So I am running out of space on my chip shelves and feeling like a hoarder.

I don’t usually sell any of my Paulson or BCC sets but I think it might be time to trim them up a bit.

So I need some advice.

I usually only host a single table game but always buy sets like I’m going to fill a three table tourney fest. I also seem to hoard like some of these chips are never ever coming back (which some aren’t since BCC seems forever locked down inside the GPI vaults).

For example, I probably have 1200 National Poker Series chips (actually more like 1300 now) but only ever use them for tournaments.

300 x 25s
300 x 100s
300 x 500s

Etc.

I have a gross amount of Cleveland Horseshoe chips 1300 plus another 500 fracs I’ve made from Lucky Derby’s and Hot Pink Paulson solids.

So yeah.

In a normal one table game, I don’t think I ever really use more than 300-350 chips.

1700+ In Plays... only 200 have ever seen the felt.

So what do I do?

I don’t want to be that guy that hangs on to chips just because they are rare. I want people to enjoy them besides me.

How many should I keep for a cash game and how many for a tournament?

I almost always play 5c/10c with close friends and family and 25c/25c with coworkers and others (No limit hold em)

And tourneys always start at T25 or $25 and generally have 5,000 chip starting stacks.

It’s time to admit I have a problem.

It’s time to give back to the community.

Or am I just crazy?

Also, why no pics ?? Why?? Good question!

That’s going to change when I get home.

This thread will be flooded with pics of my chippies :)

So.... sets I have:

Paulson National Poker Series (tourney only use)
Horseshoe Clevelands (cash game only use)
BCC InPlays (can cover both)
BCC Fan of Cards (can cover both)
BCC Aquasinos (tourney use - now have 900 of them with my latest purchase ... :( )
CPC Atlantic Club Solids (tourney use with 104 T5s added - up to T25,000 available)

PCF ... advisors engage!

Also, I still have 2400 something progen 80s and 1000 Milano’s I have to put up for sale ...

Help!

I am in the same boat. I hate to admit it as well, but I have become a hoarder and have too many sets and too many random chips that I will never use. At least it is very unlikely that I will use the majority of them in the near future. And I do agree, we treat it as if chips never come up for sale again, but clearly they do and even rare sets, grail sets, and highly desirable sets continue to come up for sale. Let's see what others say. I may put some of my sets up for sale too, but every time I think of which one should go first, I can't come up with one...the PNY set that is amongst Dave's top 5 wholly grail sets  :ROFLMAO:, The Pick Hobson's, The PCAs, Noir's, or the BWLK/ACB set that has taken me sooooo long to put together. Oh well, back to work for now :(

I think it will become more clear when I put all my chips (sans the Chinese ones) on my table together (if I can fit them all).

People that know me know I’m not here to make a profit or even break even. I like people to enjoy these chips as much as I do.

I am more than willing to sell for a loss.

The goal of this thread it to figure out how to let go and keep only what I will use plus some spares and not regret it too much :)

I think you need to look at each set and think about why you have it and if you'll ever use it, and how much you'd regret if you sold it.
Look at the cleveland horseshoes, for example. Why do you have them? Probably because they came up for sale last year at a good price. But do you love them? Do you need them? I'd guess your best reason for keeping them is they're your biggest set? Which may or may not be a good enough reason. How much would you regret it if you sold them? Probably not much - it sounds like you'll never need a set that big and they're always available for purchase, pretty much.
Look at the Aquasinos. Does it make sense to have 900 of those? I don't think so. They only go up to T1000, right? So even if you actually had a big enough tournament to use them all, it would be a pain in the ass without some bigger chips for coloring.
These are the kind of practical issues that could help. Or maybe you don't feel like being practical and you just want to keep your chips.

So put the Progen's and Milano's up for sale STAT. After that you may feel better and call it good to go.

If that is not the case, determine your purpose for collecting chips.

I have a lot of chips that haven't seen play in years, hopefully that will change in the relatively near future, but that doesn't change the fact that they have been sitting on my shelf. However, I don't really care that they haven't seen play, because I enjoy my collection. People collect for different reasons. I don't hold onto chips because they are rare or I think of them as an investment (I cringe whenever this is brought up), I hold onto chips because I really like the sets I have. My tastes change so I trade, buy or sell as needed, but I don't feel bad because I collect nice chips.

Then determine what you like your sets to look like.

Are they purely function chips? If so, you can get away with 365 chip sets (or whatever random number fits your liking). Personally, I have certain OCD requirements for my sets. For example, I don't have any sets that are multi-purpose. My sets are either tournament or cash sets. I prefer full racks, and if that is not possible, full barrels. All my sets are 1000+ chips which is 100% a form over function requirement. I like what I like, and again I don't feel bad about it.

Don't worry about being crazy, we all are a little bit. (y)

You are right. There is basically zero reason why I have the Horseshoe Cleveland’s other than to have been a part of the Chip Room sale that Jim had.

(And I’d do it again!) but for practical reasons .... no there is no reason to keep any of them!

I have really no use for them since they are covered by a bunch of other sets.

Other things that help with that is that they are Casino used and RHC which most people don’t like (including me).

These are great questions!!

First: agreed. Chinese chips gotta go

Second: I am the same way! I enjoy my collection too. Even though 89% haven’t seen play.

Third: thank you. This is the only place on the planet that makes me feel like I’m not nuts!

Here is my advice from one borderline hoarder to another. Do not sell them unless you have a "Real" good reason to. My reasons for the sale of chip sets or racks must meet one of the following requirements.

1. Someone you know really needs the set or rack and you really don't and they contact you first. (Do not contact them first!) - Sell
2. You need the money to fund another piece for your collection, i.e.. customs
3. You need the money because "Murphy" paid you a recent visit - This does not apply if you have a separate "Life" Emergency fund
4. You need the money for your bankroll - Do not let this happen because you may still regret the sale

Bottom Line - only sell if you truly have a good reason to sell that will outweigh the "Man, I wish I would have never sold those!"

Good Luck and keep chipping!

Sounds like we are leaning towards a sale of the Clevelands too.

I will have to get them all on the table and see how I feel when I see them all there.

It might change how I feel :)

I've had a hard time over the years parting with chips. But I came to the realization some time back that you have to "thin the herd" periodically or it will become a hoarder situation. My family agrees and tell me so all the time.

Will I always have more chips than I ever put into play, of course. But you have to occasionally make room for that next project/set that comes along.

I'But you have to occasionally make room for that next project/set that comes along.

Yes! and I have to find space for a set of custom chips, a WSOP set, those angry ducks, and probably a Paulson grail set which will inevitably come up for sale in 2018!:mad::mad:

Looking forward to the pics! Good luck with figuring out how to thin your stash and avoid regret!

Which ones would “hurt” the most to see go?

That’s probably where I’d start.

Custom with real shaped inlays FTW (y) I'm considering a re-order of my Broken Bells with shaped inlays.

Shaped inlay FTW... shaped inlays are awesome... I’m not biased, lol...

The InPlays.

I could let some go but that would hurt because those were the first chips I saw in 2005, 9 years before I considered the chipping hobby.

But even those I will set aside a cash set to part with.

It’s all happening tonight :)

I think shaped inlays would be a really cool idea!!! I hardly see them in CPC sets!

sell them all and go custom

I'm in this camp...but I'm not really into collecting chips. My first non drug store chips were 8gram diamonds quickly replaced by custom ASMs as soon as I found out about them. I ended up accumulating 1000 solid ASMs for travel tourney and cash as I felt my customs were getting over used (man to I wish I had those days back. Hard to even get any game now). That's all I had until I just got some Scrolls as a travel cash set to see if I like ceramics.

I joined this forum originally to learn about custom ceramics and possibly sell my solid ASMs (haven't had the guts to sell yet...but maybe very soon). I assumed this forum would be mostly about custom chips and had no idea chip collecting was so big. Of course I've grown to love the other topics discussed and being able to converse with people of the similar interests.

To me personally the lore of quality poker chips is foremost about a custom set where I can host games and bring a casino quality experience to it.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever spring for customs, but if I do, they will 100% have shaped inlays. But at a premium of 42-84 cents per chip, I can see why a lot of people stick with round inlays.

1st Set - The InPlays

Closer to 1,600 chips (not sure why I remembered more - maybe I misplaced a rack somewhere.)

175 x 25c
150 x 50c
300 x $1
150 x $2
345 x $5
210 x $25
226 x $100
100 x $500
50 x $1000
25 x $5000

Starting with this set was probably not a great idea because I almost got emotional over putting them on the table haha.

They are so fun to oil!! And every six months they need a good oiling.
