Hi all - have been lurking in the forum for months and have finally decided to get a thread started for opinions before I place my order for a custom 1000pcs ceramic chip set.

This cash set will be for my weekly home game - ranging from 1/1 - 2/5 (We mainly play 2/2 and occasionally 2/2/5 as the game progresses - starting buyins of 50bb - 150bb, capped at 250bb later). Players ranges from 6 to 8. I'm currently using an old 520pcs ascona chipset with a 200/200/50/50/20 breakdown for 1/5/20/50/100 denom. Total bank of $6,700.

I am looking a new breakdown for a smoother 'transition' during the game with minimal 'coloring of chips' from the dealer tray. I have came down to three breakdowns and would like some further opinions from the seasoned hosts in this forum! Here are some of my train of thoughts:

- I have been using 2 racks of 1s and noticed that there's too many 1s in play, resulting in a more limpers (esp. the newer players) and slowdown in calculating all-in raises..
- Do I really need the 100s? As far as my 2/5 goes, we only have 6 players comfortable playing at that stake now and its a friendly game with nobody cashing in for over 100bb.
- Do I need that many 25s or should I reduce it to just 2 racks and have the rest as ND which could be used for pot limit omaha (rarely played, once every few months) or SNGs using 5s, 25s and NDs.

Breakdown #1:
100 x $1
500 x $5
400 x $25
Total Bank: $12,600

Breakdown #2:

100 x $1
500 x $5
300 x $25
100 x $100
Total Bank: $20,100

Breakdown #3:

100 x $1
500 x $5
300 x $25
100 x ND (could be used as 0.25c or $100)
Total Bank: $10,100 + ND

Appreciate all comments on the matter - I believe there is no right or wrong breakdown and it definitely varies according to the table momentum and playing style. I just wanted to get it right and have a set that is versatile enough to accomodate.

Welcome to the forum.
For future-proofing purposes against a slight growth in either players or buy-ins, I 'd say
120x $1
480x $5
300x $25
100x $100

You don't mention any game below 1/1, so no need for fracs. Let alone that having the same people play with the same chip which may rotate in value x400 times isn't wise.

I would suggest not having the same chips for your tournament as you do for your cahs games. Have a different design for cash games, I just went through this same thing and I even had a $20 instead of 25 for the cash set, if you need a 25 in cash then have two different designs, something to set them apart

That is if you are also planning to use these for tournaments.

My first cutom set I had a non denom made and regretted it. It works in theory but when sitting at the table it will gnaw at you that one of the chips doesn't have a denom when the others do. At least it did me, besides the range you posted doesn't look like you need a frac if 1/1 is the lowest you play.

I'll wait for @BGinGA to do a breakdown, he seems the master at it, but I think a few less 100 and a few more 1's in your breakdown 2. maybe 80 100's and 120 1's.

I always like to future proof the set in case you get more players or you go up/down in stakes, especially with a custom ceramic set where color matching may be an issue on a future run.

for 1000 chips:

25c—100
$1–150
$5–500
$25-150
$100–100

it will cover everything from 25/50c up to a decent sized $2/5 game.

edit:

If there is a possibility of ever having a second table, even 2 short handed 6-7 player games, I would get 200 $1’s and only 100 $25’s.

Breakdown #2:
100 x $1
500 x $5
300 x $25
100 x $100
Total Bank: $20,100

I think this is the right answer for 1-1 to 2-5.

100 x ND (could be used as 0.25c or $100)

Don't do this. You will give yourself a heart attack the first time a quarter goes missing and you won't want to use these for hundreds after that, even if innocently lost and nothing nefarious happened.

If you are really thinking of going down to these stakes in a 1000 chip set I would think about this.

60 * 0.50
240 * 1
400 * 5
240 * 25
60 * 100

Bank $14,270.

You at least have 30-35 "workhorse chips" per player at more like 50 per player where fives the workhorse like 1-2 or 1-3. Also if you only want to be downward flexible to 0.50-0.50 you only have to dedicate 60 chips to fracs allowing you to have some extra ones for those stakes.

You probably don't need a full rack of 100s either, but you should probably have some for the bigger stakes you named

Good luck

I like the following 1000 chip cash breakdown to cover wide variety of stakes
100x 0.25
200x 1
400x 5
200x 25
100x 100
I'm on board with ^this^ -- it handles .25/.50 to 2/5 stakes and can be stretched to cover two tables, although the breakdown advice from @Rhodeman77 and @JustinInMN is also solid.

And don't use the set for SnG -- get a separate 300-400 chip tourney set, protecting the integrity of your cash chips (and game) while avoiding any possibility of financial risk. The extra $100-$200 spent up front is well worth it, avoiding potential risk for years.

However....

If you will never need quarters, or never spread two tables with your set, then I'd go with this:
100 x $1
400 x $5
200 x $25
for a bank of $7100 using just 700 cash chips (letting $100 bills play), or 160 x $25 and 40 x $100 ($10,100 bank) if you don't want to allow $100 bills to play. And if you think a $10k bank isn't enough, go with 100 x $25 and 100 x $100 ($14,600 bank).

And then get an additional 300-chip single-table T100-base tourney set that uses T25000 starting stacks (10/6/11/2):
100 x T100
60 x T500
110 x T1000
30 x T5000

Best overall use of your 1000-chip budget, imo.

Wow! Wasn't expecting that many replies within a day. Thanks everybody for their opinions.

Just wanted to point out - I will probably never be requiring any fracs/quarters with my smallest game being 1/1. Also, my main game 2/2 has a rule for raises and straddle to be in incremental of $5 thus we don't see much use of the 1s chip aside from blinds or dealer tipping.

Got to think this all over again during my next game and see if I ever need more than 100 1s and 400 5s.

Sorry to reopen this thread - after much considerations of the advices here.. I have decided to to proceed with the following breakdown with a total bank of $12200:

200 1s
400 5s
400 25s

I think it would spread nicely across games, 1/1 to 2/5.. I have decided to exclude getting the 100s (might add them as plaques if the player base grows) and get more 25s as they will see the felt more often. Moar chips right??

Thanks everyone!! Now I just need to get a custom artwork done and decide if I'm heading down the custom full art ceramic route or cpc route. Hope to get in touch with some of the designers on this forum to make this project into a reality!
