I'm going on a golfing stag do to Portugal flying from UK. Do you think there will be any issues in customs; taking poker chips on the plane with me in hand luggage?

They're old majestic star beaters, but they still have the casino name on them etc, so wondering if they would falsely believe they have cash value etc?

Any one got experience with this; traveling out of the country?

Thanks in advance.

My experience is mostly finest if but I have flown with chips internationally some.

Typically they only want to see them because of the X-ray. They show up as opaque tubes. I’ve never had anyone look at the faces, they just open the boxes or case and ruffle the barrels to make sure they aren’t one piece.

Do not under any circumstances put them in checked bags. They will pull them because of the X-ray again, and then unknown people in unknown places go through your stuff. And then you may not get them all.

But once they know they are poker chips there’s no issue.

Cheers for the heads up. I'll put them in carry on luggage then, for sure.

Do you think if they saw that they were from actual casinos there could be a problem?

Sounds like from what you said they will be fine, but don't wanna lose my chips xD

I don’t think they care once they find it’s not dangerous for the plane. That’s their job, and once your stuff is ok they’d rather forget it and move to the next person in the unending line.

Although you have fewer rights on the border than within, this is a customs issue and they have to document the value. Bad case is you're held for an hour or two to verify your story, worst case is they seize it and you have to go through bureaucracy and possible some legal hoops to get them back but they're never ever lost for ever. Neither route is probable.

I've brought lots of chips in checked in luggage from the US and been questioned once but I'm guessing checked both on departure and arrival. The chips had considerable value (1200 PNYs, 600 custom CPCs, etc) but the customs never asks the value (there's a $600 customs limit on new stuff) because they're only familiar with dice chips pricing.

If you call 4 days of golfing and drinking romantic… Absolutely!

It’s a stag do, not a honeymoon

Thanks for the tips everyone. Will prob just risk it.
