Tourney Starting Stack ?: T100 / 20K / 18 Players (7 Viewers)

Hi,

With this structure, I typically have 8 rebuys on average so 26 total buy ins (rebuys open for 2 hours). I have run my starting stack a certain way for a while but have heard many suggest a different structure. The only difference is the 1K vs. 5K allocation. Looking for opinions if one is better than another or if they are very close in the end.

Personally I would prefer #2 over #1, early change making and rebuying with 5ks will be easier. Either should work though.

Typically I do just give out (4) 5Ks for rebuys. Do you suggest that as well or normal starting stack.

Four 5ks is good, but that would lean me even more to #2. With #1 I might include 5x T1k for some of the rebuys.

I second this.

You need the least amount of 500 chips in a tourney. There is no bet where you need more than one (1) 500 chip.

Bet 800? That's one (1) 500 and three (3) hundos.

Bet 12,700? That's two (2) 5Ks, two (2) 1Ks, one (1) 500, and two (2) hundos.

So I would highly recommend doing 10/4/7/2. Once the 1K chip becomes the workhorse, you'll be glad you have more of them, and less of the unnecessary 500s.

Oh yea I agree the T500 is a very annoying chip not used that much. The main difference is going with 2 T5000 or just 1 and adding more 1Ks to starting stack. I think both can work for sure though.

Sorry for hijacking this and I know it isn't relevant to your question but this response and many other reasons is why I believe T500 base tourneys are GOATed. You are forced to use the 500's in the beginning, but they only last on the table for 1-2 hours (depending on the tournament). And since not many are needed you aren't taking away 1/3 of the starting stack chips in the first colour up.

I do the latter as well. I do 25k starting.
12 x 25
12 x 100
7 x 500
10 x 1k
2 x 5k

This format makes making change a breeze. The 1ks are the workhorse for much of the tournament so it makes sense to increase them. Also my players like having a shitload of chips.

For beginners I started doing early play as well bringing in T5s for an hour.

Frank, what are your constraints / other values?

Is more chips on the table a desireable or undesireable feature?

Is having to carry them to the venue an issue?

Is availability of chips/cost of chips a factor?

Do your players know how to color up (the rich man buys as many as possible, the remainder get rounded or raced)?

Do you have time to arrange them or must they come pre-stacked and ready to go?

Is your player pool experienced enough to know how to make change?

Any Antes?

Both are working but if you can afford #2, go with it. 11 x 1000 in a starting stack of a T100 based tournament is perfect.

I agree. I run everything myself pretty professionally and the 1K chip is the workhorse so I think I still prefer starting with 11 of 1K.

I have rebuys for 2 hours which I only give 5K for. I handle all the coloring up and such. At the very end there might be a bit to many 1K chips but it’s not a big Issue at all and you could always change out some 1K at the end if there are to many.

The T500 are colored up towards the end at that point. Plus I have a brand new RAT set and why not have some extra 1K towards the end when they are absolutely beautiful to look at.

I use T25k to color-up the T1K (sometimes required a lot of rebuys happened) or just to replace some T1K if too many.

Question, inquiry & comment.

Our tournaments normally have close to +/-20 players and last 4.5-5 hours. The structure seems to work really well but, an adjustment to starting stacks feels needed. Longer levels at the beginning allows more play and shorter late levels get us out the door as the cream rises.

Tournament basics

T100, 20k starting stack, 1k early reg. bonus, 3 x 5k addon. Optional $5 bounty.

100/200 25 min. levels

We "currently" do a T100 20k starting stack of:

10/2/3/3

The first 4 levels the 100 is the workhorse, the remaining levels the 1k & 5k become the workhorse.

I suggest 15/5/11/1 starting stacks

Im currently printing some custom racks and hope to try new stack sizing in a couple weeks. We've used the old stack size for years because it conveniently (18 chips) fits in a rack.

I use 10/6/11/1. This is for sure my favorite after trying a few other formats. You don’t typically need more than 10 x T100 per person.

Less T100 to color up as well.
