So, where do you start...? (1 Viewer)

Here's a super small sample size of some of J5's inlay work

Is it possible to walk into at casino, let's say in Vegas, and buy som of their worn out or old chips? Like old tourney chips?

Nope. Especially in Vegas, their gaming commission doesn't allow this, even if the casino is closed down. Some states allow their casinos to sell off assets, including old chips. This is where the majority of the casino set ps out there have come from. A chip broker (namely Jim from the Chip Room) buys these in bulk and sells them off to the masses, us.

All righty then. I guess I'll be looking into that. Thanks :)

I love those Boulevard chips, and the Colony Club! They're all fantastic but these two are my favourites.

I'm trying to get hold of Milano samples, but shipping to the UK is about £50 from most sellers on eBay. There seems to be a real lack of options in the UK market.

I don't know if it would save you any loot. You could order them and have them shipped to me. Then I could reship them to you. You could pay me via paypal.

First you need to look up shipping and see if that would save you any money.

Thank you, that's a very kind offer. I will look into that. I found another seller on Amazon selling in the uk for £68 for 25 chips, which works out about £2.72 per chip, or $3.95 EACH in USD.

Supply and demand 101

Okay I've done a bit more research. I can get a 500pc Milano set for $180 and only $20 shipping to the UK. There will probably be another $40 on top for customs. I don't know how to circumvent this unless I fly over and collect them :)

Hi guys.

I'm new to the forum. I've been playing poker on and off for about 10 years, but usually online and some casino tournaments. However, a group of work colleagues have just starting playing a few home games and it looks like this could become a regular thing.

However, we don't have any chips between us (we've begged and borrowed thus far).

I thought it'd be as simple as Googling poker chip set and picking up something that looked cool to play with. Then I found this site and things took a turn... Like most things, when I see that there's a 'better option' I usually go for that. I never knew chips were so complex. I've read on the different types of material used, ways of stamping and creating chips, custom or ready made. It's a mine field.

So, in lieu of a 'poker chip 101' thread (that I can find), where do I start!? I'm from the UK, we're about to start £0.25 / £0.50 cash games (moved from tourney as we prefer the cash game format) and I cannot find any cash game sets over here. Not for these starting values anyway.

Does anyone have any advice, hints or tips for me?

Many thanks,
Adam

As I am in somewhat the same situation as you, I looked around and found these videos on YouTube. Worth a look. I learned a lot, since I've been away from the chip scene for quite some time. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPRzyNqP4xv9AoySSqzQQcs0zMKV6OcSR

Hey Adam,

Where did you end up getting you are you getting your Milano's from? I have been having the same issues (getting chips to the UK). Got samples for Milanos, Majestics and a few ceramics. Unsure what to pick though.

I've still not decided. Lack of affordable sample and indecision as to which chip type I want.

There are too many options. I need a cash and tournament set. But I cannot decide.

Where did you get your samples?

I used https://www.apachepokerchips.com/ they were pretty quick to deliver (less than a week). I paid $23 for the delivery (for 4 sample sets), which isn't too bad considering other prices I have seen elsewhere.

Where did you see the Milano deal?

It was on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/750-Piece...901619?hash=item3f3d26eff3:g:YngAAOSwq7JUGIF~

Cheap delivery. The only thing that puts me off the Milano is that brown 25¢ chip. Since my cash games are usually low value I wouldn't want a lot of those in play.

Yeah I know what you mean, I am in the same position. the Majestic poker set has a better colour for the 25¢ chip. But not sure how I feel about the them over the milanos. Tough decisions lol - ideally I want to get 1 ceramic set and one china clay set - not sure if my wife will agree to that or not though. :(

I got two sample sets from Apache, pharaoh and majestic. The pharaoh's 25 and 5000 chip were so similar in colour that they were ruled out. The majestics were very nice, until I got the sample set from key west... Now that's a good clay chip! But oh so expensive. Especially when getting 750-1000 of them. I also got a sample set from buypokerchips.com, the Venerati ceramic. Surprisingly nice chips for $0,39 pr piece. Compared to my Chipcos, they were no match of course, but at almost one third of the price... So I am now considering getting a more reasonable set, majestic and Venerati-priced. The key wests are to expensive for me I'm afraid, Chipcos (archetype eg.) are also to much. My pick is the Venerati ceramic because they feel like real ceramics. The majestics just didn't feel like real clay chips in my opinion.

Let me know if anyone in the UK wants to try a few of the Milanos. I have a set for sale but might be able to sell off an odd extra chip here or there. Full tournament set still available!

Key Wests are great looking chips, but depending on how much over your budget they are, you can get your own customs direct from CPC for cheaper on a different mold, H molds are now one of the more expensive ones I think (If I've got it right, the price is based on how cost efficient each mold is when making the chips).

ohh man, this forum is dangerous. I was only considering stock china clays (milanos or majestics) as my main set and possibly 1 ceramic set (ept or tiki kings). But now I thinking to add on CPC at some stage - 3 sets should be ok right! Lol

you go through the same path as me ... (I live in Russia)
1 delivery from the United States is expensive, but no other choice ...
just reconciled with this fact.
2 buy samples and you will understand what you want. (Apache, in this sense, works well. Shipping is not so expensive)
You will know exactly what you need to look.
3, you also forget about one key point ..
buying an expensive set of "high clay" (not China .. although they are good too ..), you will be able to sell it without losing anything.
(with a probability of 100%, you will seek to purchase clay chips Paulson or CPC. :) )
4 @RainmanTrail misses a couple of points.
- high-end chips are not always are expensive ($ 2-10 / chip). Patrol eBay and sooner or later you will find them.
- there is also Jim, which arranges luxury sales. :)
Sometimes they last for a minute ... you need to be prepared ...
- new home chips is nice ... but there is no other way to get it except how to buy the old casino chips.

I'm not saying about such things as varying degrees of protection for the chip. which are made specially. Alpha-dots, grade clay and inlays that glow under UV-light, bronze flakes and silver/aluminum plates ...
these chips will be shine like a Christmas tree  :whistling:

Also try premier poker chips they are in the U.K and also very helpful

Howsey, did you just pick up those chips in your avatar? I just missed out on some recently, cracking chips!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I am also from the UK and in a very similar situation myself.

How did it all pan out?

I really like the CPS tournament chips, however waiting for a shipping quote and worried about import charges too. A cash set would also be brilliant, and my preference would be 25p/£1 and £5 chips.

Hey! Welcome! In the end I bought chips from someone on here. Have a look in the classifieds. I know @MillyS bought some from America so can help with costs and things.

Where in the UK are you?

Yeah i've had a look, and imagine I'll have to keep an eye on the classifieds to see if anything comes up that can be shipped to the UK.

What did you get from the classifieds if you dont mind me asking?

I'm based up in Reading!

Hi and welcome!

Always good to see new UK members.

I ordered 700 majestic chips from Apache. Spent $90 on shipping and approx £55 on customs charges. Was it worth it? Yeah the chips are good. Unfortunately we will always get shafted with customs.
