Hello

I'm looking to run a 6max Sit n Go with existing chips to test the tournament waters with my cash game group. I'd like to tournament to take 2 hours so that there is time for cash after.

If it is successful I will pick up a new tourney set but right now if have:

100x T5
100x T25
100x T100

1k Starting stack, 15/13/6.

I would probably allow a rebuy for 1hr to keep things social.

Structure as follows:

I believe the 100/200 level should be the end point as that equals 5% of the 6k chips in play. I've chosen 15 min levels with 33-50% increases to keep things simple for new tournament players. Obviously the jump from L4-5 is slightly more but it allows for a colour up and rebuys come in with 20BB.

Any thoughts?

Why not, just go for it!
But a 2 hour 6-handed tourney with a rebuy is very close to a cash game at the end.

The idea is to introduce a tournament format before committing to a whole evening and/or a new chipset

I could remove the rebuy but I don't like the idea of someone doing nothing for over an hour if they get coolered

And this is why you/we play cash game!
But a good way to get into tourney mode, imo.

It‘s more effort for the host to run a tourney than a cash game.

MTT are cool, but definately needs a set for itself

A T5-base 6-player tournament with T1000 starting stacks (15/13/6) and 5/10 opening blinds (100bb) that lasts just two hours total with re-buys is a very tall order. In fact, your proposed format even with no re-buys will last up to 10 levels (150/300) or 2.5 hours plus the color-up break. Allowing re-buys will likely push the total time required close to 3 hours.

I understand wanting to "test the water" before committing to a full-blown tourney night, but the fact is that a super-quick 2-hour turbo event bears little resemblence to a well-structured semi-deep or deep tournament. Players that might love the latter may very well hate the former so much they never give a 'full tournament experience' a try. So in reality, it's not nearly as much of a valid 'test' as you might hope or expect.

I recommend that you hold the cash game first, followed by a slightly deeper --and slightly longer- tournament afterwards. Players can optionally leave when they are eliminated, so no one has to sit around unless they actually choose to do so.

Increase the starting stack size to T1300 (15/13/9, 130bb), and add a 200/400 level to the end of your proposed structure. With no re-buys (and none really needed), it should finish in under 3 hours, and provide a more accurate representation of what they would likely see in a future event.

How about 12 minute levels with no rebuys, coming in at around 2 hours?

We only have about 4 hours of play for our poker evenings, perhaps we could start with cash then a 2hr turbo where people could leave as they get knocked out?

Anything under 15 minutes is going to feel rushed, even 6-handed. But it's probably your best option with a 4-hour window. And yeah, doing an abbreviated 1:50 cash session first is the way to go, maximizing everybody's play time and minimizing their downtime.
