Our game has evolved / converted to the beautiful truth of mixed games, and now we pretty much exclusively play those over NLHE. We mostly play cash with a few tournaments a year, and so we are looking at making our next tournament all mixed games.

First, for anyone that runs mixed game tournaments, I’d love to hear about your structure. Are you changing games on orbit, on level? Do you adjust level timing since mixed games usually take longer to resolve than Hold ‘Em hands? Have you ever successfully mixed limit and pot limit betting within the same tournament?

And then I am wondering about how split pot games play when you get to the final two. Does it become a real slog in heads up? My worry is a long chop fest until variance strikes and someone gets a very key scoop. Is there any merit to just ending and paying the final 2 rather than playing it out? Do you just remove split pot games from the rotation? Or is this just a totally overblown concern?

Thanks for any guidance y’all give!

We've done a wide variety of mixed-game tournaments.

If the mix of games all play similarly, we change games per timed levels but typically use longer levels than NLHE (25+ minutes). For events with a mix of games that take vastly different amounts of time to play, we've found that changing games per orbit(s) works best (change per one orbit for 7-9 players, per two orbits for 4-6 players, per three orbits for 2-3 players), with the blinds still increasing on a timed basis.

Heads-up, split-pot games can really prolong an event. If possible, eliminating them from the final two can save a lot of time.

And lastly, we run a HORS tourney that is alternating levels of no-limit Hold'Em, pot-limit Omaha Hi/Lo, fixed-limit Razz, and fixed-limit Stud Hi/Lo. Levels are timed, but the split-pot games are played for two levels each to help balance out the number of hands played, and the fixed-limit games are played starting at 3x the previous BB level:

L1 NLHE 50/100 blinds, 25 ante
L2 PLO8 75/150 blinds 25 ante
L3 PLO8 100/200 blinds 50 ante
L4 Razz 300/600 bets, 75 ante, 150 bring-in
L5 Stud8 400/800 bets, 100 ante, 200 bring-in
L6 Stud8 600/1200 bets, 150 ante, 300 bring-in
L7 NLHE 200/400 blinds, 100 ante
L8 PLO8 300/600 blinds, 150 ante
L9 PLO8 400/800 blinds, 200 ante
L10 Razz 1200/2400 bets, 300 ante, 600 bring-in
L11 Stud8 1500/3000 bets, 400 ante, 800 bring-in
L12 Stud8 2000/4000 bets, 500 ante 1000 bring-in
L13 NLHE 800/1600 blinds, 400 ante
etc.
Once heads-up, play reverts to NLHE only.

Thank you, this is awesome, and gives us a lot to work with and think about. Very much appreciate all the detail!
