Here are a few Pic's of Removing H/S from chips and scraping smooth.

Left Chip (Aceatone-non), Middle Chip (Iso Alcohol 91%) and Argosy (Iso Alcohol 91%).

I soaked about 5 minutes removed H/S with Battery Tooth Brush and then scraped smooth the the XACTO Blade.

Wholly shit. Using above method I was able to accomplish in 20 minutes what took me 5 hours last night.
Amazing how the right tools make all the difference.

Thanks for posting/sharing.

Just because I'm a little OCD, is there a way to remove the lines such as in your starbust foil relabel project? Using like rubbing chalk or putty? I know its probably impossible, but that's one of the reasons why I never bother picking up hot stamped chips for a potential relabel project.

Not That I know of. Scraping it when aspplyingafter removing the H/S is usually enough.

If ya use 2 mil Vinyl Labels and apply softly it is hard to see. If ya rub the label hard when applying it will show some.

I really don't pay that attention and the labels are fine with me.

Just get a few and try it several ways.

By the way I am also pretty OCD with my chips.....

1st sentence screwed up. Should say: Scraping it after removing the H/S us usually enough.

Just discovered last night that If i let the chips soak for 25/30minutes then a Finger Nail Brush Just wipes off the H/S with little or no effort..I do 15 at a time in a recyangle baking dish.

Cleaned a Rack of $5 last night and a Rack of the $25 thisafternoon.

Hey guys, I've got some vintage ASM tri-clubs coming that are hot-stamped, but stamped with no rhyme or reason so I need to remove them. I've always heard they're a little more sensitive than most chips, any advice or best practices on where to start? I'm having labels made for them, so I'm guessing it's imperative to clean all the hot stamps off before adhering the labels? Sprry for the dumb questions, still a chip noobie. Any help is much appreciated

Do you have a pic of your chips?
I have a boatload of old Tri-clubs (triangle and club) mold that were used for a casino dealer school.....there is almost no "indentation" of hotstamping on the chip, but rather just the foil printed on the chip (pretty much like ink on paper), you cannot feel an indent of hotstamping on the chips. I put some thin 2 mil vinyl labels on some of them, and it works OK but there isn't much of a recess and therefore labels rub against each other in stacks, causing "spinners".
I'm considering milling some of mine to use as a travel set.
Would be interested to see what you have to work with.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I just wanted to share my experience with trying a similar method as described in the OP on an old ASM/CPC chip (unknown exact age but could possibly be up to 33 years old). Dipped a cotton swab into clean CVS brand 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and dabbed it onto the hot stamp on the chip. Let sit for maybe 2-3 min then began gently rubbing the chip/stamp with the same swab. Was great at removing the stamp, came off like nobody's business BUT the chip became discolored! The 1st picture is After I washed and rinsed it in warm water and a little bit of hand soap. The 2nd picture is the other side of the chip - basically what side #1 looked like before the alcohol...

I have not yet tried putting mineral oil on the discoloration, might try that later tonight or tomorrow...

Yeah, ASM/CPC are a wholly different construction than Paulsons, and react to chemicals and heat very differently as well.
Interested if oil brings some of the color back.

Put some US+ 100% pure mineral oil (bought from Amazon) on it with a cotton swab:

Let it sit for a minute or two and then rinsed it in warm water (no soap) and gently dried with bath towel:

lol btw, I put some GooGone on a different ASM/CPC chip of approximately the same age, same method/time frame as this green chip - the GooGone didn't do anything that I can see, didn't remove any of the stamp and didn't discolor the chip... (Why did I use IA and GG? They were the only two liquids within arm's reach of me sitting here at my desk... ha)

Is it possible that the lighter color is the true color and your cleaning is removing discolored grime? Just have to soak the whole chip now

I guess it's possible but it sure seems like the darker green is the natural color... And yes, I may have to soak it completely to get it even again... :D

So, in the interest of science, I soaked it in the same 91% IA for about 90 min - bottom line (TLDR), don't do that:

After 90 min (just picked 90 min randomly), the stamp came off with just the gentlest of cotton swab touches:

The 6 year old still living inside of me then proceeded to remove the chip from solution, rinse it in warm water, and continue the abrasion testing - the chip has softened up significantly:

The whole chip is about half as dark green as before but the original discoloration/blemish on the other side is still there:

Twisting the chip in my hands/fingers (I wasn't trying to break it, just feeling it - I think I could feel it flexing) caused a fleabite!

I think if I left it overnight and then came back tomorrow and stirred, I would end up with a green slurry... (I can put 1mm deep indentations into the edge of the chip with my thumbnail right now)

I plan to remove leftover hot stamps after a milling job on some Paulson solids. If I read this thread correctly, using 91% isopropyl alcohol will not cause damage to the chips?

Just want to make 100% sure

Interesting. These have always had a “styrene” feel to me, not the same “polypropylene” feel Paulsons have.
