Tournament Set Rotation (1 Viewer)

What I don't understand is why have a set you'll never play? What are you keeping them for? Why not just collect singles, or barrels (if you want to see face and side profile).

I expect you know that eventually you will get all your chips in play.... just maybe infrequently.

Life is short, and there is only a very small group of people who appreciate poker chips like this forum. If you don't use the chips, who will?
I battled with this before. It depends on your outlook and what makes you happy like @Jeevansluck said. They were all produced to be played with (outside of collectible singles I guess) but the collectibility of this hobby changes things. No different from other big collectible hobbies such as toys or cars. Do you want to play with that rocket-firing Boba Fett or would you rather it retain its $150,000 value?

I used to only collect and not play mint sets, but once I returned to the hobby I realize I would get more enjoyment by playing them.

I've got 3 tourney sets I rotate between and 3 cash sets (well, technically 4 as my kids kept some of the solids I acquired during my milling journey to use as "their" cash set).

I don't see ever going north of this, and instead would sell a set if I acquired another one.

I also am still relatively new. New to the hobby..only started hosting 8 months ago.

Still working on growing my home game, adding a cash game, creating chances to maybe give in to temptation. It is there, many temptations. Haha

I got into them because they make me happy. Not much other reason needed for me to have them.

You make a very good point! I guess I am on the other end of the spectrum, I don't really collect anything just to collect. My scotch collection is really small because of this. If I like a scotch, I drink it! Same with my rum collection, I actually need to replenish that.

For Pot limit/No limit cash games I usually have 4-6 sets I rotate through. Each set gets used about 4 times per year.

Then I have 1 limit set but that could be increased to 2 as I am having more mixed limit games now.

I have 1 custom tournament set for the 1-2 tournaments I have per year. 1 is plenty.

All in all Grant, I'm definitely sick. It's a bad addiction like no other.

However, things change. Needs and wants change. Maybe my game will grow and maybe I'll change my views and desires. Just as @RocAFella1 has.

You've been in this a long time. I'm not even a Padawan and you have Jedi Master hosting and chipping prowess. You don't know it maybe, but I look up to you man. You are a huge HUGE influence on me, and I appreciate this..

I expect you will continue rubbing off on me, and who knows how that'll affect my views.

EDIT : see ya in a few hours, I'll be by to pick you up. We can trade more chip talk! :):)

I'm the same. If something isn't getting played then it gets the chopping block.

It makes me a little sad when I walk by the chip cabinet and see them sitting there in their racks not being played. At the same time, it gets me excited for the next game.

Because this sight and good times with friends makes me much happier than just looking at them on the shelf.

That said, I still do get the collector side of things and where @Jeevansluck is coming from. I think, as a collector, singles and barrels would actually keep me happier in the collecting aspect vs sets. But I'm trying to avoid that black hole.

Also, I'd wager if Nav decides to grow his game he won't be able to help himself and will put those beauties on the felt. Only a matter of time :)

I can see the logic in preserving valuable sets; however;

imho, a set unused, is a useless set.

The only kind of value I’d have reservations about putting on the table would be chips at the level of ACF tourneys.

...well, even then I’d still play them. ;)

Not gonna lie - ACF tourney would be a tough one for me

I agree for the most part. However I can also understand how someone with OCD wouldn’t want a of ton flea bites created in their mint set (particularly RHC). There seems to be a fair amount of set collectors who derive happiness simply from owning the set.

That's how I feel. All said and done, I'll have 4 cash sets (CC's, RHC's, THC's, and a custom CPC set) and three tournament sets (Rounders and Key West CPC, BCC). I don't host enough of tournaments (maybe 6 or so a year) to justify buying another tournament set. I might make a custom add on to my CPC customs for a tournament set down the road, but that's about it.

I've put each tournament set listed above into play exactly once in the past six months. These chips are going to stay in excellent condition for a long while with light usage 2-3 times a year.

I host -- and/or supply equipment and direct -- about 20 tournaments per year, so lots of opportunities to use multiple chip sets. I've sold or traded off quite a bit of my collection over the last few years, focusing on completing long-running projects and keeping those sets that I most enjoy and that I know will see play time.

I currently still have five sets in the active rotation -- three Paulson THC sets (ES/AS), a Sun-Fly 43mm hybrid set (semi-custom), and a BCC TFP-mold set (GCOP) -- with five other sets still under construction: Paulson THC 818-spotted mixed casino set (needs labels), Paulson THC fantasy tourney set (needs labels applied), TRK casino scrown mold set (needs more T500s), Paulson THC casino tourney set (needs more T5000s), and a Paulson 43mm relabeled IHC mold set (needs inlay replacements) -- that will all get added to the rotation and see play once finished. That's a total of 10 sets for 20 events per year, or each set getting table time roughly twice anually. So the wear rates on valuable chips is kept pretty low, not that it's a major concern personally -- chips are tools and should get used imo.

However, I have at least ten other tournament sets that *could* theoretically see use (but probably won't) -- a Paulson THC relabeled fantasy set (in-progress, needs inlay replacements), a second Sun-Fly 43mm hybrid set, two ceramic sets (one PGI, one Chinese-made), a Gemaco clay set, a second TRK scrown set, a custom CPC FDL mold set, an ASM A-mold milled solids set (in-progress, needs labels), and two huge budget plastic sets (one slugged, one not) that are best-suited for really large events or when loss/damage is a potential concern.

Plus at least five existing cash sets that could be utilized for tournament play if so inclined.

Sounds like I have more downsizing to do. But that crap is really hard, at least for me. :(

I used to have six sets. Then I got control of my addiction and pared it down to the two custom sets
You should write a how-to book. Did you start attending chipanon meetings?

I host about 3 to 4 tournaments a year with about 40 people.
A paulson set that size is just too expensive for me to justify so I rotate between CPS, Royals, and BW with each set around 2500 to 3500 chips.
Do I really need that many chips or sets ... of course I do

I mean a 40 person tourney might need a 2000 piece set, depending on what your starting stacks, etc are... I like it!

12/12/9/9 @ 40players =
T25 x 480 (round to 500)
T100 x 480 (round to 500)
T500 x 360 (round to 400)
T1K x 360 (round to 400)

You're already at 1800, with no rebuys, no color ups, and no bigger chips to make deeper starting stacks. Very reasonable.

I like to be able to do anything from 5k to 100K stacks depending on the mood ... and I do 1M stacks with the CPS. so likely not ever using more than 1500 at any given time tops but it is almost like having more than 3 sets because colors are diff doing a 10k vs a 100k or 1Mk ...

I planned to rotate with these
F987664E-7CAA-447C-A460-12DAD7A038C8.jpeg

But I found it too hard to put dead mint chips into play so I let them go to a good home.

My IHC set never came to fruition or these would have been relabeled and put into rotation.

I actually have far less issue putting the ACF chips into play than some of the other sets.

For starters, they have already been used (in big-time events, too), so it's not like I'm preserving some mint grail quality by not playing them.

Biggest reason they don't see as much use as my other sets is due to the breakdown (T25s are impossible to get, and I haven't yet ordered CPC jockey molds to stand in). But with the movement towards T100-base sets, they were slated to get used this season, until covid-19 put a halt to live play.

It's daunting to see all of the chips on my shelves knowing that it's not possible/feasible to put them on the table for a real game right now. Maybe my wife will play me heads up... and then pay her losses to me out of my own wallet.

I wish my wife would play poker to begin with. All you chippers with the wives that play, you don't know how lucky you are..

Perhaps if my wife played poker, I could convince her to let me buy MOAR chips ! :ROFLMAO:

EDIT : @Ben8257 , you are luckiest SOB alive man! One could only dream to be so lucky to have a partner like you do!

DOUBLE EDIT : @Gear , you are right there too!:)

Oh, I know. That, plus her high tolerance for chipping activities, are two of the reasons I married her. :)

not the top two reasons, but two sound reasons nonetheless....

For full STT, I've 2 tournament sets :
- Hybrid 43mm - T25 or T100 based
- THC (currently being milled) - T100 based

I've also a 6-max set (very used THC currently being milled).

For tourneys my sets get rotated based on attendance since some sets are built to accommodate larger games.
Tourney
Large tourneys (20+) Royals
Small tourneys (20 or less) PNY

Cash
PCA
Outpost

I also have several unfinished projects that I either can't fund at the moment or that I can't find the pieces to finish them. I will soon be adding a couple custom sets to the rotation, one is the scrubby D's (TBD). Personal custom ceramic set which will have cash and tourney (TBD). I'm also placing an order for a large semi custom rounders tourney set from CPC. My Lady Luck set is kinda in the wind at this point thanks to the purchase of the CPC semi customs.
