Need some help...

Recently had to move farther away (not by much, but still) so I wanted to make poker night a little more worth everyone's while. We usually just played cash, so I was thinking about have a single table turbo to kick off the night... Tourney noob questions below...

  • How long should I budget time? 2 hours?
  • Allow rebuys? Or would having a turbo defeat the purpose?
  • Blind structure and timing?
  • For a single table tourney, best chip set up? Was thinking of getting a small royals set.

Bump

Also just bought this STT set, 2k starting stacks, smallest denom is 5

Back when I did turbos we started with 3k stacks, 12/12/3, the blind levels where 12 minutes and the levels where:

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
- color off T25, but no break -
200/400
300/600
400/800
600/1200 usually ended here
800/1600 or here

We only needed T25, T100, and T500.

My 2 cents

Excellent breakdown, @Mr Winberg . Turbos are hard to pull off, but this one still has a 60BB starting stack. 12 minute orbits are tight if more than 6 handed. The risk that the deal won't get around the table.

But honestly if you play cash, just play cash :).

Good suggestion, how long did they usually last?

Good point. I was trying to mix it up a little. Might try it out and see how it goes. If it sucks, back to cash only lol

My turbo structure

Starting stack : T5000
Assuming 10 players

25-50
25-75
50-100
75-150
100-200
150-300
// color-up 25
200-400
300-600
400-800
600-1200
800-1600
// color-up 100
1000-2000
1500-3000 // should end here or in level before 10 handed freezeout

12 levels of play.
Make 15' levels and you are good with 3 hours of play
Just make sure you play with 2 decks because 15' levels is quite short.

Well he indicated 10 levels * 12 minutes so about 2 hours.

Right, tournaments eliminate players by design. Some players are going to be busted an hour before it ends.

I think we need to define terms, but 3 hours doesn't seem like a "turbo" to me. (But granted, it's a matter of perspective.) When I think turbo, I think 60-90 mins. But that is tough to structure.

My suggestion to fit that would be 8 players, T2000 stack (12/12/1 of T25/100/500) starting at 25-50 (40BB start)

16 minute levels.
25-50
25-75
50-100,
75-150,
(Expected end during previous or next level, 0h48 - 1h20 elapsed)
100-200

Additional levels if necessary (should be rare)

150-300
200-400
(still under 1h52.)

In other words, the best way to ensure a quick end is to skip the "deep stack" portion and get a stack depth (40BB) that simulates the mid game. You could do rebuys, but that would add to the tournament. I would only permit that for 1-2 levels tops.

Yeah, I agree, and we were 10 players! We played this way during the poker boom to get 2-3 tourneys in per night. I don't do turbos any more...

Someone did the math for you ;) :
Well he indicated 10 levels * 12 minutes so about 2 hours.

Some good advice here:
Just make sure you play with 2 decks
Always true, and even more so for turbos!

This would fit perfectly, since I cap our games at 8 people and have a STT set that allows for 2000 starting stacks.

The 2nd level says 25-75, is that a typo or intentional?

Also how do you normally do the prize pool with this?

Intentional. The small blind and big blind don't always have to be 1:2, increasing the big blind to 75 instead of 100 makes it so there is a step between the average stack being 40BB to 20BB.

A lot of suggested structures on PCF work like this to avoid that "early double."

If 3 hours is too long, you can trick it like this :

Starting stack = 2500
Add level 25-25 to my structure
With 8 players it shall end at level at level 400-800 or 600-1200

This means 10 or 11 levels of play.
15' levels --> 2:30 to 2:45 of play max
12' levels --> 2:00 to 2:12 of play max
