Hello I am brand new to this world. I need recommendation for a poker set of 500 for $100-200. I don't really know anything. But after a quick search I did I am interested in:

Lucky horseshoe from discount poker shop: I like the simplicity and colors.
Outlaws: Cool design but idk how I feel about the small size.
Alibaba Tina epts: Really cool design.

Maybe these 3 are bad idk. Please help me with better suggestions.

Welcome to PCF! With that budget for 500 chips your options are pretty limited around here. Look around and get samples of the options you are looking at and go from there. Personally, I would be patient, save up some additional funds for your budget, and look for better chips.

With your budget it may be better to buy the chips you need in rolls instead of a pre-made set. If you are playing low stakes you won't need a ton of the high denom chips or any. If you do get some of these cheap-o starter chips just get the chips you'll need/use.

You can get these types of chips in rolls of 25 at a lot of poker supply sites and check out Apache Poker Chips. More than likely you will upgrade from this starter set pretty quickly.

At your budget you are looking at ABS slugged chips. They still work plenty well. I have Outlaws and they are fantastic. The Lucky Horseshoes are going to be the same weight and feel with a simpler mold. Casino Royale is also a good option for a slugged chip (The Poker Store and Apache Poker).

Hello and welcome to PCF! Where about in Iowa are you from? There are quite a few on Iowans on the forum. That's a tight budget to work with. My first upgrades were the MINTS by Clay Smith. My suggestion is to buy once, cry once. I upgraded to custom ceramics and am very happy. Obligatory pictures to follow.

Welcome to PCF lots of knowledgeable people here that will guide you in the right direction.

I would wait a bit and save some money. For much better quality just over your budget, br pro poker ceramics. Most non custom designs I think are .7 each at the 500pc mark. So you're looking at $350 before taxes and shipping. You will not be disappointed. Or wait for the Tina's group buy. You can get 500 for just over $200 after shipping and all. But you will be waiting for a few months (usually about 3 months). Good luck and happy hunting.

Here is a set that might fit your needs at your budget.
$165 for a set of Pharohs. You could just divide by 100 on the denominations to get $.25, $1.00, $5, $10, $50

Thank you for the reply. The first picture you sent looks beautiful. I am glad to be a part of a community with people from Iowa too. I will look into the mints and post any pictures of what I get!!!!!

Riverside Casino is relatively close to me in North Liberty (just north of Coralville / Iowa City). If you’re looking for an occasional game that’s not too far from you, let me know and we’ll make it happen.

I appreciate the advice. The main concern is that I would probably be traveling with these chips a lot so I want a case too. How do people usually transport thousands of chips around?

Plastic birdcages, Apache cases from harbor freight, or the slightly more expensive black set cases. The grey aluminum ones suck. The thicker black ones are good on a budget though.

You can get the cheap aluminum cases at target and just toss the chips. There only around $20

Hey there! I missed this when first posted. Welcome to PCF. I'm also a native Iowan. Grew up in Cedar Falls and get back there every now and then. I've played poker with all the Cedar Falls guys mentioned above.

If you are still looking for samples, when I was brand new here I was considering the Lucky Horseshoe chips, and I bought a few barrels to try them out. Honestly, I liked them pretty well for heavy, slugged chips. But eventually I bumped up my budget and bought china clays. Then Tinas. Then more china clays. Then more Tins. Then inexpensive vintage clay chips. Then worn and used Paulsons. Then better Paulsons. Then... I think you get the picture. :ROFLMAO:

If I had skipped those first 4-5 steps, my life would have been a lot easier, and my closets less full of stuff that I probably won't ever sell - LOL. So take your time, and give serious thought to whether you might want to upgrade chips, and raise your budget anytime in the near future. It would save you time and money to jump to the good stuff sooner. But in the time being, if you would like samples of the Lucky horseshoe chips, send me a DM and I'll get your address and ship you a handful. No charge, just my way of paying it forward from all the guys that did the same for me when I was new here. I can probably find a few other things to let you try out.
