hey everyone. I am brand new to poker and jump in head 1st and just purchased a chip set (China clay) from Apache poker. I want to find out the best way to do the blinds and what not. I wanted to do a T10,000 tournament. I got a 500 chip set
200 x $25 150 x $100. 100 x $500. 50 x $1,000

I just googled popular poker set ups and that’s what chips it told me to get. I hope I did. Or go wrong. How do I do the blinds for people? Does everyone start with 1,000 worth in chips? How often should I increase the blinds? Do I do re buy ins for the full 1,000 amount? Just general questions. It will be my 1st poker night. Lol and is there a place I can go on the poker forum for noobs where maybe all of the beginner questions are answered?

You won't be able to support T10k stacks with that set, at least not with re-buys. You'd need additional 1k and maybe some 5k chips to do that effectively.

With what you have, you can support T10k starting stacks of 12/12/7/5 (T25/T100/T500/T1000) for up to 10 players, but you wont have enough chips for re-buys.

You could do T5000 starting stacks of 20/10/5/1, and use 5x T1000 for re-buys. You can support up to 10 players with 8 total re-buys with what you have there.

You can start the blinds at 25/50 or at 25/25. T5000 @ 25/50 only starts with 100 big blinds. Not as much as I personally prefer to start a tournament with, but not horrible. 25/25 will put you at 200 big blinds to start.

I think ideally you would either add some T5 chips so that you can start at 5/10 blind levels (deeper starting stacks). Or add some more T1k's and/or T5k's so that you can run a T10k. You would only need about 100 more 1k chips and 25 5k chips to allow enough for 10 re-buys.

That’s a great breakdown, but for a beginner I’d stick with the one table amount until you know you’ve got a game that’s going to fly and grow.

For a T10000 tournament I favor a 12/12/5/6 (25/100/500/1000) starting stack, with some 5000’s for rebuys and later level colorups.

For 10 players you need the following amounts

120 25’s (starting stacks only)
150 100’s (starting stacks plus enough to color up the 25’s)
50 500’s (starting stacks only)
100 1000’s (starting stacks plus enough to color up all the previous denominations)
40 5000’s (used to colorup and rebuy)

You can round up on amounts for ordering requirements or extras or if you just want even racks. But that would be my minimums.

For blinds I’d start at 25/50 for a rebuy tournament or 25/25 for a non rebuy.
For rebuys I’d just give the player two 5000 chips and get him to make change from the big stack.

I’d stick with 15 minute blind levels in either case.

It’s cool. They are beginners. Either way works, it’s going to be over by 2.5 hours. Just tried keeping it simple for them but by all means drag it on and out. You’ve laid out a very good intermediate/advanced level tourney that works well for beginners as well. I just left some levels out, for simplicity and as they grow they can add them in.

To the OP,
Go over to an online tournament creator, such as www.blindvalet.fr .,..
There you can plug in various starting stack sizes, and tournament time length, and it will generate the levels etc...
Try to select/play for more than 3 or 3.5 hours, as that will be a fast luckfest...
With your existing set, try starting stacks of 6K-7.5K , and see what structure you get. Rebuy period should end at the 1St break, ( level 5 +/-), and depending on the BB at that level s starting stack, you may possibly have few or no Rebuys, so don't ASSume there will be 5-9 Rebuys, that can effect the calculation of blind levels and tournament end times ......

Awesome. Thanks everyone for y’all a advise. I worked last and just woke up, lol. I’m glade that y’all believe I should keep the 25’s. I saw some other posts and thought I made a mistake and should of just started at 100’s. Looks like my set up will work out for me. I will just need to get some more 1,000’s and 5,000’s.

100BB, 200, refers to how many blinds " worth" of chips you're starting the tournament with in relation to the 1St level's Big Blind.
25/50, for example, is a particular blind level during the tournament.
T is for tournament, If you do a T5K or a T10K, that is the size amount of each player's starting stack...
A T5 or T25 chip is a tournament chip, as opposed to a $5 or $25 cash chip.

The T just stands for Tournament. We say T1000 because the T1000 chip does not actually have $1000 cash value.

What we mean by the 100 big blinds and 200 big blinds is how many big blinds your starting stack is made up of. For example:

Starting stacks of T10,000:
12 x T25
12 x T100
7 x T500
5 x T1000

With a big blind starting T25, you would have 10,000 / 25 = 400, so you would start with 400 big blinds in your stack. If you started with a T50 big blind, now you have 10,000 / 50 = 200, so 200 big blinds in your starting stack. In a tournament, stack size is generally referred to in reference to how many big blinds you have. Once you get into the 10-15 big blind range you are considered short stacked and the strategy changes a bit.

I think what you bought is usable, but I'm guessing if you asked here first, I and others would answer that you overbought T25 and T500 and underbought T1000. But again, let's see if we can what you have work.

So this thread and others seem to support a "20BB" rule for estimating the end of a tournament.

Meaning when the blinds increase to the point where only 20 BB in play, the tournament will end on that level on average. So let's say you do a T5000 starting stack for an 8 player tournament with rebuys. So probably around half the players will rebuy, maybe some will go twice, let's say that brings the total to 14 buy-ins. Multiply by the starting stack and that makes T70,000 the total in play. So if you divide that by 20 you'll know the big blind amount when this would end would be about 3500. So let's see if we can come up with a structure that ends on 1500-3000 or 2000-4000 after 3 hours, if you do 15 minute levels, that's 12 levels. 50-100, 75-150, 100-200, 150-300, 200-400, 300-600, 400-800, 600-1200, 800-1600, 1000-2000, 1500-3000, 2000-4000.

This is just one way to solve the problem, there are many many opinions on this, but starting stack and level length are what determine the length of event.

So if you did this schedule we're going for T5000 Starting stacks. So I would do T25*12, T100*12, T500*3, T1000*2 with what you have to make T5000. (You'll notice you have a lot of T25, T100, and T500 left over.)

I know you mentioned doing T10000, but the total bank you have is only T116000, meaning you support 11 buy-ins max. T5000 is a better solution for your wants until you beef up on T1000 Chips.

But hopefully this is a good answer for what you want now.

I would suggest going to homepokertourney.com and download some blinds sheets. There is a wealth of info on that site for running a poker tournament.

Homepokertourney.com was the first complete site I remember for hosting advice, and I do apprecaite it. But frankly, a lot of members here put as much effort and more combined with their experiences to come up with better answers to the same questions.

Yup. I had gone to home poker tourney and used the distribution 1 that y’all see here. It showed to have 20 x T25 for each person at the start. I guess from what your saying that website let me astray.

On the same page further down, home poker tourney has this pic and it showed starting out with black 100. Where as it just showed me that the distribution 1 was with green 25. It also had talked about doing 4/3/2/1 as a good starting point. Crap ola

There are countless ways to do this. Starting with T25 chips is popular because that is the wsop format and used in other major events and there isn't confusion with cash chips at most home stakes.

But the thing is the smallest chips are only in use for the first few levels and only in blinds so a lot of people here don't see the sense in dedicating a high percentage of their set to those chips.

I think the consensus with base T25 is 12*T25, 12*T100 per player, and then figure the T500, T1000 to your desired stack, load up on T1000 and T5000 to accommodate rebuys. Planning 12*T25/12*T100 also affords you the opportunity to stretch your set using 8*T25/8*T100 when you need extra stacks.

Again, what you have is useable for sure, but you'll probably need an add on of t1000 chips down the line to do what you want.

I do see that I overbought the t24 for sure. After doing a lot more research on this website I have seen several people forgo the 25t altogether in a T10k setup. I was originally just trying to get the best poker set up for my home games with friends and family. I came across a set up for the whole T10k,000 earlier that BGinGA had suggested. I wonder if I would get more bang for my buck with the whole 100, 500, 1000, and 25,000 chips instead of the 25’s. Here is what he had. Quote”

Indeed, but with what you have you can adapt that structure and still do a 100bb tournament with your T25s and a T5k stack. Just use a T5k starting stack with the first level at 50-100. Then do 75-150, 100-200, 150-300 and then copy the structure above from 200-400 onward.

Just illustrates there are many ways to do this. @BGinGA has put many structures like this on here.

The best bang for your buck would have probably been 125/125/75/150/25 (T25/T100/T500/T1000/T5000), total bank 358k, plenty of 10k buy-ins and room to experiment with higher stacks.

But don't worry too much, enjoy what you have, it's workable, if you find you need more, add more later.
