I got invited to a game last night. I didn't know anything about it coming in. I showed up to find:
  • A $20 buy-in for $1/$1 NLHE.
  • 10 dudes squished into a table that would better fit 8.
  • One spotlight lighting the table from the side making everything hard to read.
  • Beat up paper cards that I couldn't shuffle.
  • I don't need to tell you about the chips.
  • Guys who had never played poker before:
    • "Is this good?" "Yes, that's a flush."
  • I lost my $20.
Also, I had a blast with some great people and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I’ve played in these games. As long as you’re having fun! Depending on how receptive you think they’d be (and how smooth and subtle you can be) this could be a great opportunity to slowly introduce small improvements to the game. Maybe start by bringing a setup of Copags to the next game (don’t start them on Fournies or Desjgns just yet  :ROFLMAO:).

Finding a fun group of players that may not have “optimal” game formats or equipment is sometimes better than a game that does everything “right” but have players that take themselves too seriously.

But dang, $1/$1 w/$20 buy-ins… Was it a shove-fest or a limp-fest? Maybe it played more like LHE?

My plan is to invite the host to a game that I host and see if there is anything there he likes.

It alternated between shove and limp. Early on, I had J6 off-suit and somebody bet $5. Do I look at that as 5 big blinds or 25% of my bankroll? Either way, I folded. The flop came out 3 Jacks.

By the time I got felted there had been a number of rebuys and the experienced players were betting big.

Really, this is all that matters.

My brother got me an invite to a game and I didn’t believe him when he said 50 cent blinds and $20 buy in

No problem I just assumed he was wrong and not the whole group playing lol

12 guys, all wearing ties and smoking, playing Hold'em at a 48" round.

Kill. Me. Now.
But the article says up to 22 can play! Could you imagine that? All cards effectively dealt to a bigger version of that?!?!?!? Hahahah

I was invited to a similar set up as the op’s and of course it was in the hood. My coworker who invited me said “you said you like poker right, well here you have it” :confused These guys had 500 chips total no denoms, you get random colors- $20 buy in everyone gets 50 chips. I suggested we give the colors denoms to afford rebuys but host said it’s not necessary. There were 2 all-ins first orbit and the chip leader is allowed to let them rebuy, hand them 50 chips from their stack and pocket the money wtf. They didn’t know what beats what, raises were all jacked up, betting out of order, holding cards under the table or in their hand all bent, showing hole cards to neighbors- everything about playing like an amateur happened that night, you name it, it happened  :ROFLMAO:

My first casino tournament was at Paris and they only had two dealers. We had 14 at each table. You only got to touch the table when it was your turn to act, people slid out and you slid in. Not fun. Lost fast.

I played at a company poker night once where we had a single table tourney with 13-14 players. Even back then when I was a novice, it was painful.
