Hey thanks for any help you can provide. I tried using the tourney chip calc but for some reason I was just getting all zeros.

I am looking at setting up a 16-20 person tourney.
  • 6-7h duration
  • approx 30min blinds
  • dealer add on in the beginning
  • no rebuys
  • We were looking at a 1st, 2nd, 3rd payout structure
So I am looking for some good chip breakdowns because all I have now is a cash set and I want to get a whole separate tourney set so there is no confusion if we run a cash game after.

If you need anymore info let me know.

Thanks.

T10000 stacks (200bb)

lvl sb bb
L1 25 50
L2 25 75
L3 50 100
L4 75 150
L5 100 200
L6 150 300
remove T25 chips
L7 200 400
L8 300 600
L9 400 800
L10 600 1200
L11 800 1600
L12 1000 2000
L13 1500 3000
remove T100/T500 chips
L14 2000 4000
L15 3000 6000
L16 4000 8000 ***
L17 6000 12000
L18 8000 16000
remove T1000 chips
L19 10000 20000
L20 15000 30000

With 16 players, most events will end no later than L16 (L17 with 20 players). Using 25-minute levels, that puts the max total play time at 6:40 to 7:05 (plus breaks). 30-minute levels would push it well over 8 hours.

10K starting stacks:

12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
6 T1000
---------
35 chips

required chip set, 20 players:

240 x T25
240 x T100
100 x T500
150 x T1000 (includes 30x for T25/T100 color-ups)
10 x T5000 (for T500 color-up)
---------
740 chips

Additional chips required for dealer add-on (you didn't specify amount), re-buys, or larger starting stacks. I'd go with T1000 (T2000 maximum) for the dealer add-on to keep the overall times within your parameters (so an extra 20 or 40 x T1000 chips required).

For three payouts, I prefer 60%-30%-10% for serious players, 55%-30%-15% for competitive recreational players, and 50%30%-20% for social players (I'd actually pay four places for a social player event -- 40%-30%-20%-10%).

That’s the best advice you’re gonna get.
If you’re looking at expensive chips and you’re on a budget, you could shave off a rack and a half by going with only 8 x t25 and 8 x t100 per starting stack.
But I think most people with rather play with 12/12/ stacks.

What @BGinGA said...I run near that exact structure/setup (with some tweaks to make it quicker) and it has worked well.

Enjoy the hunt for chips ;)

Yeah I know that hunt is going to be crazy. I actually was looking at the apache poker chips site and was thinking about just getting a set from there.

Maybe one of these:

Pioneer Poker Chips

Casino Royale

Showdown

Pharaoh

Let me know if you have any opinions about these chips or any other suggestions.

Thanks.

Don't waste your time (or money) on the Pioneer or Casino Royal chips. The Showdowns (metal-slugged plastic) and Pharaoh's (china clay) are okay for what they are.

Get samples.

Pharaoh

If you're not in a hurry -- get samples. I think I even have a few spare Pharaohs chips laying around I could send as samples, I'd send them to you at no cost.

Around the time I bought my first Paulson chips, about 4 years ago, I bought a set of the china clay Pharaohs with around 600 chips for a tourney set (IIRC, it will accommodate 20 players with an 8/8/4/7 breakdown ($25/$100/$500/$1000), with a few more 1000 and/or 5000 chips for rebuys/colorups). They look good, the colors are a little muted, but the graphics are great and the different edge spots and patterns are what's great about this chip line. IMO. But I've never put them into play -- I've only ever hosted cash games since then, and not too many of those either. If you might be interested in the china clay Pharaoh's set, let me know, and I can send you some pics -- I'd sell you my set at less than new prices.

Or if you're interested in another (used) set, of china clay or similar, you could put up a post here on classifieds. I'm sure some other people may have some china clay or other tournament chips sets that may be better put to use in someone elses hands. .

Yes. I actually clicked on all the options, and the pharohs are the only ones I'd consider because they're the only set that doesnt have the same edge spots on each chip.
I don't know anything about the quality, though.

The Dunes chips also have different edge spots.

Thank's I'll take that into consideration. Besides the Pharaohs are there any tourney chips that are readily available that you would consider?

Hey thanks for the offer, I'll think about that. If I bought your Pharaohs are they the same ones that I could just order from apache or another sponsor just to add on?

What's your budget for ~800 chips?

I was really hoping for around 0.50 a chip which is why I thought those .42c chips would be nice. Cheaper is better as long as the quality is decent. But I can be somewhat flexible, plus I was thinking about buying more like ~1000 chips to make the stacks a little deeper, and have extras for dealer add ons (and possible rebuy tournaments at a later date). Likely we are going to try and do one tourney a month if we can.

Around .50 a chip I would recommend Majestic's or Dunes CC's Apache is a good retailer, you might find a slightly better deal if you wait or post in the classifieds.

You also might be able to pick up some aggressively priced used ceramics if you wait for a good deal too.

Get samples to see what you might prefer.

50c/chip is a hard number to match. It's above both the cheap and budget chips (typically 15c-40c), and below the mid-range stuff (60c-90c), unless you find it on sale or as part of a group buy.

For off-the-shelf chips, your best bet may be to stretch the budget a bit and go for a stock ceramic set. You could pick up any number of decent sets for around 59c per chip (min. 500 order), so you're looking at around an extra $66 or so for 740 chips. Or you could scale back your set requirements (see below) and still come in under your approximate $370 budget.

required chip set, 20 players:
160 x T25
160 x T100
120 x T500
140 x T1000 (includes 20x for T25/T100 color-ups)
20 x T5000 (12x for T500 color-up, includes 8x extras)
---------
600 chips

using these 10K starting stacks:
8 x T25
8 x T100
6 x T500
6 T1000
---------
28 chips

600 chips @59c each would run $354 plus shipping. A few more dollars if you still wanted the dealer add-on chips.

17 choices to choose from at the link below; all are decent sets for the $$. I'm a big fan of the Tiki Kings, Dropa Discs, Card Wars, and Lucky Dragons, but ymmv. Samples also available.

Hey Thanks those are great ideas, I have some flexibility with budget, since tournaments aren't going to be our main game I didn't want to drop a whole lot on them but I can go up if needed for a better overall chip. I have a sample of those tiki kings I don't know why I didn't think of them, thanks.
