Hi All,
My understanding of toppers might be a little rudimentary. Could I purchase a topper and put it on a non-Poker Table? Would that work in the short time while I spend all my money on custom chips? Or would it be better to split the money between a table and a less expensive set of chips?

I know this is a Chip site. But if your goal is to host a home game I think having a nice table and chairs will go farther in creating an awesome experience.
That is not to say you can’t make do with a topper, lots of people on here host successful games with toppers especially if you’re limited on space.
For me having a nice table/chairs came first and my guests were very impressed. Chippers will definitely notice nicer chips, but regular folks probably won’t.
Do what makes you happy, if that means nice chips and a topper do that !
Welcome to the forum !

It’s a funny question, because up until very recently, toppers were pretty much exclusively for kitchen tables. With the rise in popularity of cheaper folding tables, people realized that a perfectly fitted topper was a simple upgrade. I’m amazed that the market has done such a 180 that somebody might think that toppers are just for poker tables.
Anyway I agree that the best thing you can do for your home game is having a nice casino-quality table and chairs. But that’s a minimum of a grand just for the table and you need a good sized room for that sort of thing. If you can’t swing that, a nice topper for the kitchen/dining room table works fine. Ideally it would be sized to the table, but close enough is close enough.

Edit: if you’re serious about plowing forward with a game, I’d suggest you waste as little money as possible on chips and focus on the table or topper first, and comfortable chairs if that’s in the budget. Find chips that stack well and have clear denominations. 90% of your guests won’t notice anything beyond that. Once you’ve got a game up and going, you can start blowing your money on fancy chips if you want. But I promise you, fancy chips matter to nobody outside of PCF.com

The thicker toppers like the PCF ones are great on a dining room table. The PCF ones are 6mm thick, which is a thick amount of padding.
They come up in the classifieds once in a while, and maybe there will be another group buy of them.

This is a great point. I remember Tommy talking about the importance to him of sourcing a thicker, more substantial material. It costs more, but having felt the thinner ones that are all over the market, I'd be shopping for a thicker one for sure. I remember searching myself for a bit and I'm pretty sure that everything on amazon was a thinner 2 mil pad.

This is kind of how I've done it with my game...got the table/toppers and very plush seat cushions for my chairs before I went too deep into chips. Now I'm starting down that chip road with some Tina/CPC stuff, but I went with tons of comfort/decor/custom items to get my players not only excited to play, but excited to stay as well.
