Retire in North Carolina ... poker wasteland? (2 Viewers)

The wife and I are looking at the outer banks for our retirement, so...that makes two. My only concern is the crappy bourbon situation in NC.
Ah, but there is hope if you know where to look!

Florida is too hot and humid during the summer. You have to worry about hurricanes and severe storms there and in the Carolinas. Gators in Florida. Snakes and scorpions in the desert in Nevada or Arizona.
- You get used to it quickly, and your body adapts in about a year. We keep our house in FL 6+ degrees warmer than we did in VA. Everyone else we know from the north does so as well.

-West coast of FL is visited by a hurricane about once every 10-15 years. We know people who've lived here, on the water, for 24 years, and never once even put up storm shutters. (East coast is another matter entirely, which is why we didn't even consider it.)

- Gators? You hardly even notice them. They're entertainment, no threat at all, unless you do something incredibly stupid like dive into a swampy lake, or walk your snack-sized dog along the water's edge at dusk.

- Snakes? You live in NJ -- guess you've never hiked the Appalachian Trail in NW Jersey and seen the hundreds of Eastern Diamondback rattlers sunning on the rocks, or the water moccasins in the northern and central NJ lakes, or various threats in the Pine Barrens. :cool

Taxes through the roof in California.
You live in Jersey, right? Have you looked at your property tax bill lately? :cool

We looked all over the country about ten years ago. Every place has its drawbacks...

Good luck with the search!

You were in the Princeton area when you lived up here, right? I've seen you reference Conte's before in a couple of your posts. I'm up in Western Union county near the Watchung Reservation. No snakes that I've seen hiking up in that area, yet, but I've spotted a couple of bears :wow:

Definitely would opt for the western Gulf coast if Florida is in the cards. Longboat Key and Marco Island are a couple of my favorite vacation spots. Would look for something small in between, I think. Inland enough to not have to worry about storm surge but a short drive to the beach. Fair points on the gators, but when I went golfing a few times with my great uncle (may he RIP) near Bonita Springs, they were all over the place. I wouldn't want to cross some of those dinosaurs in a dark alley

New Jersey property taxes are ridiculous, yes. If I refinance my mortgage, the amount I put towards the mortgage will actually be less than the monthly breakdown of what my property taxes cost on my ranch home on a 1/2 acre lot. If I end up going the snowbird route, I'd definitely look to sell and downsize. Maybe even rent.

Lots can change in 30-35 years when I actually have to worry about it. It's a very distant thought in my mind but fun to muse about.

Fwiw, they're all over golf courses near the coast in the Carolinas too. A few miles inland from Hilton Head, my brother and I learned pretty quickly that if you're looking for your ball in the rough and you hear a hiss, back up 20 yards or so and take a drop.
:cool

Greece.
Possibly lazy and/or corrupt public clerks are a lot more accommodating to foreigners (the ages-old tradition of hospitality).
Crime rates are pretty low by any western nation's standards.
Excellent climate; earthquakes present though.
Impolite but un-hypocritical and genuinely kind people.
Not a place to earn any money, but the ideal place to spend money, IMHO.
I would retire here even if I were not Greek.
Im sold.

Can confirm. Moved from the frigid northeast to live in Tampa and we acclimated a lot more quickly than I expected

Haven't even seen a gator and been here 5-6 years now.

And we experienced one power outage due to hurricane. Much better than the blizzards up north

My biggest issue is the douchebags in lifted pickups with oversized tires and headlights brighter than the surface of the sun

At the risk of straying into politics, that's global warming for ya....
I was just eluding to the fact that cold, in the winter, cannot be avoided. Being in an area that is actually prepared for it for retirement is something that can be planned for.

So where do I go for retirement if I already live there

If poker is important to you, Virginia and North Carolina would be at the bottom of my list (see the What's Missing Here thread where @brains613 game got busted for seemingly no reason, then got his guns stolen by the cops - https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/whats-missing-here.47713/ ). If attending a KKK or Proud Boys rally or counter protesting one is important to you, then you've found your Mecca. What about Atlanta, or somewhere in Texas, Colorado, Florida, or Arizona? Or perhaps even somewhere like Puerto Rico or Costa Rica?

I was stationed in NC for 3 years at "beautiful" Camp Lejeune, so I can offer a little guidance. There are some very nice and affordable places on the coast where the weather is great most of the year and you can probably get more house for your $$$ than other more common retirement destinations. The problem of course is that you're probably ~7 hours away from the nearest casino. The drive to the casinos in the DMV area is actually faster/easier than driving across the state to Harrah's Cherokee. If you aren't set on being in a warm coastal area, I'd suggest Asheville. You'd be an hour drive from Harrah's Cherokee, there is a lot of interesting history/shopping for the wife, and you can partake in your outdoor hobbies. You're also a ~2 hour drive from places like Charlotte and Knoxville. I've been to Asheville a few times and its on my top 10 list of possible retirement destinations (note: I'm not even close to retirement age.)

I can say Ben and I adjusted VERY quickly to the temps. Both of us are always cold and the warm temps was almost like being at home away from home. We also discussed the future Florida option, especially since almost all of my family now lives in various parts of the state. The heat/humidity in summer was a concern. We loved marco island, alot bigger than we anticipated, and a whole lot of money on the island. I would note that while a regular day in marco averaged 85° we saw lower temps in anna maria by at least 15° every day. Parking is very limited on anna maria and a ton of traffic from vacationers, but that's about the only negatives we have to offer. Smaller keys would be a fantastic option, key west was entirely too busy for us, as well as Naples.

A good point to make with the Carolinas, you do still get winter temps and small winter storms occasionally, and they have no salt or snow preparation for roads what so ever.

The gators were awesome and didn't bother a soul, we were able to get very personal with one and he never batted an eye at us.

And Anthony, we call those guys the small penis trucks.... over compensating for other areas that are lacking lol

Lived in SE Michigan my whole life. We recently stepped out and bought a cottage just off a lake in N Central Michigan. I have fallen in love with it for a variety of reasons, and actually we are young as far as the average age of people I see in our subdivision, lots of retirees here year round I think.
God knows what the future holds but I think we’d like to keep the cottage in N Michigan, sell the house south of here and get a place in SW Florida. Like several above the wife and I want different things sometimes. But so far we agree that the snowbird plan seems appealing.

You said you prefer home games over casinos so, it's up to you to find people and make friends or start recruiting if you want to host. Maybe look up if there's a bunch of free roll leagues at restaurants in the area. Plenty of fish out there to recruit for home games.

Back to the international options! Cambodia has casinos that you can play cash games at and the dollar goes very far but, it's hot and humid. Vietnam has poker rooms where you can only play tournaments in no cash games that's "illegal" there. You can make friends with ex pats and start a cash game too I bet.

$14.00 - tourneys in Vietnam are fun they have higher stakes too but, in Saigon everyday they had a free roll with a $14.00 re-buy I had a blast. The currency rate means you're winning "millions or billions"

Most people go and stay for a few months and go back to US. There's ways around the 6 month Visa stays that are real easy.

then got his guns stolen by the cops -
Was it more than just the Mosin?

It has been confirmed (with evidence, not just speculation) that they were stolen by the cops?

I haven't kept up with that thread. Thanks for the update. I gotta go back and read up... I hope there are details about the cops getting arrested!
