My primary set of chips gets used for Mahjong 2-4 times a week and again on the weekends. It will depend on what is going on that week. We have two tables (1 automatic and 1 regular) running during these times. The chips are in play between 4 and 8 players during this time. It was one of the major reasons for upgrading to a ceramic chip from BRPro. We play enough to justify the chip cost. At least that’s what I’ve told myself! My mother-in-law and my aunties are there during the week and everyone is there on the weekends. This has been the normal routine for several years now. If I had a third table, I suspect more people would show up as well. My mother-in-law does not live with me, but we play a lot of Mahjong together.

We've hosted ~25 games this year.

Using a set of Terribles, with Shuffletech shuffled Aristo's, on a Chanman table, while sitting on Alibaba chairs, and munching hotdogs cooked on an Olde Midway roller, and I've lost $360 YTD ... the ~125 hours spent with our friends are worth every nickel "invested".

Down to four sets - smallest number of sets in years. 8 events a year. You do the math.

We play at least once a week. I have spent more than I care to admit, certainly more than planned/expected when I joined PCF. I have zero regrets and while it’s true I have 9 full custom sets, as much fun as we have, I’d build another 90 and not care at all. Some of the guys may not care about chips, but I’m absolutely positive a significant number of the players who attend my games come at least in part to the reputation my game has for the nicest shit anyone has ever played with. Chips, tables, chairs, food, etc. I wanted the look and feel of a high roller private room and that’s what I’ve created. Entertainment cost money. The argument that players will have just as much fun with sluggos is on par with its just as much fun to see a concert or game from the nosebleeds vs front row with backstage passes. It absolutely is…as long as you’ve never done the VIP thing. Flying first class cost more than coach for a reason.

I have different ranges on this poll. I think golf is a good analogy. Never has a person I've talked to about why I buy high end chips, cards, etc. said they would play a round of golf with old, bad clubs or lousy golf balls, dime store golf spikes, and so on after using quality equipment. Poker with friends using dice chips and paper cards can be fun, but nicer gear elevates most hobbies and entertainment to another level.

I remember some discussion a long, long time ago about my relatively high-end chips. I changed the subject when somebody asked about chip prices. The next time I hosted, I felted stacks of those "silent" (paper) chips from around the 1950's that used to belong to my late father. The first player to approach the table pointed to the chips and asked, "Are we were really going to play with those?" Laughter ensued, after which I brought out one of the good sets.

Wow, I'm new to the game, but I didn't realize I'm so far from the big leagues that I don't even play in the beer leagues
I bought some chips for $30. Then a new "Monte Carlo poker club" set for $300 and I've hosted 15 games.
I'm bad at math, but those are real bush league numbers.

I use this math all the time when buying things like fishing gear or boats, but chips are different for me. I live in a small town. I get to use my sets about 5 times a year, when I travel to games my friends host in the city. I’m not even buying all these chips for now; they’re for twenty years from now, when the population of my town has increased enough that I can muster regular home games, and my kids are grown up and play. And I’m paranoid they will be too expensive or unavailable then. I’m sure I’ll thank myself later.

And it’s just an awesome hobby to explore and learn about, I love getting and selling chips and learning what I like along the way.
