The Rings of Power ( Amazon ) (1 Viewer)

I've enjoyed the first 3 episodes so far. After watching the LOTR movies, I went back to read the books and made my way to The Silmarillion. I enjoyed understanding the background of where things came from and how they came to be, but that book was not a fun read. At times it was like reading a Physics or Math book. I had always hoped they would make a movie that leads up to the first great battle against Sauron or about the rings so I'm going to just sit back and enjoy the show and story.

My wife and I just started watching RoP and we were big fans of LOTR but not so much the Hobbit. I admit I never read the books, nor do I even watch much TV, but i do like good character development. That's what i mainly look for in any movie or show i watch today. I am not into the character, I wont watch the show.

So far (ive only seen the first 2 episodes), the character development in RoP is lacking. I find myself tuning out as I'm watching it. I'll likely continue watching because it's the only show my wife and I are watching together so it creates a great "netflix and chill" opportunity. I got snipped earlier this year so trying to get more use out of it. Haha. I know that took a turn none of you expected. LOL

If you're done having kids, getting snipped is a great decision. No worries free play all the time lol

Had an unplanned baby last year and wife said no more babies (I have 4 now)....we never used protection and she doesnt take the pill. It was an easy decision. She's trying to wean off nursing now so I'll get to play more. Now I just gotta figure out how to keep all the kids asleep without waking up.

2 kids was my ideal number, 3 was my limit. When she said she was pregnant with the 3rd I made the call and had it done. I've had 6 good years of not worry about that anymore :)

I'd classify myself as casual Tolkien fan at best. Growing up I was a huge fan of the fantasy genre in general.

I read the LOTR books in my childhood and enjoyed the movies when they were first released. Tried watching the first Hobbit a few years back and couldn't make it past the first hour.

I fell asleep around the halfway mark of episode one. It was just dull. Not sure what it is. Perhaps it's the casting. Actors are not very charismatic. Or maybe it's just the premise of a battle between forces of good vs evil is just old and tired.

Visual effects were good. But the action sequences just felt like watching a play through of a video game.

In terms of other recent fantasy books that have been turned into TV shows - I watched season one of Wheel of Time. Read those books and thought season one sucked. I thought they did an absolutely terrible job of casting for that show.

The first two epsiodes of House of the Dragon were in my opinion far better than the Rings of Power.

@inca911 In case you wanted to know what Rings of Power was in Hungarian

The series is plodding along at a snail’s pace, following four main plotlines/character sets.

Each is still in set-up mode even though this season is more than 60% over.

There is some nice landscape imagery, but the dialogue remains wooden, and character development far too basic. There are also an awful lot of far-fetched or pointless scenes.

If it were not branded as Tolkien, I doubt many would still be watching, and some of us are now nearing the hate-watching stage.

sounds like you need some binge watching to be more appreciative of today's "TV shows" ;)

Galadreil swimming back across the Atlantic, Orcs tunneling through the continent, and Elves with pointed ears is a bit of a stretch
(BTW spell check Galadreil and you get Gallbladder)

Watching this I don't have the baggage of the book readers, so yay me, but I've been enjoying this show quite a bit. Obviously it's not perfect but I'm very interested to see where it goes. Visually it's very beautiful, which is nice.
I'm enjoying it as well. Quite a bit more than House of the Dragon and I'm a big GoT fan.

I'm liking them both actually. I kept my expectations in check so as to not be too disappointed as both shows have a lot to live up to considering what's come before, especially with Hot D. Knowing some of the back story on both universes it's amazing somebody even wants to tackle these complex and often confusing lore.

Having read the Hobbit at age 8 and yesterday running around trying to find my 50th Anniversary edition (turns out my daughter had stolen it) you can say I'm a long time Tolkien fan. ROP is not Tolkien - how would the cools kids say it - it's Tolkien adjacent. And I don't have a problem with that - it's entertaining and my major complaint is that it's just too damn slow. But it creates an hour a week when I get to sit with my teenage son and watch something together before he return to his room and plugs back in to the matrix. And for that I'm grateful.

Okay, I'm calling out the first big "boo" from my POV. This whole "elves need mithril to avoid their life energy waning in Middle Earth" is the most fucked up thing I ever heard of. It's absolutely preposterous. Not enough to sink the series by itself, but a near fatal blow of writing idiocy.

If someone opened a casino based on some beloved classic Vegas venue from the 40s but used injection molded chips, metal folding chairs, and Walmart toppers on resin banquet tables for the poker room, we’d howl.
I have no interest in "Ring" films/books of any type (sorry, sue me), but ^this^ depiction had me in stitches. :ROFLMAO:

So. I was never great at reading, so my entire knowledge was based on the old Nick cartoon in the 80s.

Lord of the rings Tri - Fabulous. Completely enjoyed it.

Hobbit tri - it's alright. Can follow. Get the jist.

Rings of Power - what the fuck is this.... A French film?

RoP is as dull, poorly written, and produced as the Halo series was. Very little character development and at this point I wouldn't care what happens to the realm of man or elf. Did nobody introduce the harfoots to a hairbrush? Costume and set design on par with the Wizard of Oz. Fantastic for 1939 and the Lollipop Guild; not so much for 2022 and $1B budget.
And don't even get me started on the non-canonical Adar. Yeah I'm I hater of this absolute train wreck of a series. How can such a huge budget translate to the most boring series ever made?

FYI, next episode: i cant wait until i see how she survives the pyroclastic flow
(that is even a bit of a stretch even for me...)

Someone in my house wanted to watch the latest episode so I caved…. Gawdawful.

Setting aside all the stuff about how this has basically no basis in Tolkien lore and is an abomination to the original storyline, it is just boring. Add terrible editing, pacing, acting, etc., and the fact that the other two storylines (Elrond and Hobbits) just disappear for episodes at a time, seemingly, and it’s just awful.

A billion dollar mess.

As @BGinGA said, this is great. And, again, it is that bad.

I sort of enjoy this but just keep having to purposefully overlook stupid stuff.

Example 1 - The men and orcs are fighting. The elf soldier backs up into the only orc without a sword (?) who happens to be the only giant orc (?) so they can have a hand to hand fight. Why force this ridiculous fight into an otherwise good action scene?

Example 2 - Mt Doom erupts. Everyone runs away except Galadriel who poses face first into the erupting fire and ash. Why? Girl power? She's a psycho?

The plot lines are Ok with the exception of mithril needed to save elves souls. Again why? But it's mainly the accumulation of the smaller constant annoyances that could be so easily avoided that are just mentally wearing.

i was yelling at the tv that they should be checking that the mcguffin was the right mcguffin!

I thought this episode was quite entertaining. Each battle was an escalation on the previous.

The Mitheral story is likely a lie told by the King of the Elves for a undisclosed purpose. I am guessing that since the "One" ring needed to be thrown into the fire of mount doom that it may have been forged out of Mitheral. The Elf king is working with Sauron beguiled by the advisor who is building the great tower.....its been foreshadowed significantly at least.

Based on her bizarre behavior earlier in the episode, I’d say yes. (She basically articulates what sounds like a Hitlerian eliminationist plan coupled with a deep personal taste for sadism... so nasty that even the fallen elf is taken aback.)

This is at odds with Galadriel’s depiction in the LoTR books and movies. So I suspect they are setting up some sort of redemption or maturation narrative, where Galadriel “grows” out of her youthful impetuousness. I mean, she’s only several thousand years old at this stage, right?

I’d been watching Peaky Blinders and Andor lamenting that I’m tired of shows lazily using fascists as the bad guys.

Me during that Galadriel interrogation scene: “DONT MAKE THE FASCISTS THE GOOD GUYS!!!”

Yes, I found it hard to get past that scene.
I think it was over the top on the theme that the Elves (except her) were willing to let things go (with heads in the sand) until there is no choice (just like today's politicians).
Shove the fanatic Galdriel under the rug and forget until it is too late. No action until thousands die.
I doubt the has show has that much depth (& I thought that scene came acorss a bit racist/genocidal (albeit necessary but badly executed)).
Edit: could have been done better I guess (just driveled down to my good vs your evil)
