Man oh man... original Nevada chips. Big red denoms, shaped inlay, spot progression and of course Gorgeous colors... not sure what else you could want!

I feel like we don't see the 214 pattern of that $1 very often. Pretty neat.
On many older chip manufacturers most used 214, 314 Esquire common... but for Paulson I only know of these and the Gray Fitzgeralds

Leaded bricks! I absolutely love that chip! Just wish an all Silver Club was possible. That $25 is a show stopper.

I love the Nugs and not going anywhere... but I wouldn't say a "show stopper" or do you mean the story of how they snuck out of Nevada? Lol
Just horsing around lol. Loved those in Ohio two years ago.

I guess my overall answere on a true "Grail Set" would be to bring this set back to playable

Limited edition Binions Horseshoe 48mm Fat Hats! OMG what a dream! I know it's only 43mm but throw this one on the top end

Now that's a set I would Die to own... I'm sure someone here remebers the story, some guy on eBay had all of them.but only wanted to sell as singles. I missed out on the upper denoms and only grabbed 8 of the hundos over about 2 years... most of the time I got outbid.

Even a sample set would be amazing! But even Just to get a chance to play it would be amazing!

This is probably sacrilege to some, but the more I look back at them, I feel like the Jack Detroits are a truly outstanding casino chipset, and grail-worthy RHCs even though widely owned.

First of all, they were all mint (primarily and secondary) since the casino never opened.

Second of all, it included many standout chips.

My favorites are the primary 100, and secondary 1K and 5K.

Also partial to that plum-colored 500.

The watermelons were controversial due to some feeling that they caused dirty stacks, but I still loved them as 25s.

The only clunker in the whole set was arguably the blah secondary 100.

Nothing wrong with that! I trully feel the same about this one

Probably not everyone's Grail... but worthy enough for me to invest more than an entry level new car! Haha

Grail for me: Sundance LV and Paulson Le Noir. I know they exist and come up for sale every so often, but I'm basically retired from set acquisitions. My wallet is happier.

I was in refrence to the Silver Club $25 being a show stopper

I love those edgespots and colors on a green base. I must’ve mocked up something with equivalent ASM/CPC colors like 50 times.

IMHO...if we do take RHC in consideration...the primary $5/$25/$100/$500 HSI rack is hard to beat

How about one that most people will say "OMG those are hideously plain and ugly!"
20240209_090515.jpg

I think they are amazing! I love old school sets that didn't have to be super bright and flashy, a trip back into yesteryear!

I have to give all thanks to @allforcharity for helping me finish this sample... but another one that I would trully love to play IF there was a playable set.

These chips have such a great, leaded feel in play. I might have the only known playable cash set (with shaped inlay Cavanaugh $1s).

I do not recall ever seeing or hearing of a playable quantity... so I must ask. Should I book a flight or when you get a chance would you possibly pretty please share a picture with your peers? Playable to the frac? To the $1? Literally one of my absolute favorite sample sets!

I suspect my favorites are quite different from most. In the first place, I have no use whatsoever for chips that don't include the casino's location. Secondly, I don't consider Paulsons to be the be-all and end-all of poker chips.

My actual grail set includes only three denominations. I doubt if a playable set exists. I grabbed two racks of the $1s, but only a couple of each of the other two.

My runner-up would be the Bahamias, especially if they include racks of the Millenium $5s.

IMO, the strongest US casino set top to bottom is the Renton, WA Treasures. It's hard to fault them in any way.

Aztars could be in the running, particularly if you overcome the weak MO $5 by using the brilliant Gear (Bentax?) replacements (or combining Aztar casinos).

(This last might be my favorite chip photo ever -- sorry, but I've forgotten who took and posted it.)

Why not! We all have our own idea of what sets a grail from everything else apart. We could argue for hours about who is right and who isn’t - I don’t think we could come to an agreement and I don’t think it would matter.

J.A.C.K.s are not a grail for me but I would be lying if I told you I hadn’t been tempted to buy some in the past. I think they’re great.

In my opinion what sets a grail set apart is provenance because that’s the only thing that can elevate a set above everything else.
More broadly I would describe a grail set as :
(1) to have historical value for poker players, for the gaming industry, maybe for the hobby. Old school sets don’t necessarily fit that description. Very few sets actually fit that description. And I think it’s worth adding that what was of importance yesterday, might not be tomorrow so the bar has to be high!
(2) be available in playable quantity such that you don’t have to recreate your own tribute chip in the line up to make it playable
(3) have desirable design and production attributes with no importance given to condition.

For the record I own:
- Playable set of Silver Stars
- Playable set of Regency Cruises
- Playable set of Lake Elsinore
- Unplayable set of Silver Saddle
- Unplayable set of Lakeshores
Mostly old school stuff with great design features etc (in my opinion at least) and yet I still think I’m missing a true historical grail…Binions maybe?
