Ultrasonic Chip Cleaning (9 Viewers)

Great info thanks again! I’m excited to clean all these chips so I can play with them

Which chips are you going to clean, if I may ask? Also, pR0n of before/after is 100% required. One thing that I didn't mention is that I've almost always needed to oil my chips after a dip in the U/S. They come out a little dull, but proper oiling brings them back to perfect health.

Haha that’s a great idea!

I’ll be cleaning Very dirty Horseshoe Southern Indiana chips (especially the white $1) and my old 13g casino poor mans chip set that’s never been cleaned in 15 years.
So mineral oil then. My order will be:

1. Presoak in room temp d. water w dawn soap.
2. Ultrasonic 1-2 min
3. Rinse
4. Repeat US if necessary
5. Vinegar bath
6. Rinse and dry (over night)
7. Oil (minimally)
8. Use nice clean chips to eat some guacamole :sneaky:

Don't oil the old 13g chips. Those are most likely plastic slugged chips and will NOT absorb the oil. The Paulsons are RHC, so they'll do fine in both the U/S and with oiling after. The vinegar will only be necessary if there's an odor on them (like smoke). Pre-soaking ... my man @Ben8257 must have gotten to you! He's got an amazing regiment for cleaning, all without an U/S. I don't know how Ben doesn't go mad from hand cleaning. But I don't think you'd need to pre-soak. It won't hurt, but I don't know if it's necessary.

90s is the max I'd ever leave my RHCs in the U/S. It'll get 95% to 100% of crap off of them. Some of the H&C's around the border might need a toothpick or toothbrush to really get em clean.

I rinse my chips in continually refreshed clean water right after they come out of the U/S; I don't want the detergent staying on them too long.

This advice is gold! Thank you

Has anyone messed with denture cleaning tabs to clean a hand full of chips?

I’m wondering if my $100 ultrasonic purchase was over kill for cleaning 2500 chips ONE TIME. I think maybe I need to keep buying more chips to make the purchase worth it...

Good call. What do you all use your ultrasonics for other then poker chip cleaning?
I don't. I only have ceramic chips so multiple US baths won't hurt them. I have a buddy who borrowed my US to clean the bolts of his rifles though. Worked like a champ. It is also very safe to use on tools.

I’m sure this has been answered somewhere already but I’m having trouble finding it. But what chips are we NOT allowed to put in the ultrasonic?

I believe ASM will be destroyed

For ASM and CPC chips, it's not about whether you use an ultrasonic or not, it's about what you use as a cleaning agent. Bad things have happened to these chips with both TSP and metasilicates. Safest method so far is dish detergent, a scrub brush, and elbow grease. Nobody has yet *publicly* announced a detergent that is both effective and safe for ASM/CPC chips in an ultrasonic cleaner. If someone's got the right answers, I'm all ears. Heck, I'm just about on my knees and begging.

I got my ultrasonic and I'm going to be cleaning my HSI hall today. Quick Q's:
1. I don't have distilled water, is that okay or should I wait until I get some? My water here is very hard.
2. Can I US starburst chips?
3. My chips smell so when I do a vinegar bath do I have to rinse them w/ water first?

Using an ultrasonic cleaner without distilled water is wasting time and electricity.

Oh wow, I better get some before I start. I didn't realize it was that important. Can you tell me why exactly, just curious.

Minerals and/or gasses in the water apparently interfere with the cavitation effects of the ultrasonic process.

All I know is that running one with tap water multiple times and long soak times produced no cleaning effect, while using distlled water (and no other changes whatsover) resulted in cleaned chips in lterally seconds.

Great info thank you. I searched every corner of my garage and found a single gallon of distilled water.... We're doing this :cool
