Location
Temporarily, NoVA
My time in the Bay is coming to an end in 3 months-ish. I'm relocating to NoVa for a year. Wondering if any locals know where I should be looking for living situation. Currently looking around Clarendon/Rosslyn/Ballston areas. My office is in Mclean, and I plan to take the metro there (hoping it's reliable enough). I'll have a car, but I value public transit + walkability if possible.

Also, any NoVa chippers I should be aware of for home games? :) I play any game, NLH, PLO, mixed, and stakes from 0.05/0.10 to 1/3, not picky at all!

How old are you? are you single? Do you want to live near a bunch of bars/restaurants, etc, or are you looking for a quieter experience. Lots of options around these parts.

Metro is reliable, but you want to be on the same line so you don’t have to transfer if you can avoid it.

Maybe some actual NoVa chippers will chime in, but I’d want to live close to the silver line (which the McLean station is on, it seems).

If you’re young & single, maybe consider living in DC instead of the burbs. Not sure if that will complicate the commute though.

We can help you find a game once you’re settled, and there are at least 3 casinos within a 90-minute drive from McLean.

I'll be 25 once I move, and yes single, so access to bars is nice. I read around that some areas of Ballston/Clarendon is more college-age people. Looking for more mid-20s to early 30s people.

Clarendon has the best nightlife, and is very close to McLean. Not walkable, but a very short drive. Most parts of Arlington are cool and accessible, and are right near DC. Fairfax is also a lot of fun. Vienna is a little quieter, but still has great restaurants and is right on the metro.

I was considering living in DC... and yea, I'm mostly looking at apartments within a 10 minute walk to the silver line, since that takes me directly to my office. I wasn't aware silver line ran into DC if it does. I don't mind a long commute if it means I'm just sitting on a train lol, can just read a book or kill time on PCF.

Any of these would be fun places to live for a young, single professional.

You say that now, but you will regret it if you’re too far off the silver line. I’m not too familiar with the silver line (on the other side of the beltway), but did work in DC for a bit and long metro commutes are a huge PITA.

I’d go with @kirchhausen ’s recommendations, but I don’t know if I’d say Loudon is “hopping.” Also who uses the word hopping?

Arlington, Falls Church are good. A little further out, but One Loudoun is a fairly hopping area,

falls church looks like a cute little area. Also a fast commute by bus looks like. I'll add this area to my list. One Loudoun is a little too far for my taste and takes a transfer.

I didn't realize silver line went into DC! I'm gonna heavily consider living in DC now. Do you know if DC -> Mclean is opposite commute? Hope I'm able to get a seat on the metro both ways.

Warning all locals. @quintooo playing 5c/10c will be equivalent to the average 1/3+ hahaha. I support it though :p

Loudoun in general is a family oriented big bix suburb. But One Loudoun specifically is almost all young professionals, mostly single and very few families. Plus they have a world of beer. Literally puts the hops in hopping imo. Ok I'm old fine Stu

Yeah it would be an opposite commute

I used to live in Crystal City and loved it. I had everything nearby within walking distance, including bars and restaurants. Metro was right there, or you could walk a few blocks to the Pentagon City station. not sure if that Mall is still good or not. If you have a car, driving 5 minutes into Arlington / Alexandria provides much more bars and restaurants. You get your mix of young and old in that area, but it's still cool. There are some old school VERY spacious apartments in that area as well, and IIRC, it was pretty affordable.

Stafford, VA is where it's at if you're looking for home games 3-5 days out of the week! Gave you a little taste of what our games are like at Suits Matter ;)

But in all seriousness, I would live close to DC as possible in your situation. Maybe even consider the VRE if you happen to look south of DC. I believe either VRE line can connect to the Silver line.

Good luck and reach out if you need anything!

will definitely hit up your game a couple times.

I'm looking into DC right now, but a little scared since some friends have told me that there are pockets of DC that are crime ridden. Not sure which areas to avoid

I'm almost positive South-East DC is one to avoid. I moved down here in 2018 and that was what I was told back then.

Living in DC is nice if you can afford it and want to be in the city. But a lot of us live in the suburbs surrounding DC because its a lot cheaper, plenty of things to do, and the metro reaches most places. It all depends on the kind of community and environment you want.

I’ve lived in a number of neighborhoods around the DC metro area since I moved out here 9 years ago.

In Nova - Clarendon ballston and courthouse are good.

DC - Downtown has a lot of action but the metro center and chinatown metro stops are crime pockets. I like to visit this area not live there.

With regard to SE, it’s true that you want to avoid a lot of it but Navy Yard is one of my favorite places.

DuPont, more specifically Adams Morgan is the textbook correct answer you’re looking for.

Separately, I host a 25¢/50¢ cash game every couple months at national harbor (right by mgm) and would love to add a new player.

Hmmm, from all my years of living and working in Old Town Alexandria, Crystal City, and McLean, faced with your options, I'd choose to live on the silver line near Foggy Bottom and GWU. Halfway between your work and the best of downtown, easy transport or walk to tons of bars, restos and music. For a guy your age, GWU should be a big plus.

If you live in DC, you’ll be joining the rush as you travel through DC, it will only clear up as you head across the Potomac. Check the time tables… it’s a really long trip.

In DC, the Navy Yard area has really boomed in the last few years. Lots of young folks- lots of bars, the place is crazy during ball games. But you’d need to transfer from the green/yellow line.

Eastern Market area is nice (lived on the Hill near there for 12 years), but a bit older- more families, although a lot of young female professionals with dogs. ;)

Farragut West/Foggy Bottom would be more college-age. You’re probably past that.

Clarendon & Ballston are happening spots for young professionals. Lots of options there. (I live nearby.)

Reston Town Center- I used to work there and know someone who lives there and loves it. Lots of bars and restaurants frequented by professionals after work- although I think they tend to age a bit older.

Note: 267 is a toll road if you drive.

Subscribe to the Washingtonian and check out their stuff online- best restaurants, best cheap eats, lots of great activities and insights to various neighborhoods. Great resource and one of the best city magazines.
