what are Empress and Empress Star ? (3 Viewers)

Thanks for the replies, @Josh Kifer and @WedgeRock. Having always been outside of the inner circles, I can see how people could have been upset to feel excluded. I also fully understand keeping those types of purchases limited in scope.

Internet + anonymity = questionable people making questionable choices. I have deep seated trust issues so if I was in, I would be keeping lots of folk out.

Edit: not that I'm implying there on questionable people on this forum. Just generalization, that's all. I would be weary of people in a potential big purchase if I had only a small interaction on the internet with them. Sorry if my comments have caused additional butthurt.

It was a rather huge dust-up. My advice, grab samples, see what's out there, and find your own personal Grail. Sets will come and go, but when you find that one you want, AS and BTP don't honestly matter that much. It'll save you money instead of spending those huge prices.... It all comes to what you want. I grabbed a set called Antique Rose that totally took that spot in my heart...

There was THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of chips purchased. Total outlay, I would guess, was well above the annual salary of the average PCFer. Not to mention the possibility that the purchase would be canceled if the truth came out. And (not that it silenced it), but the concern over flippers.

I can understand keeping things under wraps.

There’s a lot of great chippers still here, not every new member needs to be introduced to past drama.

Bro, there’s a lot of great chippers who aren’t here as well... and that’s a shame.

But Yeah, every new member who asks... deserves to know the Truth about these chips, especially if they are considering buying them.

I was pretty oldschool on CHiptalk. I went away from the forums for about 5 years, only recently came back to purchase from Jim again, because I caught the chip bug recently...

I had no idea about the drama, and I’m shopping around for chips, so of course I see a bunch of shiny new expensive chips on the second hand market... I’m thinking... “what is this Empress Star and why aren’t any of them used at all?” Way too rich for my blood so I pass...

Anyways man, as a consumer, I deserve to know the truth. As a chipper I deserve to know the truth.

I could really care less about “the drama” but it really irks me and that you would try to stop people from explaining the situation and telling the truth about where the chips came from.

Hell, I even think it’s pretty cool that people pulled this buy off...

But guys don’t deceive people by sweeping it under the rug, if I would have pulled the trigger and spent thousands... and found out after... I would be beyond upset, I would feel swindled.

Bullshit. What planet do you live on? You have the right to not be deceived, but that is not the same thing.

And there you've stated both sides of The Great Divide.

IMO: StarChips and BTPs were both private projects, both really cool. They were also nobody's business beyond those involved, before or after their completion.

p.s.: It might help if you borrowed a dictionary and looked up "truth" and "swindle".

I do think I have the right to know the truth as a consumer, and in life about everything. I know it’s my job to find it out, to research and to make decisions. But I do believe it is a right.

I know in life, in general, people are going to try to hide and manipulate the truth in order to benefit from peoples ignorance.

In the beginning of this thread, a man posted a quote from the WIkipedia about the Empress Star Cruise Ship, saying it was a Fictional Cruise Ship... blah blah.

That sounds like the truth... good information for me... a consumer.

Then later another guy, says ...it was a casino that didn’t open, it happens sometimes... blah blah...

That is deception... at least as far as what this forum is supposed to be for ... to help chip buyers and collectors gather information about buying poker chips.

Anyways man, again, good work to the peeps that made it happen, sounds like the $h%T hit the fan though. Cool Chips. :) but seems like a lot of bad blood, and I understand both sides.

I just hope for the sake of this forum and the credibility of its members, that the truth is what we are striving for. This forum should be about helping people find what they want and make good decisions... it should not be about making sure people do not find out the truth and securing lofty profits of select members. If it were the later, I wouldn’t be a member and neither would your sponsors.

I agree that they were really cool. And they were nobody's business assuming they are never sold.

However, it does become the business of a potential buyer. If I was a new chipper contemplating purchasing these chips, and I couldn't determine how the chips came to be created, I would assume they were counterfeits and move on. After all, GPI doesn't create chips for this market.

Edit: re-worded to reflect my intent.

To be fair, this is a pretty involved community with lots of posts (meaning a pretty endless amount of threads to read when searching).

As someone that’s still learning about our secondary market, GPI, group buys, and just chips in general, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend a day at work googling cruise chips and casinos with circus chips.

I would guess that like me and OP, every new chipper or member is going to ask this question. What trash that one person always has to poop on the thread and the helpful people that answer it to the nest of their ability. Thanks to all the same people I always say thanks to for adding a bit more info than I knew before.

First off, I'm not your bro so save it for someone you actually know.

My post had nothing to do with trying to suppress the "truth". The story of how they came to be is cool, and if that is shared I'm all for it. I've ended up with cash and tourney sets of ES chips and they are awesome.

The reason for the post I made (the one you quoted) is that I don't think it's necessary to rehash the drama that came out of the private venture buys. That bullshit can stay in the past.

Okay, good to know.

I just found out about all this, literally in the past 12 hours, so it’s not my past, it is very much my present.

And I really don’t care one way or the other, it’s a cool story that I am blessed not to be a part of. Sounds like a nightmare for some people.

Cool chips, Nice scroe. Hope it was worth it.

I wasn't in the original buys, the chips I have came from the secondary market. The chips are worth the money I spent, some of my all-time favourites.

There's no reason for it to be a nightmare for anyone. Cool chips were made, not everyone got some, life isn't fair, blah blah blah. They can be found on the secondary market, and if one doesn't like them there are plenty of other great chips out there.

Most of the drama came from childish jealousy and/or people thinking they "deserve" something. But I'm getting back into the drama...time to step back
