Word up, homes.

I was pondering the age old dilemma of freeze-outs versus rebuys. If you're out early in a freeze-out, you're out, no exceptions. This encourages more considered, tighter play (by and large), but if you play well and get a bad beat, it can feel a little harsh.

On the other hand, if you're out early in a rebuy, you can rebuy (really). This encourages more reckless play (amongst some) because the immediate risk is no longer present. Players will generally take more risks (although that's relative, of course).

I was thinking about having a "Bad Beat Rebuy" as a solution, but thought I'd sound it out here (as I tend to do with my crackpot ideas) before mentioning it to the regs.

Basically, you could rebuy within the first X rounds like a normal rebuy, but only if your losing hand was of a certain rank or higher - for example, your losing hand must be at least a flush to be able to rebuy.

Why? Because the more reckless who think "f*ck it I'm going to go all in with Ace high" know they're out for good if they lose, whereas someone sitting on a low-end full house who gets beaten by a better full house (or quads or whatever) who may have been playing well but just got very unlucky can rebuy if they choose.

I dunno, it just stops the main criticism of rebuy games, which is they tend to promote more aggressive, "lucky" play, whilst also preventing someone playing a solid game who nevertheless gets unlucky and has to go home in the third blind level.

Playable idea?

Tough to quantify what constitutes a bad beat, imo.

What about the guy who is a huge favorite when all the money goes in, but villain sucks out the two-outer on the river? Doesn't always have at least a flush, but still a good shove, bad call, and a worse beat.

We apply an intrinsic value to the re-buy chip -- if unused, it can be redeemed for a free add-on at rhe end of the re-buy period (typically about 25% of the starting stack size). Combined with healthy starting stack sizes (200bb to 300bb), it pretty much shuts down the 'reckless' re-buys sometimes found in smaller stack (and smaller entry fee) events.

It's still possible to play loose (though maybe not draw-reckless) with a qualifying hand.

In other words, I could have a qualifying hand but know I was beat but shove anyway just because I know I am eligible for rebuy.

Your idea may address some of the donkament play, but it won't eliminate it.

Thanks folks - all valid points. I might look at that rebuy chip/add-on idea.

We do this as well, and give players who have their rebuy chip and are severely short stacked at the end of the rebuy period the option to rebuy if they wish.

I like that option! (y) I'm guessing they surrender any chips they have if re-buying?

Interesting... please define "severely short stacked"... I assume it's some percentage of the starting stack?

Ive played a lot of tournaments with only one rebuy per 10 people. So 30 person tourney would have 3 rebuys total. No one dan rebuy twice and if two or more bust in same hand they are all allowed to rebuy if there is still a rebuy left

That's my own situation if I use it, actually. Anyone who has a rebuy chip can do this, regardless of stack size. Currently when our rebuy period ends, the next level has a bb that is 1/12 of a starting stack (that will change this year, as the rebuy period will be shorter). So, if you do this, you get a stack of 12bb. It's up to the player to determine if the cost is worth it.

Personally, I would have to be under 4 bb at the end of the rebuy period to consider it.
