Hello PCF!!

I'm from Omaha, NE and I am 22 years old. I was originally looking into nicer poker chips compared to my dice chips for STT home games with my friends. Suddenly out of nowhere I fell into this giant rabbit hole of the poker chip realm. After looking all over the forum I have learned I should wait it out and find a nice set that would be used for our home games. Unfortunately, I have caught the collection-bug and have started collecting my local casino chips to start off!

My buddies and I are planning a trip to Vegas around Memorial Day weekend and this will be my first time going there(they have all been there before). I'm super excited to go Casino hopping and collect as many nice $1 chips as I can get my hands on.

If anyone has any advice, tricks or tips you guys have that you wish you knew when starting out collecting chips or tell me your favorite spots in Vegas!

Thank you and looking forward to joining this community!

Enjoy your trip! Go with a plan or else you’ll obsess over chips and forget to have fun.

I plan on hitting up the flamingo! I hope I am lucky to find a spotted Birdy that hasn't been captured by @David O ;)
I came back with way more than I thought I would. Probably still some strays but hard to find them. If you want a tip on how to get them send me a pm. Good luck and if you do not get one I think I might know dobeone who would send you one. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome.

Another new member asked for vegas advice recently and here’s the currently active THREAD. No sense in me typing out the same advice twice... lots of good advice on Vegas poker and cheap good eateries.

Money comes, and goes, very fast in Vegas.

Decide your all-in budget in advance and give yourself a set amount for each day. Spend what you brought with abandon (gambling, partying, chipping, whatever), but when the money's gone, you're done until tomorrow.

Also, don't keep all your cash in one place, use the hotel safe, and don't use your credit cards if you plan to get hammered.

Early morning poker games are deep stacked and very soft (provided that you also weren't up all night drinking and gambling).

You will never see or do everything in Vegas, so focus on having fun and don't worry about missing anything.

Collecting chips will be a side mission, don't want them to get in the way of enjoying my first trip there.
Welcome
The first time I went to Vegas I fly over the strip with an helicopter. It's a view to remember.

Welcome to the forum! I think your first time to Vegas should be more about experiencing it and less about harvesting.
You should definitely try to get at least $1 chip from every casino you go into, that'll give you a great basis for colors, edge spots, labels and textures.

Have fun!!! But most importantly, be safe!!!

If you are serious about collecting, you must hit Spinettis. It is located between the Strip and Downtown. Not only do they have lots of chips, but you will find many other useful items for your game, including racks, chip tubes (for fast rebuys), cards, and more.
+1
The chip selection is pretty overwhelming...in the good way!

I’m a chip nut and been to Vegas many times. I keep meaning to hit spinnettis but have yet to get there

Same here! Every time I go I say this is the trip I make it to Spinettis. Still hasn’t happened sadly.

As others have said, there is so much to do and so little time. I like to walk Vegas as much as possible. I get up early, (or stay out very late playing poker) and walk the strip in the early morning. It is so different than at night. Then is a great time to harvest chips since everything is dead and you aren’t missing out on anything else going on.

Here are some of the live Vegas chips. Do some thinking/planning in advance for which chips you want to harvest. If you just want singles then that is easily done. If you plan to harvest full racks for your home game then you want to make a plan for which properties you want to hit. As a rule any casino with a poker room will be an easy target for harvesting since the cages are used to giving out racks of chips. The main cage of the casino is only for exchanging chips for cash so typically they hesitate to dole out full racks of chips to people.

Hello PCF!!

Welcome. Worth pointing out that a single-table-tournament set is a great way to start, because you really don't need a giant set to be playable. You can have a playable set of 300-400 chips depending on breakdown. And it's good that you have already figured out that you should wait for a set you really like. Don't settle.

As for Vegas, I'm not much of a harvester so I'll leave that advice to others. But for poker, you said you're considering a trip "around Memorial Day weekend," my one piece of advice (if you can) is to wait a weekend or two. Go the weekend of 5/31 or 6/7. And the sole reason for that is that the World Series of Poker starts 5/28. If you really enjoy poker, regardless of whether you like tournaments (and it sounds like you do, based on STT's with friends), there's no experience like being in Vegas during the WSOP. Stop by the Rio just to get a feel for what it's like. You don't have to play big events, although if you have the bankroll and schedule to fire a $500 rake-free bullet at the Big 50 tournament that's not a bad choice. The WSOP has Daily Deepstacks tournaments every day with buyins from $150 to $365. They also have "single-table satellites" at various buy-in amounts where you can win your way into bigger tournaments. Or you can jump into a $1/3 cash game (although there are much softer rooms in Vegas to play than the WSOP cash games). And even if you don't play much at the Rio, there are tournament series going on all over the Strip, with great value tournaments at Planet Hollywood, Aria, Wynn, etc.

Also, you're 22. And Vegas is Vegas. Do some poker and chip scouting or whatever, but for the love of God, DO SOME 22-YEAR OLD VEGAS STUFF. And don't post pictures.

Hello and welcome, enjoy Vegas, I know I do every time I go! You might want to look into a rumor I have heard. I am told that there sre things that happen outside of casinos. Personally I have a hard time believing the stories but have never been able to tear myself away from the fun inside the casino to verify it.

When I'm playing in Vegas and I spot a clean and newer looking $1 or $5 I'll slide it in my pocket. They're few and far between, but it's fun to hunt down the better condition chips. Some chips out there are just plain nasty! Good luck on your first Vegas trip!! I remember my first trip and the realization that money can go very very quickly, so plan some non gambling breaks to grab a drink or watch a game.
