I've really only hosted cash games and don't play in too many tournament. If I were to have a 10 person $100 buy in tourney, do you only get $100 in chips or do you have a set amount for a starting stack? Say $100 gets you $1k in tourney chips?

When it comes to tournaments, the absolute dollar amount of what you get in chips doesn't need to match the buy in.

Your buy in could be $10 per player but each person may get 30,000 in tournament chips. Alot of it depends on the structure and how many big blinds you'd like each player to start with. 100 BB is fairly standard. I personally prefer deepstacked (200+ BB)freezeout tournaments with slower structures. Have been leaning towards rebuy tournaments lately though, crowd dependant.

5/25/100/500 if your players are used to online tourneys

25/100/500/1000/5000 if they want more of a live tourney/WSOP structure.

The WSOP now starts with T-30,000 at the 50/100 level, which is 300 BB

For our tournaments, we use:
-> 12k starting stack for a $15 buy-in, and players can rebuy once for $15.
-> Starting blind level is 25/50, so the starting stack is 240 bb.
-> 25/100/500/1000/5000 denoms
-> Starting stacks of 12/12/9/6

Seems to work well.

No, buy in and stack size don't have to match. Depending on what the blind will be should dictate starting stack size. Like if you were gonna start with 5/10 blinds and work your way up a 1k stack might work well. Were if you were gonna start at 25/50 then 2500 and up would be better.

Traditionally the tourney poker game I host each month has been with a 2k to 2500 starting stack with 5/10 blinds but since getting my new chip sets we'll be starting with 5k chip stacks with 10/20 blinds. Our buyin is usually 20 dollars with a 5 dollar bounty. We allow rebuys within the first hour for the full amount.

Blind Valet is a good place to mess around with your starting stacks and blind structure.

I also like a 2000 starting stack with 5/10 blinds to begin with. Usually finishes after 3.5 hours.

You will all think my groups crazy then. We start with 300,000 in tournament chips with doubling the blind every 15 mins unless the blind can be rounded to a even number. Example- blinds that are 25/50 50/100 100/200 200/400 400/800 500/1000 1000/2000 2000/4000 4000/8000 5000/10000 Thats why my last big set I got made had so many demons that were huge (25k 100k 250k 500k)

Tonight I'm organising a tournament which is completely at the other end of the spectrum. In order to use my Terrible's chips for the first time (1/5/25/100) it's going to be a T400 tournament. Only 7 players so starting stacks of 15 x $1, 17 x $5, 4 x $25 and 2 x $100 = 38 chips each.

15 minute levels, blinds as below, should last 3.5 hours again unless the players can't adjust to the smaller value chips!

Rebuy or freezout?

Freezeout. It actually lasted closer to 4 hours but I think that was down to some slow play on our part.
