Alright... so I've started down the rabbit hole... Here has been my journey so far (Sorry if this is too long of a post).

Signed up for PokerGO because I got an itch to watch the Main Event. Binged watch all of those over the course of a couple of weeks. Got the itch to start playing poker more. Have one friend that host a poker game every now and then with 6 to 10 people. Last time we played was only 4 however. Of course this group is using dice chips. Most have never played at a casino (including me), but I'd say myself and the one friend that host is more into poker than all the others.

Decided I'd like to try to host some and would like to play monthly if possible with that group. I'm still working to have a good space to play at my house, but that's besides the point. Started down the chips rabbit hole and reading all sorts of helpful threads (not helpful to my wallet).

Ordered samples. First samples I ordered are the Majestics. I really liked the feel and the looks and used those to learn how to shuffle chips. Decided I needed to get a few more samples, so I went to Apache again and ordered a sample of Royals, Cinci Jack, Milano, Showdowns.

Right away, I didn't really like the Showdowns nor the Cincinatti Jacks (are these Jacks real Paulsons that everyone raves about? Maybe it's my inexperience). I really liked the Royals. The colors are amazing and I liked the oversized chips. These were my favorite so far, but decided I needed to test out ceramics and ordered a sample set of Tikis. Initially, I didn't really like them but the more I looked at them and played around with them in my hands they've grown on me.

So right now I'm torn between three, currently in order of what I think is my favorite to least favorite (Royals, Tikis, Majestics). I visited the Royal Pron thread and that may have been a mistake because there are certainly certain colors I'd absolutely want in the set if I got them.

I'm looking to create a tournament set. Originally I thought I'd go for a cash set, but we really play tournament style the most. We are pretty low stakes with $10 buy-in and unlimited re-buys. Usually will have one or two people buy in 2 or 3 times. Most of the people I play with have probably never used denominated chips, but I really want to try it out and I'm willing to buy chips to do so. Currently we buy in with $10 and you get 50 dice chips. So I feel like I'd need starting stacks to have at least 40 chips for my casual players to have plenty of chips in front of them. I haven't decided what we'd do in terms of starting stacks (1k, 5k, etc...).

Open to any comments or suggestions to sway me one way or the other. This will be one of my first sets and hope for it to last a while unless I get the itch to buy some more....

Unrelated non-chip info: Also I've got an order on the way for some card decks as well. The Poker Store had buy 3 get one free. (Bicycle Prestige - Poker/Standard, Desjgn Poker/Jumbo Victorian, Desjgn - Bridge/Blackjack Diamond, Copag - Bridge/Jumbo).

Welcome friend! Post was the perfect lenght!

Buy in doesn't really matter, what matters here is how long you want the tourney to last. That is adjusted by blind level durations and number of Big Blinds you start with.

Many here run T25 based 10k starting stacks. Typically 12/12/5/6 which is only 35 chips. My style is 16(25)/16(100)/6(500)/5 (1000) or 43 chips.

Please do not rope all paulsons into you opinions based off of those Jack's chips, they are very light weight and plastic feeling In my opinion. Some paulsons are leaded and can weigh as much as 11.5 grams whilst thechips you checked out are around 8 grams. Big difference here. But again we all like different chips.

If China Clay's like the Majestics are what you like then absolutely go for it! I prefer the 43mm larger Royals over the majestics myself but some don't like oversized chips.

If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM it's the mail symbol at the top of the page, or post here. Tons of people ready and willing to help you get your game going!

Enjoy your chipping Journey!

Ben

Clearly you haven't encountered Ben yet...

Great first post! And you did the right thing by getting samples. I can't blame you on the Royals; one of my first buys here and 17 sets later, I still have them. As far as the Cincy Jacks go, yes, those are a particular mold of Paulsons. Specifically the Reverse Hat & Cane mold (RHC) which is one of the least desire-able molds. But, it's really all that's available to purchase from The Chip Room sales these days...

Edit: Oh, I see Ben has approved the length of your post. You have been officially welcomed :)

I just got my samples in too, also a new chipper.. Here is what I've found with my samples:

Majestics(china clay)>Nile Club(ceramic)>Nevada Jack(ceramic)>Bold Class(ceramic)>Showdown(slugged)>Striped Suited V2 Clay(slugged)

Ceramics are interesting beasts. I definitely prefer them when I travel or when I play with my kids as I never have to worry about them breaking. They are also hard to beat in terms of customization. You can do some truly AMAZING full face artwork (DDLM from BrPro for example). Customization also leads to top-notch security as well; no need to worry about someone buying some $100 chips from The Chip Room and introducing them into your game. Not to mention they are the most affordable when it comes to custom chips.

... but for a serious home games, IMO, nothing beats true clays (Paulson, CPC, TRK, etc).

With that said, one of my favorite sets in my collection are my custom DDLM chips from BRPro poker. Oversized, 43mm, full-face beautiful artwork in a practically indestructible package.

Just take out a second mortgage, buy these, and run away from this place and be happy before the chipping bug gets you and before you know it, own twenty playable sets of poker chips and hundreds each of dealer buttons, cut cards, and plastic playing card decks.

Why not just splurge a little bit more and get these? If it was me, I would be upset that I cheaped out over a measly $7.5k ...

Your reply was less than half the length of the OP... sorry to hear you're not feeling well as it's obvious you're conserving energy. Get well soon! ;)

Yeah I really like the China Clay. I just ordered 25 $100 Tiki Kings. The sample set only includes 7 chips. Want to have some more to shuffle them and see if I really like them more than the Royals or not.

Welcome welcome!
Funnily of those 3 options you mentioned I’ve owned sets of all 3 haha…

I have to admit my opinions are the same as yours:
Easy 1st place - Royals (got a set still)
2nd - Tiki kings (got a set still)
3rd - Majestics (sold my set)

The thing that attracted me most to the royals was definitely the colours. Then after I received the sample set, the feel was amazing!

This is a good point. Do you have to worry about the Royals holding up? Right now we don't have a formal poker table. When at my friends we play one a wooden table with no mat or anything. I'm waiting on a dining room table for my house. Once it comes in I plan to try and build a good poker table top to go on it. But would playing on a hard surface sway you one way or the other?

Ceramics will beat the crap out of the hard surface and the hard surface will beat the crap out of any clay chip. If you don't care about the finish on your wood poker tables, I would go for ceramics.

I would never use any of my Paulson or CPC chips on a hard surface. One reason I don't have a wood rail either. The china clays I care less about since they are so cheap compared to the real clays, but if you value them, I personally wouldn't put them on anything hard. Paulsons have a reputation for getting flea bites very easily (small bits breaking off of the edge of the chip), but China Clays have a reputation for just breaking.

Good to know. I mean we've played with dice chips on that table, so I don't think he is too worried about the table getting some dings here and there. So that may lead me towards the Tiki's for now. Which I was kind of leaning that way, because I feel like I want to get a decent game established and order some Royal's at a later date with custom labels.

I think that will help me to get a feel for what colors I like and the denomination I'd truly need.

On tables I personally think you can't beat a Barrington for the price. Loois like currently sold out on eBay but usually can be found for sub $200

They fold in half and can still fit 10 players pretty decently. We love ours.

And yes I was down to $7 that night but cashed for $360! Lmao

Lots of options on neoprene toppers for the wooden table as well for much less.

I'll keep that table in mind. Unfortunately at my friends place we don't really have room for this. And at my place I'd rather spend the money on building my table top once my dining table gets here. I've always wanted to build a poker table for some reason, but never got around to doing it, so I plan on my first one being that topper for my dining table.

Love that Manchester United jersey

I think most china clays are plenty durable. I wouldn't make that the deciding factor. Just buy whichever you like better. Im a huge fan of my set of Royals so I'm biased.

Yeah that definitely makes sense. I'm alright with the colors of the Tiki's and probably wouldn't change denoms on them. That makes me lean towards those for a first set.

If I went with Royals, I think I'd really prefer to get custom labels and get the colors I want for each denom, but I feel like I need to play a little more and browse a little more before knowing exactly what I'd want that Royals set to be.

And now I've just gone and order some more sample sets... This time from CPC. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me and my wallet. :ROFLMAO:

Ordered some Rounders CSQ, Atlantic HHR, and Atlantic Hot Stamped Amold

Now you did it buddy. Once you get the feel of real clay and endless design possibilities you most likely won’t be satisfied with anything else. Just ask the rest of the broke members around here. Lol.

Can't go wrong with the stock sets from CPC. I love my Rounders CSQ set and if you are a fan of the movie it makes them even better.

CSQ is by far my favorite, you are in for a treat with those!

I agree on the customization side of CPCs, but also I don't feel like they produce anything similar to leaded THC Paulsons or leaded Scrown TRKs. I agree many get su kee into the CPC train and never come back, but I l
Personally prefer a rounded collection... not necessarily all one Manufacturer.

I have been obsessed with the denisty and feel of BCC Clay's as well. Ut recently changed my mind yet again on my favorite feeling poker chips to some old HHL Burt Co leaded chips

Not soft like Paulson or TRK, you can feel the dense old school clay in these. When people talk about "real clay chips" these will ruin you and make you question just how much clay is in the modern chip recipes. Lol they definitely don't "make em like they used to!"

Such a trully awesome hobby with so many totally unique options!

This is making me cringe so bad. Isn't peeking at your cards a huge pain in the butt? And chips on a hard surface - it's like nails on a chalkboard.
Some of us chip maniacs recently said we'd rather play with dice chips on a nice poker table than with paulsons on a kitchen table, and we weren't kidding. Get a pad or a few table cloths or blankets or beach towels or a damn carpet remnant.
