Chip sizes for a tournament set...opinions about using >1 size of chip (2 Viewers)

Chip sizes in a tourney set. Sound off!

  • All chips should be the same size. 39mm? fine. 43mm? Fine. But choose one and stick with it!

  • A chip size progression is fine. First few chips 39mm then the upper denoms as 43mm, awesome!

  • Who cares? Tournaments are just a way to waste time before the cash game starts.

I want to build a custom relabeled tournament set.

What's your opinion about using more than 1 chip size in a set?

pr0n of your mixed-size sets encouraged.

I love it. I have a Tina Aria set and the 100k are 43mm while the rest of the set is 39mm. it makes it feel a bit more special when the big chips come out!

You know I’m a fan of larger chips for larger denoms in both cash and tournaments. Beyond aesthetics, you’ve eliminated any dirty stack issues you may have. Even when colors are radically different, I’ve seen an occasional blurple end up in a stack of canary yellow claws, simply, because it was a huge pot and the player was in a hurry to get back to regular play. With some massive tourney stacks, it helps.

Three sizes is glorious.

I love mixed size sets generally. I always think that big chips should be BIG CHIPS. People complain about storage, but if you just do Matsui/Apache racks, no big deal. Here’s some that I’ve assembled over the years:

I’ll just add on honestly for @liftapint that I don’t play tournaments often. In PLO it’s not uncommon to have 6 denoms in play.

The size disparity definitely helps eye up stacks from across the table. That element of tournament poker is definitely important but if tournaments usually have 3-4 chips in play maybe it’s less of an issue?

My vote remains the more the merrier.

IPS has 4 chip sizes and then multiple plaque sizes. I’ve never used them but I’m all for it.

Wow!!! Great sets!!!

Big chip best chip!

Nothing like plunking down a 43mm or 48mm just for the hell of it…

Bigger sized higher denom chips are fun!
Some players prefer all the same size, but i think they‘re not used to it ; )
3D printed racks for individual storage/transport helps a lot.
There are adapters to combine 39/43 Tina racks as well.
If you want all labels be the same size you can combine RHC/IHC/FHC (27mm)

Have fun!
