Excited to be a part of the forum... trying to figure out my future for chips on a limited budget. Needing lots of advice - going to have between 20-40 players monthly, wanting to start with a 5,000 chip stack... need to figure out denominations and chip quantities... Also trying to figure out my cash game needs - buy in range for a .25-.50 game and chip needs for around 10 players... Lots to consider. Excited to get started!

Welcome. Here's the standard advice:
  • Get samples (don't go buying 1000s of chips until you have a few in hand)
  • Ask for chip breakdowns (I thought I knew best but there are people here with infinitely more experience)
  • Don't get the same chips for cash and tourney (you don't want a tourney chip turning up in a cash game)
  • Don't ever get dice chips, especially for cash games (they are too common and asking for trouble)

Hello and welcome! Seems like you got quite a project going on. There is definitely a thread or two on chip count for tournaments and cash. My searching skills suck, or I would link them to you.
What kind of chips are you considering?

Welcome! Here is a thread on chip breakdowns for tourneys that may be of help:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/chip-amounts.31730/#post-582199

For my 0.25/0.50 cash set, this is what I have that is good for 8-10 players, maybe even stretch it out to 12.

Cash Set of 600 pcs:

$0.25 x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200
$25 x 80
$100 x 10

I also picked up a couple extra $500s just to have.

Chip Breakdown:

$40 buy-in: 8/18/4
$60 buy-in: 8/18/8
Additional amounts get more $5’s or $25’s

Hope this helps.
Mark

Do you set buy in minimums and maximums? Thanks for the help!

I really like the dunes from Apache, but I haven’t felt them yet... waiting for some samples. I have some horseshoes from discount poker and liken the colors and simplicity, but they are a bit heavy. Waiting for some NEXgen samples too... thinking a 10g chip over a 13 gram? Not sure yet...

Very helpful! Thanks so much for your break down. I was thinking I would need more $0.25's, but people are saying that it clutters the table. Have you ever used $0.50 chips?

I have some samples coming... Excited to check them out! NexGen Pro's and a few from Apache...

I did a lot of research on here and it was suggested that a rack of quarters was more than enough, and based on our last game, it sure was.
I've never used $0.50 chips before though.

I don't think using .25, .50, and 1 chips in the same game makes a lot of sense. Remember in no limit you have to frequently count stacks. The more denominations you have the more difficult it is.

So I would do either a .25-1-5 progression, or a .50 (very few)-1-5 progression.

And yes you determine the blinds and the stakes.

I think an average max buy in is 100x the big blind. 150-200x the big blind I would consider to be "deep stack" which is popular as well.

Search the forum for the stake you want and you will get breakdown advice.

For your tournament set, fiure out your first blind level to determine your "base chip" and you can find breakdown advice that way.

Welcome and best of luck.

^^^What he said.
A nice idea might be to have a Non-Deminated frac (fractional) chip to play either as .25 or .50

Hi and welcome,

For cash games, a goof set, for a full NL25 (.25 - .25) or NL50 (.25 - .5) would be
100 x .25
200 x 1
200 x 5
100 x 25 (or 80 x 25 + 20 x 100)

For tournament with starting stack of 5000 chips, you can have for each stack :
8 x 25
8 x 100
8 x 500
If you have between 30-40 players.

If you don't need rebuy, it means, if you have 40 players, that your tournament would end at the level where big blind is representing 5% of the total chips in play. --> 5000 x 40 x 5% = 10000. So at the level where blinds are 5000-1000 where only T1000 chips would be in play. You then need an additional 5 x 1000 per player.

Which would make the following breakdown (at the very minimum) :
25 x 320
100 x 320
500 x 320
1000 x 200

I'd advice you to create a dedicated thread in the following section to better discuss this :
