Hi,

I've just started down this rabbit hole and am looking at getting a set of tournament chips for my home game. I've been looking around at chip designs, playing with Chipmatic Studio and made up my own inlays.

I'd welcome any comments/feedback/suggestions on the below designs

My eyes want the entire design to slide down a bit. The chip values can stay where they are and overlap the bottom portion without taking away from the photo. I'd bump up the contrast of the chip values while I was at it. Also, keep in mind that there is a bunch of type on those - less is more. Really like the $5000 and the lavender $500. Welcome to the never-ending rabbit hole.

Agreed, Chip values completely melt and the gradient makes it worse. Mark's is super squished.

I like the colors as long as there's enough contrast between the 1k and 5k, I've seen the colors wash out together and the squished spots may make it even worse.

Squished spots look good on the edges of the barrel, but how will it look if you align the spots? For the 1k, the thin orange spots fatten way out, not sure how that edge transition looks.

I agree with what others said about the inlays. Also keep in mind that there should be a bit of a "safe zone" near the edge of the label to account for imprecision in the printing/cutting process.

I really like the inset circles you've got in the designs though, especially on the 10k!

Generally I prefer alternating bright and dark base colors for each chip:

Green - Bright
Black - Dark
Purple - Bright
Yellow - Dark
Orange - Bright

I might ditch the 10K chip in favor of a 25K value one, I don't know that having a 5K and 10K in play makes a lot of sense in most structures.

I would also go with a darker blue, or a dark grey for that chip, rather than the tealish color (to keep the alternating bright/dark base colors)

I'd make the chip values stand out more on the inlays as well, they seem to blend/disappear into the design.

And for the edgespots, it seems like there's too much duplication in colors between them. Could see it potentially being an issue with yellow and orange in larger pots perhaps. Would try to have a little more variation in the edge spot color schemes to differentiate them further.

I agree with earlier comments. The denominations really should stand out as opposed to tying them in to the chip colors. I like most of the chip designs but I am not sure the tiny edge spots on the $25 fit with the regular depth edge spots on all the other chips. Good luck with the set!!!

If you're anything like me you'll be tweaking for a few weeks yet, but I think these look really good so far. This forum gives great advice, I agree with the comments about making the denoms stand out more, and don't be afraid to play around with the edge spots. The clone chip function is great so you can see your changes side by side and not lose your original.

Also agree you probably don't need a 5K chip and a 10K chip but that's more of a utilitarian comment than a design comment. Seems like 500 and 1000 are the only exception you ever see to the rule of not having one denom be twice that of another.

Thanks for all the valuable feedback. I've been refining/tweaking the design on your feedback and looking at so many other designs. It certainly is a rabbit hole.

Take 2 below including updated inlay design.

Too much yellow and the black chip is out of place, while it seems you’ve built the hundo as the primary I don’t think the flag works on a black background

Also too much detail on the label, should simplify it

I agree with this. You can barely see the type at top and bottom. Lose the cards and move the drink and chips and denomination up a little and make the type larger/bolder. I like the chips in the inlay of the chips though. That's novel.

And this is just a personal style thing, but I am having an internal battle in my head about the dots on the higher denomination chips. If you love them, then just ignore me. But they seem a little busy and unnecessary to me.

I say make it into a T-shirt. It is as cool as any number of similarly themed Tommy Bahama shirts.
Then simplify the design for the inlay.

Too much yellow in the middle of the lineup. Especially with a blurple/blue and yellow repeat. I always try to gap my colors and never have a color used 3 times in a row.

Too much detail on the inlay. Font looks too small - print actual size and do an arms length test.

Switch out the yellow on the 500 and 5000.

I like it a lot. I do agree that your font is too small and hard to read and needs to move down on the chip. I think the spot design on the yellow is a little too busy unless there is some significance to those colors like they reflect your city or state or country, but I am getting on age- so, just one person’s opinion. The green and gray chips are my favorite of the group.

This is a five star recommendation. It seems totally obvious to print it out actual size to check, but I didn't think of that...

I've increase the font. Do you reckon is it still too busy?

I'm biased cause I'm a bit of a minimalist. The cocktail image is all you need to highlight the play on words, but the image of chips on a chip is redundant.

The cocktail alone may be too detailed. A designer can help you if it is.

I like the design idea and only have a few minor quibbles with the lettering/numbering that are secondary. The main problem is that will be difficult to print and have look good on a ~1" label. Have you considered simplifying the design a bit, and maybe removing a stack of chips so that you can make the graphic bigger/more central? Two ideas below:

Since you are asking.....

I love the name "Mark's Old Fashioned Poker". There is too much going on with the inlay. I think you should remove the cards, and focus on the OF and the chips.

Edge spot's: I like all of them as a stand alone chip. I don't think the spots work very well from start to finish. The best part of the progression is from the 500 through the 10k chip (I don't love the white dots, but that is a preference thing). At a minimum I would redo the spots on the 100.

my only other nitpick is the shared yellow color between three chips. It is especially bad with the 1k and 5k. I am pretty sure this will cause you to have dirty stack issues.

Good luck. Take your time with this process. The journey of designing a custom set if fantastic!
