PCNY Cleaning (4 Viewers)

When I got the set some of the ones were a little dirty. I've gotten them into play four times. I would like to clean them. I don't want to risk damaging them.

My only experiencing cleaning chips were the Cleveland Horse Shoe set that I ran through @ChaosRock ultra sonic cleaner. I DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT WITH THE PCNY's.

Dawn detergent soap and warm water and clean with a tooth brush?

I've cleaned all of my chips by hand, including my Horseshoe Cleveland 8-spot snappers which have a similar sized inlay. They are a little easier to clean due to the RHC mold and large inlay leaving less clay for dirt to get stuck in.

Start by cleaning a very small sample in warm water and Dawn, any kind of brush should do but a toothbrush may take a little longer. I use a longer/wider scrub brush I bought at Dollar Tree. Make sure you're happy with the result on a few chips before you take the plunge into doing all of them.

You may be able to add OxyClean to get them a little brighter (I do this now) but I wouldn't suggest it unless you think it's absolutely needed since it sounds like you're being pretty careful with these. It also may "dry out" the chips a little more if you do this, but I've never had any issue with permanently damaging the chips with it. Again, start with a small amount before using any cleaning method just to make sure!

Ask Paulo to run 'em next time he fires it up. Buy him a nice bottle of something for his trouble.

The results you will get with manual cleaning will not be worth the effort expended. Chances are they will end up in the ultrasonic anyways.....

"IF" I use the ultra sonic cleaner. What other cleaners can be used with it other than the TSP cleaner. I really don't want to put them through that.

Fake TSP is your best bet. I would not use the real stuff (ultrasonic or not) on high end clays.

again, why not? i've cleaned hundreds of giant inlay chips in my ultrasonic + fake TSP with absolutely zero issues. i don't understand why you think this is a "more aggressive" cleaning method. when done properly it's safe, effective, and (most importantly - to me anyway) faster/easier than cleaning by hand.

I just don't want to. I'm afraid I'll hurt my babies. Maybe I'll give it a try and start out slowly, with a lower heat and less time in the cleaner and see what happens.

I'm not saying I'm being rationale by not wanting to. It took me a long time to get a set of these and I want to make sure they receive the proper amount of tender love and care.

They are the same clay as the other Paulson chips. If they mean that much, don't play with them anymore.

I've cleaned thousands with oxy and cascade dish soap packets mixed together. Warm water clean, cold water rinse. Dry, oil if needed, and dry.

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound like an ass. The bottom section of my post offered a solution. I've cleaned nasty empress chips, oak trees, and every other Paulson chip that way. Doesn't take that long. Dump a rack into the mix for 5-10 min, then use a toothbrush. If they are very dirty, use a mr clean magic eraser. Those are abrasive, so only a light scrub. Clean a few at a time, rinse, and let dry. If the color looks washed out, add a little oil. Good as new.

I'm guessing since these are RHC chips, they are more prone to flea bites at the top of the hats.....is that one of your main concerns? Thinking maybe the US vibrating them together will cause damage?

I have never cleaned chips ultrasonically so Is this a valid concern for mint RHC chips?

Nope.

I've cleaned thousands of mint or near mint RHC Paulson chips in the ultrasonic and never had an issue with damage or fading. I'd vote Fake TSP and Ultrasonic at 43c for 45 seconds to a minute if they aren't super dirty.

I think they are synonymous.

However people calling Horseshoes "HS" tilt me, if they feel the need to shorten it they could at least call them Shoes

I cleaned around 250 double down $1 chips with oxy dawn and an electric toothbrush. While they certainly came out much better than they went in, I have to say they don't look nearly as good as the many white chips I have seen around here cleaned ultrasonically. White Paulson chips tend to get a tan stained look to them, and that has never totally left my double downs. I believe I could see that to a lesser extent in your white PNY chips Bill. Ultrasonic may be the way to go for you.

I very recently acquired some old Reno hot stamp Paulsons. The chips are probably 30-40 years old and although dirty, the hot stamps are still in great shape. What would be the best method to clean them? I'm skeptical about tossing them into the ultrasonic out of fear that it will affect the nice gold stamping on the chips. Any feedback from someone with experience would be much appreciated!(y) :thumbsup:

At one point a few years ago, a version of the forum software limited the search function to a minimum of 4 characters, making it impossible to search for a lot of the 3 character chip acronyms (PNY, PCA, etc.) That's when people started referring to them by PCNY, so you'd be able to find the thread with the search function. There's a thread about it somewhere, may have been deleted when the issue was corrected with an updated software patch/version.

Now that it's fixed, the correct term should be used again (PNY)

I've wondered the same thing, to me they will always be PNY's, and I think that's the proper term
