Hi everyone,

My main tournament set is going to be a base T500 and I’m likely going with the BGinA breakdown of 100 chips of each denom (400 total) to allow flexible starting stacks from 100K-200K (10/10/7/2 up to 10/10/7/6). But I’m also going to buy a few more T1K and T5K’s to allow a 6/12/12/x breakdown that I really want to try with my core group.

Our normal tournament is 4-5 hours but I also want to create a structure for a turbo. I’m thinking it should be 2-3 hours max? But I’m also wondering a few things:

1) Should starting stacks be deeper in a turbo? Should I really only use 200K starting stacks because blinds will jump so quickly? Or is that just the whole point of a turbo so it doesn’t really matter?
2) Because it’s a turbo and the T500 will leave the table so quickly, should I switch to a 6/12/12/x breakdown just to make my life easier? (Also just keeps more chips on the table which most love)
3) Any general thoughts on Turbo’s or recommendations?

Thanks!

6/12/12/x works better in theory (I have not run it, but it is how I will base my set when I get one). 2-3 hours is a hyper-turbo, and you probably want to start with 100K just to get it done in time.

12 minute levels
500/500
500/1000
500/1500
1000/2000
1500/3000
Color Up 500s
2K/4K
3K/6K
5K/10K
8K/16K
12K/24K
Color Up 1Ks
20K/40K
30K/60K (Estimated EOT with 9-12 buy-ins)
50K/100K
80K/160K
120K/240K

Ya that kind of makes sense as I see people talk about their 6-8 hour tournaments. Ours are definitely on the shorter end, but we also typically only have 4-7 people. It would make a difference if we had 8+ people, then playing for longer would make more sense.

And thanks for the other pieces of info! It’s where I’ll start and then adjust as needed.

6-12-12 is the sweet spot from my perspective.
Works for t500 and .50/1.00 cash sets alike.

I am looking for advice on how many chips I should add to my 400 piece T500 set as I expand from a single table to about 16-17 players (max would be 18).

I had great luck running with @BGinGA’s structure 10/10/7/3 with 125K starting stacks (T500/T1000/T5000/T25000 —current chip inventory is 100 of each denomination and am hosting about 16 people later this month).

My family CFO AKA “Wife” is capping what I allocate to this tournament project so am trying to be strategic of what chips I add on.

Thinking of adding 75 T500, 75 T1000, 50 T5000, and 25 T100,000.

Any feedback or suggestions are welcome!

Do you have sufficient room for 18 people? Ie enough proper chairs and table space? I would determine that first before the amount of chips. While it's nice to have as many people as possible, if you are on the edge of having 18 people, sometimes it's nicer to guarantee you have two full tables of 8, rather than *possibly* having 17 or 18 people, if you can get that many. Also, selfishly as the host, 16 people is slightly easier to put together and manage the day of the tournament.

From there I would prioritize making exact amounts for the number of people you choose. If you go with 175 T500's then you will always have 2500 worth of T500 left over that isn't really useful in any way. So I would decide on 16-18 people and then have the appropriate 160/170/180 of the T500 and T1000's.

If you go with 16 people for example, I'd probably do something like below for 10/10/7/3:

T500 - 160
T1000 - 160
T5000 - 160
T25,000 - 100
T100,000 - 20
Total - 600 chips

This gives you the 16 buy-ins and the extra 48 T5000 chips could be used as an "on-time/exact change bonus" where you can give 3/each (15,000) to those compliant folks to give them a 12% bonus to their starting stacks. Then the remaining 52 T25,000 chips gives you 8 rebuys (50% is probably a slightly above an average amount of rebuys) and colour up chips for the T500/T1000. Finally, the T100,000's give you about 10 extra rebuys if it's a crazy tournament and also the ability to fully colour up the T5000's, depending on your blinds and how long the tournament goes.

Let me know how the tournament goes regardless, have fun!!

Thank you for the great advice and 16 is really where I am comfortable with table space. I have an 8 seater and 10 seater table along with chairs— but that’s really packing people in.

Thank you very much!
