Was going to post this in the how did you get the idea for your chips, but realized I never posted my set officially on this site, so thanks @Trihonda for forcing my hand at this. I know I've posted some of the pictures before, but I also thought it would also be nice to contain them all in one thread as well. Here is the story behind my poker room.

The Initial Process

Around 2004 I began looking for chips to use for a table my buddy and I built. I didn't like the dice chips that we were using and wanted something more authentic. I looked around and found ASM's website at the time and began the design process. Eventually I had something mocked up to my major and hobby, the piano. ASM only had 312 spots at the time with very few colors. I picked out what I wanted, had a design finalized, and at the very last moment decided that I might not want that the rest of my life and canned the whole project. I wish I still had the design, but I no longer have that email address so everything is gone.

While designing what I wanted I was searching eBay and the internet for chip combinations used in casinos around the world. I noticed they had a lot more colors and spots than what ASM was going to let me use. I found a set on eBay that was I loved the colors on so I placed an order for some Grand Island Chips made by the Blue Chip Company (which I still own BTW).

This solution worked out great for a while, but I never could shake the custom bug. I just couldn't come up with a design that I wanted that I knew I would be happy with for a very long time. Fast forward to 2009 and I came up with Piston Broke with a picture of a car inlayed in the center that represented my car hobby that I was finally at the point that I could afford. I didn't want to use just any car. I wanted to use MY car so after much persuasion from a fellow car forum friend he sent me the logo for the Pontiac G8 that I just acquired. Between that and another visit to the ASM website with new color combinations, spot combos and that was the green light I needed.

I decided after 2 years of ownership that I love this car that I bought a second one. Same model, year, the only difference is the red one has a sunroof. At this time the blue is my fun weekend car, which I have modified and the red serves the bill as the DD.

From there J5 and I continued to work on what would look best and would work. One night while playing some online poker I got felted playing some HU LHE and was angry about it so I went to work on the chip design. I looked at the word Piston and LOL'd to myself as I realized I could also use Piss'd N Broke to mean angry and felted, just like I was feeling at the time. This way I could incorporate my love for cars and poker. Plus I like being non-traditional at the non-traditional spelling of piston made it more fun.

Table Design

Here is my early early mock up of the table design. Obviously pro work created by me...

Poker Chip Design

From there I turned the table cloth into a chip design. This was only mock up created prior to the design finalization. Much easier process when you know what you want.

Finalized inlays. Eventually I had to change the $100 chip design, but not the inlays as the chips themselves were supposed to be 44mm chips that were not able to be produced.

Add Ons and Extras (2,300 chips):

Obviously this set was not big enough and so I needed MOAR chips. I added on 1000x$1 chips, along with some more high denomination chips.

I also began creating some of the small extras to match the set including dealer buttons,

Along with some cards:

and Business Cards to hand out

Then after another year had passed, and the promises from ASM-Michael died about having a 44mm 1" A mold I relented and finally ordered my $100 chips. Although if the 44mm A mold comes back and allows for 1" inlays I WILL have oversized $100 chips!!! In the process I created a new design and this was the result of the set all together.

Most Recent Add On and Blackjack Table
Last year, my son was born and I wanted to add on some commemorative chips to add to the set that would remind me of him every time I played. I wanted to keep a lot the same so they blend well with the initial set, but add enough to them that the also stood out. I figured the spot combination was the best way to set them apart, while trying to keep most of the inlay the same.

Eventually those turned into the finalized product. Around the same time I also knew that I was hosting my brother's bachelor party and was doing a gaming theme for the evening. I knew that I would need some $500's for the table and added those into the mix as well. They are modeled after some of my favorite chips, the $1k "pumpkin" chip at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.

The set now stands with (2,750 chips):

300 x $0.05
400 x $0.25
1,200 x $1
500 x $5
200 x $20
100 x $100
50 x $500

I would love to get some nice pictures of the entire set together soon, but my brother who does photography has been busy as of late as he just got married. As soon as I can get him over here I will get new pictures posted. Here was his best man gift to me (picture quality sucks, but it was the best I can do...poker logo on cufflinks)!

My wife recently decided that my glassware needed an update so here is what she created (again sorry for crappy pic!):

Hope you enjoyed reading about the creation of my poker chips and setup!! I'll post more pictures or items I add here as I get them.

Thanks for following sharing. Chaos and I were wondering about the name

Awesome journey!!! Thanks for sharing! Stellar chips AND table! :)

Nice work. Big fan. If you 2700 chips, surely you most have a second table. How often do you see a lot of chips in play. And what's the max amount of chips you have seen in total of yours in play at one time

I can have a second table from time to time, but with attendance numbers that have dropped it has happened less often recently. I think the most I had in play was at HPI 2012 where we had 3 tables of cash games running so probably around 2k chips in play at the time.

This table & chips setup is one of my favorite custom sets, love the simple but sleek design. Nice to see the pics again :)

Wow, that's cool. I never made the connection between the car and "piston" - "piss'd" being British for "drunk," whenever I saw the name I just always pictured a drunk hobo shoving in his last $22 on a gutterball and then slinking away dejectedly.

I also didn't realize the set was so large - how do you afford all that on a teacher's salary? ;);)

The answer is obviously the US overpays its teachers...

You were an administrator for a while, right?
I did have a stretch as a principal. Oddly enough that was the only time I didn't buy chips (lol?). As of last week I got a new job, same building different gig, now teaching 3rd grade. This means I've now come full cycle from gen. ed. teacher to music teacher to principal back to music teacher and next year I'm back to gen. ed.

EPIC!

I had completely forgotten that your table preceded your chips.

Congrats on the new gig. Now that you're back in gen ed, is there another custom set in your future? ;)

Lol. Probably not for a while. [emoji20] The kid now takes up the poker chip budget.
