Has anyone else ever thought about how running a club is similar to running a business.

If you are good at one you would likely be good at another.

Hosting/Club Managing business similarities:
- Defining ideal customer
- Customer growth and retention
- Data management
- Marketing
- Finance operations
- Materials management

Has anyone else ever thought about this, or is it just me?

Errrr . . . a raked poker game is a business.

That being said, being a great home repair contractor doesn't qualify you to run a poker room any more than it qualifies you to run a law firm -=- DrStrange

Isn't it a business anyway? Non-Profit is still a business.
No such thing as a non-profit if you consider YOY retained earnings.

I hope nobody here is involved with a club that has retained earnings. Maybe an ideal club is not a for-profit or non-profit at all.

my business would be 15k under the break even point just for supplies and equipment. All that for one open day a month. More like a labor of love than a business.

Well, consider the aggregate of your winnings over time and that could be considered your revenue.

The one thing that's missing is also the one thing that sinks most small businesses: making a meaningful profit.
Most folks can squeak out something approximating minimum wage.

But visualizing a gap in the market, then effectively scaling it in order to make significantly more money than a decent salaried 9-to-5 would?

Hard as shit, and very very few ever even come close.

Most of my poker winnings come from when I play somewhere other than my house. If I were to measure wins at my house cumulatively would be wayyyy less than my investment.

I don’t host just to take my friends money, we have all learned the game and study it because of our very competitive nature. It’s fun.
