I just recently got back from Vegas and I like to collect a few poker chips from places I’ve stayed at or visited. I noticed that some of the casinos have two different versions of the same denomination. Are they phasing out one design, or is it a secondary set?

At Park MGM and Ellis Island, I found a labeled poker chip and also a hot stamped version.

It's not a secondary. It's an alternate primary.

Secondary chips are kept in the vault and not brought out unless the primary set is compromised. It would probably take some real coordination to minimize disruption of operations if it needs to happen.

These are both in use because they are using the same edge spots, base colors. They're just newer chips that have been put into circulation along with the older ones. I know a lot of the properties have been switching to hot stamped chips over the last few years and it's been the new move.

Casinos that have switched to hot stamped chips include Caesars, Bellagio, Park MGM, New York New York, Flamingo, Ellis Island and more. Both Caesars and MGM owned properties. Those are the ones that have made the switch so far, so it'll be interesting to see what other casinos start to do next year or who knows.

Heard a story from a dealer at Sycuan about a rack (maybe 2) of $500s being stolen. They immediately initiated a chip redemption program for that chip and replaced all the $500s on the floor with the secondaries. They then scrutinized anyone cashing in the primary chips.

There are also examples of casinos that used both their primary and secondary chips (Aztar, Indiana and Empress, Illinois come to mind).

I experienced an odd thing in Poland
Two major casino operator HIT and Cristal, use two sets of chips at tables, one for roulette and another for other table games (blackjack and variations of poker: 3-card poker, russian poker, ultimate, etc)
Roulette chips have withe inlay, tables chips have black inlay.

They use chips with same design in each casino, just a numer identifies the location. Chips cannot be used interchangeably: once I tried playing roulette with blackjack chips, the dealer changed them with white chips and put them in the cash slot.

Another casino operator, Casino Poland, has just one set of chips and use them both on roulette and tables.

I personally love the look of the new Hot Stamps; though I always have been a fan of the hot stamped chips. My personal favorite is the Blurple :)

I don’t think I was a huge hot stamp fan, but the Ellis island and Park MGM chips just look beautiful. I am excited to see what changes are happening to other properties
