My wife and I are looking at retirement destinations. Right now, our top two choices are North Carolina and Virginia.

North Carolina has a lot to offer, but the poker seems limited. Cherokee casino and not much else I can see. Is anyone aware of good games in the area?

Obviously Florida is an option and has plenty of poker, but we’ve eliminated it for other reasons. Certainly open to other suggestions.

Greece.
Possibly lazy and/or corrupt public clerks are a lot more accommodating to foreigners (the ages-old tradition of hospitality).
Crime rates are pretty low by any western nation's standards.
Excellent climate; earthquakes present though.
Impolite but un-hypocritical and genuinely kind people.
Not a place to earn any money, but the ideal place to spend money, IMHO.
I would retire here even if I were not Greek.

Buffalo NY. Relatively low for property prices. Poker in Niagara Falls and only a half hour from the Canadian border. And when winter hits we are ready (sorry Texas).

The way I see it, everywhere you go there are natural disasters. There are earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes. All of those you have to EVACUATE to safety. Here in Buffalo, we get blizzards. For blizzards for don't evacuate, you STAY HOME. Hell we even had a mayor come on tv to tell us, and I quote, "buy a six pack of beer and stay home". I like buying beer and staying home better than boarding up my house and running away. Think about it man.

But it’s freaking cold!

Yesterday and the day before have been the only two days in the year I had to use an overcoat over my suit.

I am more of a home game player than a casino player (chalk that up to lack of actual skill). In addition to Harrah's Cherokee, a new casino is being built in Kings Mountain (about 30 miles west of Charlotte). For better info on NC poker, I would refer you to @TheDeezer (who appears to be all knowing when it comes to such subjects).

For general quality of life, you would be hard pressed to find better than NC.

GO PANTHERS!

North Carolina seems nice. I’ve got family over in Winston Salem and Boone. I’d like to go there myself but unable at the moment.

I moved to North Carolina 4 years ago, and highly recommend the Charlotte area. Great climate year round- not nearly as hot and humid as the rest of the south, easy driving anywhere from PA to Florida, the main hub for American Airlines so plenty of (highly priced) flights anywhere, fairly light traffic for a major city, and fairly low taxes.

The lack of poker is very much a downer. You're right that it's basically Cherokee. I was very spoiled prior living in Flagstaff, AZ so Indian casinos galore and 3.5 hour drive to Vegas; anywhere was going to be a let down in that regard.

I've played in some fun home games, but nothing regular. With so many major banks headquartered here I have heard of some regular fairly high- staked games, but that's not my scene. We're wrapping up construction this month and hope to host cash and tourney nights regularly now. Picking up 20 gassers next week

West Virginia? Cheap property, low cost of living, several Casinos

North Carolina is nice. Love the Nags Head and Cape Hatteras areas, which were easy to get to when I grew up in Virginia Beach. I also have a few Army buddies who retired out of Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, and they ended up staying in the area. My sister used to live in Charlotte and I enjoyed visiting her before she moved.

@PTS definitely knows a thing a two about North Carolina.

Now, if casinos are a requirement to your retirement thought process and you're open to suggestions, there's nothing wrong with the greater Kansas City area. I lived a nomadic lifestyle in uniform and chose to stay when I hung up the BDUs because this area felt like home, even without the casino angle. That said, we have Harrah's KC, Argosy, Ameristar and Hollywood Casino in the metro area. St. Louis casinos are an easy straight drive down 1-70. PCF angle! From PCA to Terrible's to Mark Twain to Lady Luck to Isle Cape Girardeau to Isle of Capri KC, among others, Missouri is home for arguably some of the nicest casino chips sets around.

Hope they use GPI Paulson chips!
I even approached them through an acquaintance of mine, in the effort of convincing them to name the poker room the "Athenian Owl Club" and having me design (at no cost) new chips for them, to be produced by Paulson.
They just don't care about that stuff. The chips are going to be either ceramics or Abbiattis and they 're not interested in any inspirational crap like mine.

Apart from poker, what kind of living area are you looking for -- urban, suburban, country? What activities are important to you besides poker?

Obviously Florida is an option and has plenty of poker, but we’ve eliminated it for other reasons.
Would knowing those reasons help us in providing you useful advice?

Oh, and yes, you're right to stay away from Florida. Especially the Gulf coast. :cool

Jenn and I had wanted to live in NC but we love Florida too

Not sure if @Mr Tree still hosts home games, but the Atlanta area could be something to look at

Texas has some great poker from what I've heard as well

My wife and I have very different interests. My main hobbies are poker, some outdoor stuff like hiking and casual sports, and watching sports. She loves to travel, visit museums, and the arts. We don’t want to live in a big city, but want easy access to a city.

I’ve spent a lot of time in South Florida, mainly in the Palm Beach area. I still have some family in the area. Maybe Tampa is far enough away?

If you haven't ruled out Florida, why not Delray or Boynton Beach?

Tampa has 4 poker rooms close

There's also Jacksonville, north of Orlando and the Oxford and Ocala areas, plus Sarasota

Sounds like Miami area of no interest and I'm not familiar with poker elsewhere in FL
