Samples have arrived! Thoughts and Questions (1 Viewer)

Hi All

I have received samples of the following chips recently in my hunt for a new chipset:

CPC Atlantics
Apache Taj Mahals Ceramics
Pharaohs Club CC

I currently own a version of Casino Royale/Montecarlo cash set and a Dunes Commemorative Nexgen Tourney set.

First up are the Apache cards mold Taj's the same as the Broken Arrow GB?
-I personally feel that the printing on these seems very "visible'. The inlay area looks a bit low res to me and the colour is a bit faded inside the card molds.

Pharaohs
-Love the look/feel of these, front runner new tourney set; I hate the 500s though. Unfortunately Apache aren't that forthcoming with UK shipping and the 1ks are out of stock for a while.

CPC
-Underwhelmed by the 'best'. The chips I received are really chalky and almost all of the edges are scratched. I also don't like the feel of shuffling them and actually prefer the china clays.
-I love the crisp edges and molds though.


I think a GB is the front runner for a new cash set. I'm taken by the binions design perhaps on a web mold/sticker inlay. How would these compare to the Taj's that I recieved?

Don’t wanna argue with an opinion but that’s a somewhat unfair assessment. With CPC you receive an unfinished/raw product. No one likes shuffling brand new clay chips. They desperatly need oil and a nice breaking in, before they start to shine

CPC chips look and feel better after a little love. Clean and light mineral oil will make them shine. I didn’t like the feel of mine when I ordered them at first, but after a few rounds of playing they break in

Re tht CPC chips, the chalky feel is probably from the factory dust, which is common for brand new clay chips. I wiped my new customs with a damp cloth to remove the dust and then oiled the rolling edges.

The thing about ceramics and China clays is that when they’re new, that’s the best they’ll ever feel.
With CPCs, when new, that’s the worst they’ll ever feel.

CC - The green colour is quite messy

Are these common issues?

The "fuzzy" edges on the CPC are standard when straight from the factory. A slight touch of mineral oil and a bit of use will make that go away. I don't see what you mean by "color rubbed off". The pigment is in the clay and won't come off of the chip. Maybe just the factory dust which is also common when fresh from the factory.

Ragged edges on CPC are the strengthening fibres sticking out. They apparently wear off. Colour rubbing off is likely chalky dust. Gotta clean that chalk dust off, then after oiling... CPCs forever!

I am 100% looking forward to my next web mold set, however, I have played with many broken in and brand new CPC sets and would rather have those for my next custom set if money was no question.

I had both. Both Pharaohs and CPC. It's impossible to compare them directly... Just play with them for a while and you'll understand everything yourself.

I can certainly see the appeal of the CPC but i really cannot see myself cleaning and oiling poker chips (i'm happy to look after other 'nice' things in my life though). They're also a magnitude more expensive than the web molds which i'm just awaiting samples for.

1) None of us ever did… until we did

2) It’s not something you need to do very often. If you’re hosting 1-2 games per month you can probably get away with doing this once every 3-5 years

Oiling is an easy process and really does enhance a CPC chip, especially on the edges.

Cleaning straight from the factory is noting more than rinsing off the manufacturing dust. It's definitely not a deep clean or arduous process.


A magnitude more expensive for sure, but a very different feel and experience than the web molds. Both are great chips, but it's like comparing a Honda Civic to a Ferrari or Rolls Royce. Both will take you to work and the store, but the end experience is also commensurate.
