one explanation i heard (if i recall correctly) was the "snapping" sound it made when the dealer grabbed it out of the tray when paying out a blackjack.

You're welcome for the photo.

It's another name for a $2.50 chip.

I've always heard due to needing to "snap" a $5 chip in half in order to pay 3:2 bets. Example, $15 blackjack pays 3:2 for $22.50, so you need 4 $5 chips and one snapper.

Also, the game (black jack) is often referred to as "Snap" in casinos.
I believe $2.50 chips originally were used in BJ tables to make it easier to pay 3 to 2 without silver coins.

I found, at some point, that it's an old-school term for a blackjack, because when someone was dealt blackjack face-down, they would peek at it, and then lift up the cards and snap them down, face-up.

But I never heard them called that, dealing in AC, where the cards are dealt face-up and they never touch the cards.

Heard many theories about dealers snapping out a pink chip to pay a blackjack off, or the sound of a single pink chip snapping into the stack when preparing a payout stack...

No theory was ever super-strong to me, seeing as I never heard the term in the casino, at all.
