Hi folks, trying to get involved in this quirky subculture.

I'm signing up to try and level up my home game. I am short on chips and knowledge - I'll take all the unsolicited advice you've got!

Throw us a bone, here. What would you like to know?

Welcome! Nice people here.
To cut to the chase I am looking to get a versatile set up of chips that I can play casual home games (non - tournament at this juncture).

I am looking for advice about how best to do this for the long term. I understand the value of investing in high quality stuff and this is kinda how I see getting chips:

Either I can 1) get a super cheap set of dice chips, play poker with my friends and either progress into the hobby and invest more or it stays a casual thing and I am happy with my cheap chips.

OR

2) I can invest some money upfront into chips that will hold their value + last a lifetime and either expand my collection or be able to sell it if I find its not for me / can't keep the traction with my friends that want to play now.

I really want to avoid hitting the middle ground of purchasing the mid tier chips and realizing I want nicer ones or moving on from playing cards and finding out those chips aren't worth anything on the second hand market.

I hope this is clear, I'll take any and all advice (buy samples)

So, just my $.02 worth... skip the dice chips or lead slug website chips completely. Maybe start with an inexpensive set of China clays from a group buy to hold you over. Then use those while you build a nice set of real chips since that seems to be your long term goal. There will still be a market down the road for your China clay set, while your dice chips will only be wanted by your local donation center.

Check this thread for the current group buy.

Thread 'CHIPS* GROUP BUY*: New Greek Mold * Cards Mold * Textured No-Mold * 02/2024' https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...d-cards-mold-textured-no-mold-02-2024.114431/

You can get some samples from @justincarothers or other members here to see what these are about, but they are better than any other cheap options. And there is pretty much a group buy every month, so you don't have to get in on this month's if you don't want to rush...

Welcome from SoCal...

I know this is sacrilegious on PCF, but I would first invest in your table and chair set up if you don’t already have them.
Along with better chips make sure you get some good quality plastic cards
Whatever money you have left spend on chips.
Lots of good break downs on the site for cash games. A 600 chip breakdown seems to be a sweet spot.

Good luck !

Buy then all fast if they fit your budget. Sell the ones u don’t want. My interest changed, just like most hearts over time so MOAR is better, unless you paid too much for a flippers pretty colors you will usually get most if not all your money back. It’s like a free rental if you played your hand right.

Store in cool dry dark place.

Also always search local Craigslist and marketplaces for good chips, then bring the chips here. Nothing but love for chip harvesters, esp from civilians/casinos.

I found these on marketplace, they were in a bucket, they are out there! Happy hunting.
