Hello from the Charlotte, NC region! I am a casual player who is always looking for a game. New to the collecting side of things, and from what I've see, there is a an abundance of information to learn. I'm in the right place for sure.

Looking to find the best set to get started with for an in home game. Looking around a 500 piece set of quality chips. Open to suggestions!

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Welcome to PCF. You have many chip options! What kind of budget do you have? The will help us get you in the right direction.

Can't break the bank by any means. $300 is probably the highest I'd be able to swing, $200 is more reasonable.

What kind of games do you play? Cash or tournaments?

and if cash, what stakes?

if tournaments, what size chip stack do you start with?

Welcome!

And also for $2-300 range for 500 chips, 'quality' is going to be quite difficult but then again quality to you would be different from quality to me.
I would try for some ceramics at that price range if you want to go custom. Check out some of the site sponsors who do up ceramic sets

Welcome aboard,
For that price range, you might consider the CPS chips

I will dabble in more expensive chips for the collecting side of it, these are just for a consistent, decent in-home game. I like the idea of customized, and I also like the CPS chips.

Welcome aboard. We've got a budget - that's a good start. Now we need to know the following:

Cash game or tournament?
Number of players?
Typical buy-in (for cash) or starting stacks (for tourney)?
Typical number of re-buys/add-ons?

Cash game, maybe a tournament if the interest is there.
6-10 to start. The more the merrier, but that's when we'll get into a tournament style and I'll invest more in the chips.
$20 buy-in. Maybe $50 for "higher" level games.
1 round of re-buys.

500 CPS chips will be less than $200, slightly more with custom labels. That's a very nice option.

I've been looking at those. Also looking at Milano's from Claysmith Gaming. Any thoughts on those?

All the strengths of the Milano's are taken to the next level with the CPS chips. I have samples of both, and I'd be surprised if anyone found a reason to prefer the Milano's, unless you really dislike the cross hatching on the CPS chips.

Fair enough. It sounds like CPS chips are the way to go. I'll start scoping out some prices. Any recommendations on where to go to get them?

If you're not in a hurry, Palm is doing a second group buy for $29/rack, $34 with swapped tournament labels. Unfortunately Joe hasn't posted about it here yet.

SAMPLES< SAMPLES< SAMPLES, I haven't seen anyone say that yet.... Oh, and welcome to PCF, open your Wallet and say good bye to your $$$$...

When you see the choices you have and you like a couple of them get samples, when they are in your hand it is so much easier to make a choice.. Also some of us sell our sets here at reasonable prices (for the nice casino chips, usually used but awesome) so always check the Classifieds.

Welcome, and have fun,
Great people on here...

Welcome to pcf... good advice here... including the wallet at the door :). I know your budget is limited but you may want to get some sample sets... some of the chip community have been nice enough to lend their chips to see what you like. Sample sets can add up in price.. on the other side you may decide to upgrade so beware haha. I am addicted to paulson's but ceramics may be your thing. The cps chips have a sweet design and are a china clay which are closer to paulson's than other composites that I have played with.

Another vote for the CPS chips. You're at a crossroads starting out. You have an opportunity to get amazing chips at GB pricing. The $.29/chip is a steal, considering these chips are worth more than that already. The care and time that went into designing these and matching colors was incredible.

You mentioned cash games: What are your stakes? With a $20 buyin, I'm guessing $.25/.50 blinds, or maybe $.10/.20? $.25/.50 seems to be the most standard for low stakes sets.

I'd suggest this:

200 $.25 chips
200 $1 chips
200 $5 chips

For your game (assuming $.25/.50), this allows plenty of chips for play, rebuys and expansion. Plus, it's all nice even amounts (OCD approved) and will fit nicely into a 600 chip birdcage or 600 chip aluminum case.

If you're looking to get into a tournament set or play different stakes, then my advice might be different.

For reference, I regularly play $.25/.50 games with 9-10 people. We have buyins that start around $40 and jump to $60 once the table avg hits $60. I don't cap rebuys (if someone busts and wants to put money on the table, who am I to stop them). We routinely have $1000-1500 on the table. When I started playing more seriously a couple years ago, I was playing the same blinds (with $20-40 buyins), but might only have had $200 on the table (tops). As you play more, your game might evolve. :) Best to plan on it anyway.

The set above would cover a game with a bank of $1250. Sounds like plenty for you (at the moment).

Wow...what a community! I'm extremely glad that I stumbled across this forum. The goal is to build to more serious games. I am going to check the classifieds, and see what I can find at a reasonable price.

The CPS chips at .29 are as good a deal as you will ever find. I'd be all over them for your budget

This. If you are not a patient person and you can find the denoms/quantities you want at $.29, you'd probably do well to buy it the set without worrying about samples. As much as I agree that sample sets are really someone's best first move, if you buy a set of 500 or 600 CPS chips at that price right now and don't like them, you'll be able to sell them with relative ease right now at that same price (there's still a number of people looking to buy them as evidenced by the possible 2nd group buy that PGI is investigating).

Welcome aboard. I know you will see and learn quite a bit about chips here.
