New Desjgn deck has a strange residue? (1 Viewer)

Hello,

Long time KEM lover here. I've been exploring different decks to try out. I am in love with KEM, but wished I could get more from a design standpoint on the back which has led me to search. I've bought copags, which I did not care for as they seem inferior in quality compared to KEM. Anyway, I decided to buy a set of Desjgn Poker Size Jumbo Black Gold from The Poker Store (Awesome delivery time btw!!) but discovered something unusual. The decks were sealed in plastic, everything appears fine, however when I opened the deck there seems to be some type of chemical or possibly oil coated on the cards? I've never felt this before, I could literally feel it caked all of my fingers from just a few seconds of handling the cards until I washed my hands with soap and water. Has anyone experienced this with Desjgn cards? Not sure if this is normal or if I should contact Desjgn? Found it strange and decided not to touch them further until I inquire what this is that is coating my fingers from the deck.

Definitely check with @desjgn, this is not normal. I've owned a dozen setups in the past few years and played with a few more at meetups, and I've never seen this issue.

I've owned plenty of Desjgn setups and never seen anything like that but I've almost always bought direct from Jason or one of his resellers, don't see The Poker Store listed as one of his official resellers

Nope. I'd wager that thepokerstore is storing the cards improperly. I've bought tens of setups directly from Jason and have had zero issues.

Thanks all. It's strange, any idea's what it could be? I cant really "see it" but its like some sort of coating of some sort? I thought maybe it was deliberate for the texture of the cards or something, but the comments makes me think not. I will inquire further, thanks again!

I noticed something very similar. Poker size jumbo index cards. I opened and used the black deck with no issues. On Saturday, I decided to open the gold deck, and the cards felt like sandpaper. Strange that two decks from the same setup would feel so different.

That is interesting. Yes, the deck that I opened does have a rough sandy texture to it, I thought this was deliberate in what people were saying was a quality feel, but the residue left on fingers were odd. Did you have the same feeling left on your finger tips? I had someone else to handle the deck to make sure I wasn't crazy and they said the same thing that there is definitely something coating the fingers from handling the deck. I didnt open the other deck in the package as I tend to prefer to leave 1 deck sealed for awhile before using, but after reading your comments I'm interested and will try the other to see if its any different and will post back.

Update - Opened the other deck (gold) and it was pretty much the same. I will correct that I dont think it is like sandpaper texture, but I still get some sort of sleek, filmy oily feel... sorry, not quite sure how to describe the feel.

I think texture is normal for the Dal Negro Desjgns. They feel just a tad gritty. This is in contrast to Kems which are buttery smooth. I like them both, just different.

I definitely think that it is a storage issue with the vender, but this is the first incident that I am hearing of such an issue. All of my inventory is housed in a protected, temperature-monitored space. I would reach out to the vender with these issue details and they should send a replacement set (hopefully without the issues you experienced). I hope that it is an isolated incident and keep me informed as the response/resolution unfolds.

Thank you for the reply! I love what you are doing in trying to deliver high quality cards to the open market! I will reach out to the vendor and see their thoughts. They are a small business and I would hate to ask them to replace the decks if it would be a loss to them. I will follow up here, thanks all!

Is it possible to buy directly from you? If so, how would I do that? I am wanting to buy the same exact product and compare to make sure I am not mistaking a new deck feel before making it a burden on a small business vendor.

Awesome. Thanks! I heard back from the vendor and they said it is stored in a temp controlled room and that it is new stock, and they havent heard of this before. I decided to go ahead and order the same deck from you directly via Etsy to compare. Thanks again!

@Matrixmoney Great, that is good to know about their storage of inventory. The other possibility then is if when they were delivered, were they outside for an extended period of time before being picked up. Environmental factors definitely would play a role.

First of all, let me just say how AWESOME @desjgn cards are and how great they are to do business with. As you can see above my order was made on Wednesday and came in Today, just 2 days later... WOW! Next the graphics and feel of these cards are awesome, they def compete with KEM as my favorite and are light years ahead of copag in all areas, especially quality feel and card design. All the positive raves about Desjgn are ACCURATE.

Now there does seem to be a difference in what I was feeling with the set ordered from a third party vs what I received from Desjgn. Not only that, but one key thing I noticed was that Desjgn came with a cut card as the third party did not. Cut cards are of course not that expensive by any means, but just shows there are obvious differences in how the product is being handled with the customer in mind. I dont want to blame the third party vendor as it is entirely possible there were some environmental factors involved in that resulted in the issues with the decks ordered. Had I purchased from Amazon or Target or something, I would be busting down the door wanting my money back regardless of how the issues came up, but in this case I may just let it go and dispose of the cards.

Anyway, I want to say thank you to all for the comments and again huge thanks to Desjgn for the support and care in making quality cards. Its rare to find vendors these days who are looking to squeeze profits in making a cheaper product, so I applaud you for everything that you're doing. You are on my list for another order (hope you are coming out with some new back designs or something like that soon). Thanks again!

Are you referring to these? If so, yes and I posted about it with no responses a while back. I cleaned each one of them with a damp rag and dried them (I had received a Modiano deck years ago like this and a light cleaning fixed it). It seemed to work for a day or so but when I went back to them a week later the residue was there again. It feels like a resin.

I thought I got a bad batch so I bought another recently. Unfortunately the same thing. Both bought direct. I’m hesitant to bring this up because I absolutely love these cards and Desjgn. They are the official card of the “Old State Club” and have been for years! I own at least one setup of every design he has made offered in bridge size and all the others are perfect.

Just got an order of those red/black bridge size and had same residue issue, unfortunately. They feel completely different to the four color bridge Desjgns, which I quite like.

Have reached out to thepokerroom -- where I also bought the cards. Will see what they say...

Unfortunately, a set up of the bridge blackjack index red/black Desjgn that I purchased a while back also came with the same resin or grit like substance clearly noticeable after handling the one deck I opened(I don't remember now where I bought them from though). Interestingly enough, a slightly used set up I bought from another member seemed fine and had no residue. I figured it was just an oddity until I read a few other similar posts on here. I'll probabaly open the other deck and then clean them both if needed to see if that helps. They're great cards overall, so hopefully this was just a temp/environment issue as others have mentioned

I bought a set a month ago, broke them out, and the guys refused to play with them. The cards just wouldn't slide on the table.

I didn't notice a residue. I just came across this thread and decided to wash a couple of cards to see if it made a difference, and it did. I'll see if, as Old State said, cleaning is only a short term fix.

It's too bad because Desjgn is our preferred playing card.

I have 6 Desjgn setups. All are fantastic. They are thicker than other cards. I have not noticed any residue from any of my decks.

Actually, I've heard about this happening with the Desjgns and some other cards (I feel like I've seen this on Fournier too), and with some water and a soft paper towel or tissue, the residue comes right off.

My new decks don't have a residue, but the texture is almost like sandpaper. I noticed that some of the decks I bought used are much smoother. Because of this, the cards won't slide at all - neither on my Jack casino felt or one of the new toppers (which cards slide even better on).

That was my issue; however, today I washed 4 cards and they slid much better. I'll see how they do tomorrow.

It has a slight smell and the residue sticks onto my fingers. after a wash with soap and water, my hands feel normal again. so there is definitely something. not oil but some sort of manufacturing lubricant of sorts. washes off with soap way too well so has to be that.

How did the washing of the cards go?
I have the same residue issue on 4 decks I just bought from a third party vendor in Canada.

washing it made it significantly better.

Still doesnt have that "air cushion" type feel that some cards have, but the cards are passable now. not my first choice atm. honestly my copags are nicer, but too thin and wont last. i do like the faded spade but little bit too thick.

I had the same residue experience with my recent Desjgn cards purchase. After using them a bit, the residue and smell does go away.
