Tried a version with old school colours instead of the Dayglos.

It’s my least favourite. Funny how we all have different tastes.
Well, in this case yours is the only one that matters. I do think that the 1/4 pie spot has a retro feel to it and therefore works better with the none-dg colors

I agree with you there. Also works better with my old school inlay. Going to use this set for circus games.
 
You 're on an excellent path.
Bear in mind retro colors are also definitely old school.
For somewhat more contrast, I might try:
-Retro Red instead of Red for the frac
-Imperial Blue instead of Blue for the $1
-Retro Lavender instead of Pink for the "show 'em"
I’ll give it a go tonight and see what they look like.
 
+1. the two of us should do a set together :)
definitely not opposed to the idea. Been wanting to dive into the custom set world. I just haven't decided on a design concept that I want to pursue. Too many choices haha
