Does anyone live in Washington state, and own a restaurant/bar? Maybe this has been discussed but if you own a bar whose alcohol and food sales would "benefit from a gambling element" you can be granted a gaming license by the state, which would entitle you to ordering chips of your choosing, from manufacturer of your choosing.

Maybe I'm just talking out of my behind....but its worth consideration?

I would imagine that there is gaming commission oversight over the process that would prevent you from just ordering a giant custom home set this way. If you just mean to legitimately run a gambling establishment, there have been a few Paulson sets come through the Chip Room that presumably were taking advantage of this.

Ace's Casino & Sports Bar and Point Defiance Cafe & Casino are two recent sets that are Paulsons from restaurant casinos in Washington, now defunct.

One big problem (I think) is a very high minimum order. You would need to be a group buy, and I guess they would be live chips. It would be a mess IMO. Someone here will chime in with the minimum....

Ahhh, well was just thinking out loud. If i win the lottery, I guess ill move to washington for a few years and get myself a bar and a gaming license..;)

Minimum 100,000 chips, last I heard.

I'd be fine with getting licensed, opening a joint and ordering 250k chips to have access to those spot patterns and colors. Really, I would. But it's not gonna happen, so it ends there.

So...in fact, you would not be fine with it. Gotcha..

???

If you line up the buyers and guarantee the $, get everyone to agree to spots and colors and inlay design, you'd be the MC of the mother of all underground group-buys. You think GPI/Paulson is going to just make chips for a new business with no track record? How much for a liquor and gaming license. Yeah, it'd be fun, but suicide for any career. So I'd do it, I'd gladly do it given the resources. But, like stocky, I too will need to play the lottery. I'll be sure to let you know when that happens....

Might be 100K to get the 'best price'. Josh@apache had some pretty high minimums to meet from GPI, and pretty sure the original Pharaoh's order from Trademark was 100K.

I thought he had a min of 1000 per color/stamp...

I thought he had a min of 1000 per color/stamp...

That was ~our~ minimum purchase quantity from him..... not his minimum purchase quantity from GPI. He bought thousands which were kept in stock at GPI, awaiting specific hot-stamp orders (avalon, private cardroom, grand cardroom, custom stamps, etc.)

I think if I won some huge powerball jackpot, I might have to do that just to fuel the degenerate in me. Drop a $1M on a crap ton of custom chips, with fracs and large spread of values, and close the place down day before opening. Who really wants the headache of actually running a card room? (Other than Mr. Tree) Then, I could be a CHIP GOD, filling the desires of the unwashed masses of fellow chippers to make awesome playable sets that will be in the hands of hundreds of players.

I would be immortal in the chip world, my chips would outlast my lifetime and chippers will tell tales of the glory of the provider who gave these sets to the people.

All would love me, all would kneel before my greatness.

okay, got carried away there, a bit over the top, but it would be more fun than pissing away $1M for 1 night of VIP with bottle service ;)

maybe.....

I dunno about minimums and the legality of getting a "casino license" just to make custom chips, but I sure feel like the owners of Ace's and the Oak Tree were chippers at heart. :)

Paging @Chicken Rob. There has been talk of doing something like this in NH. I am in for 2-3K if this happens. Another 1500 in tourney chips if we get those too.

I feel like if you were willing to spend that much, Paulson would probably just make them for you and the casino part probably isn't necessary.

this is true to an extent, but it's virtually guaranteed that even if you got the go ahead you'd still be limited in the molds (likely only the "Paulson" and "Suits" molds) and spot patterns available.

also considering that GPI has removed itself from the home market and no longer makes available the semi-custom hotstamp options we had through Apache, i wouldn't be surprised if they declined an offer to buy 100k chips (which was the minimum for the original Pharaoh GB).

Maybe oak tree, but not aces. I used to play there a lot and knew the on site owner, if it would be financialy feasible the room would still be open today. Josh tried many different things, including a last ditch effort in a location right off the freeway, but ultimately it couldn't work. The problem in Washington is the tribes that operate the big casinos up here have a shit ton of power in the legislature and influence laws getting passed that make it VERY hard for small, private card rooms to survive, let alone compete with the big casinos.

The Highway 9 and Aces rooms were about fifteen minutes apart from my house, and in this area if you were going to either card room you were in most cases driving right by the Tulalip casino to get to a smaller place. That's tough to overcome alone, throw in the difficulty of not being a tribal property and it makes it real tough to make a buck (although, with the highway 9 I've heard some interesting stories over the years about that place, could be other reasons they couldn't make money).

I know you said it tongue in cheek, but it's almost true that if you open a small card room up here anywhere within an hour of one of the tribals, you might as well be doing it just for the chips...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... oh wait, you were serious. ;)

Cool idea, as always, but unlikely to come to fruition without a minor miracle, methinks.

Yeah if it was simple it would've happened already.

Then we'd need to watch out for gpi spies. I reckon they'd be pretty pissed to be deceived.

On a different note, Dolphin Chips are similar to bud jones chips iirc. Has there ever been an attempt to get sets through them?

I had a GPI sales guy on the phone ~5 years ago and talked about doing a 100K order. $1 per chip and he didn't imply there were limitations to edge spots or colors, nor stating I needed to have a license. Someone motivated should call (number via site) and get the latest rules to GPI chip buying. I'm in NH, maybe there are state limitations and we have none? I dunno, but buying GPI might not be as hard as the rumors state.
