Hello all,

Brand new to PCF. Recreational player here looking to get a set of chips for a home cash game. Probably $.25/$.50

I know next to nothing about chips, but I'm looking to spend about $.20-.25 per chip and am getting drowned by the different options and everything that seem to be available. We are just getting this game up and running, so I don't need anything premium. I just want a nice set with denominations, that stacks and shuffles well and feels good in the hand. Nothing worse than chips that you cant easily shuffle.

It seems like from some reading of this forum I've done so far that it may be the consensus that China Clay or Ceramics are the way to go? I don't need anything custom, in fact I'd rather stick to something stock that we can order more of later if we need to and have them all match still.

Any inputs and/or links to discussions on this topic already (which I'm sure there are loads of) would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you'll find much at $.20 / chip other than really cheap ABS and Dice chips.

China clays and ceramics start around $.40 /chip I think which is about as low as I would go if you want something decent.

There are GB for Tina Ceramics with a wide range of designs. There is also Tropicana Plastic chips from the Chip Room sales which occasionally pop up in the classifieds for about $.30-$.40 / chip which I really like. Especially for the price. But they are popular in my rotation and sometimes preferred by my players over Paulson.

If you do care about feel, definitely order some samples of a couple different options to narrow down what you're looking for.

What are your thoughts on these type of chips? Says "clay material with metal inserts"? Is that just a marketing thing and these are just plastic or?

Well, you don't have messaging privileges yet, but, keep posting and you'll have them very soon. There's also the option of becoming a supporter, it's something like $25 a year, and it keeps the ads off your screen. That gets you instant privileges. Just posting that as an option as well. They're (the chips) not going anywhere.

Welcome to PCF! Technically all chips (to the best of my knowledge) are made out of plastic. Don’t let that fool you though, the quality and feel definitely shows up when you get into premium options. @CrazyEddie explained it much better than I could (link below):

“We call ceramics "ceramics" even though they're made out of plastic because the particular plastic they're made out of is very hard and very smooth (unless deliberately textured) and accordingly looks and feels somewhat like they're made out of ceramic. I'd be curious to know how and when that name first got used for those chips... Chipco made the first ones, I wonder if they were ever deliberately marketed using the term "ceramic" or if the customers (casinos, dealers, maybe even players) just started calling them that.

Clay chips aren't clay in the same sense that bricks and pottery are, and clay chips definitely aren't any sort of ceramic (clay like in bricks and pots is a type of ceramic). Clay chips are basically plastic, but the formula for the plastic includes some minerals, which contributes to the way they feel.”
