Savage just tweeted these reopening details from the Wynn... (1 Viewer)

TL;DR version, stagger open tables, limit seating based on guidance, sanitize everything whenever a person comes or goes.

Bad news, no information on how to sanitize chips. :(.

Just provide disposable gloves and require their use. Touching chips, cards, etc. problem solved.

I read about this the other day, and the context in which I understood this was that no one, politicians or other businesses, were really putting together a "get back to business" plan. This wasn't necessarily a plan that they absolutely were going to put into action, but was Wynn's attempt to push other casinos and pressure politicians or give them the tools necessary to convince the public it would be safe to reopen under certain conditions.

From what I understand gloves spread disease even worse. Mainly because it's easier to wash hands than gloves. For gloves to be effective they would have to be thrown away after every touch. Really have to figure out how to sanitize things.

Yeah I don't get the whole gloves thing
The idea is to use gloves when touching things that might be infected (door handles, shopping carts, chips, etc.) while not touching your face or any other part of your body, and then removing them without allowing the outer portion of the glove to touch any part of your body (including the inside of the other glove), and then immediately washing your hands, wrists, etc. Easy to do? No. More effective than thorough hand washing? Debatable, but probably makes poor hand washing techniques less problematic, because there is less likelihood of your entire hand being contaminated.

Alright, let's move up to a laboratory isolator glovebox over each poker table (with replaceable gloves for every user). That aught to do the trick! No one touches anything!!! Good for home use, too!

A good solution would be to have each player in a different room, playing with a small screen or app on their phone and the dealer touching the cards, alone, in the poker room

I was actually thinking about this the other day. Having a real dealer would build more confidence in players. Live blackjack is available but I haven't seen poker being dealt this way.

You shouldn't. The glove thing is stupid. Infected people don't ooze virus out of their fingers. They breath it out. And uninfected people can't catch it by touching the virus with their fingers. Maybe if you have open wounds on your hands and somebody sneezes on them? I dunno.
Unless the presence of gloves on your hands somehow reminds you not to touch your face, they're pretty much useless.

The report from Wynn says chip sanitation is being reviewed by experts. I am picturing a back room full of PCF'ers running ultrasonic's 24hrs a day. Obviously being paid for the service in Wynn tourney chips.

I've got a mid-June and a July trip planned (fully refundable obviously)...I think Wynn is pretty ambitious with mid-May though.
IMO mid-June will only see pools, restaurants, and slots open. Nightclubs, day clubs, and anything involving chips will be at least mid-summer.

I guess I don’t really care what precautions casinos are taking. Ultimately, it’s up to ME to avoid it. I guess that means assuming it’s all around me and acting accordingly.
I can’t imagine playing cards with a table full of mask-wearers, that that’s probably what it will be.

It may sound crass of me to say, but once I one day host a game at home again, I am going to mandate that everyone wear masks until we're at a reasonable point where it won't be necessary. Where I am, most essential businesses and restaurants that are open aren't allowing anyone in without a face mask.

Gloves are essentially useless. If you're wearing a mask, the respiratory droplets won't get on your hands. Just wash them before and after you start playing.

No food or drink at the table is for the best for the time being. If someone wants a snack or a drink, you have to wash your hands before touching chips or cards again. Maybe if it's a tournament, allow eating or drinking only at break times and maybe take breaks after every two levels or so? I don't know, I'm thinking too much into it now.

It's doable when we get the go ahead from the reputable sources, but it won't be the same for a long time.

You had me until no drinking.
I’ll see you after we’re vaccinated, I guess

No problem with drinking, if you have one of those drink container hemets with the hose going to your mouth. Just keep your mask on.

You could probably modify one to acommodate gravity-fed snacks, too.

What if I made a shot of tequila compulsory after every two levels of tournament play?

Would make for some interesting later levels.

Yeah, I think this may be the way to go if hosting a game anytime soon. Hopefully the mask part won't last too long. That would suck. But I think washing hands before playing, and then washing hands or sanitizing whenever you return to the table may be around for a while.

I am hoping to host in late-may/early-june. I think we are going to be past the peak infections by then, but obviously it's a situation worth monitoring.

Here are some of my early thoughts:

I think temperature screening is applicable. I have a temporal scan thermometer. I would tend to trust players to self monitor, but if everyone is more comfortable with on the spot monitoring, then so be it.

I think sanitization is applicable. I am thinking about having wipes laid over the rail at every seat and asking players to touch their hands to the wipes before handling chips. Assuming these wipes are in supply by then, they could be changed out every 60 minutes.

I think I will get some more setups so I can rotate through decks every 60 minutes, make sure they all get wiped down back and front every night before putting them away. (Or just dollar store paper cards for now so they can go right to the trash.)

I would consider masks too if that's what players want to do.

Just some early thoughts.

My crew in NC is all over me to start hosting our weekly tournaments again but no way in hell am I doing this for the foreseeable future. I don’t think I’ll host a game till mid-2021 if I had to guess, but there are no casinos there except Cherokee and that’s a 2-3 hour drive (and not an easy one). We all miss live poker but let’s be smart - it’s a breeding ground for spreading viruses.

Of course, "immunes" can resume play immediately! There are more every day and with accurate testing, you might even discover that you are one yourself.

Non-immune? Mid-2021 seems about right to me.

I am going to keep an eye on what casinos are doing. It seems to me if you can enforce hand sanitation and catch the most common symptom (fever) it really goes a long way.

It's not going to be this black and white. We still don't know enough about immunity to the virus. How long does the immunity hold? It usually depends on the rate at which the virus is mutating, which by early indications seems to be that it is mutating slower than other viruses. This bodes well for a vaccine, but how long will it take before the virus mutates and starts making those with antibodies and the vaccine sick?
